Not mentioned in this post but if anyone was thinking about using 4.4 for web exports, wait a little more. There's still a pretty bad issue with audio cackling that hasn't been fixed yet (though there's a PR submitted for it, so it might make it to beta 3).

Electron isn't here to compete with anyone. It's a free open source community effort filling a gap. If you want to defeat Electron, you will need to fill it too; and you will need to do a better job than Electron is doing today — at the things that allow us to deliver a good experience.

I think that's the big takeaway, people like hating Electron (like yours truly), but if you want Electron to stop being so common there needs to be an alternative that's as powerful and flexible. Nobody wants to make that. Electron works, it's stable, it's industry standard, it's not performant but it performs well enough, and you can't beat web browsers in having a massive ecosystem where everything just works.

Tauri tried to be the Electron killer but it became apparent that OS-specific web-views aren't something developers want to deal with, and IIRC they're also looking into embedding a browser runtime which will make it more or less Electron again...

I appreciate the rundown! I started getting used to Emmet now, it's certainly more friendly than it looks. I think this is what I was looking for.

The short-hand for CSS in Emmet is also pretty neat, but It'll take some time to get used to it. w75p m10 turns into width: 75%; margin:10px

I saw this in my repos and still don't understand why subissues exist. I feel like this overcomplicates things, a checklist inside of an issue has the same effect. If you're going to assign sub-issues to different people, shouldn't they be just separate issues?

Anyways you can click on your profile in the top right --> feature previews --> disable new issue experience to turn it off for now.

I can't wait for the new game tab. There's been at least a few times where I needed to go through something frame-by-frame to see what's going on.

I don't think so, it'll just remove the bad results and you'll have to click next page yourself. Technology has its limits.

I think both of them would have a way to filter domains if you're self-hosting. The blocklist uses simple regex so you can probably copy-paste the blocklist straight into your filters.

I also bought a PSTV when they were on clearance for less than 20 bucks, makes for a nice little gaming console for the bedroom or guest bathroom.

The... Guest bathroom???

I owned a PSP Go a few years ago, it's a great device. I loved how tiny it is, but the screen was a little too small for me, and it didn't handle emulation that well. Loved playing Lumines and Patapon on it, though!

I agree, it's about the perfect size for me. Just small enough to fit in my jacket pocket.

I honestly wish PC handhelds had a similar size, but they're all tablet-size. Someone had an image comparing the Vita with the Steam Deck and it puts into perspective how large handhelds have gotten.

These websites are really bad, I really don't understand why many of these websites that invite people to Linux fail to understand the user that would browse something like this. It straight up links to the GNU website to browse distros and software, which by the way, isn't loading as of writing this comment.

This entire website talks about ditching Windows without an obvious call to action. Windows is bad, yes, but giving people a list of every distro under the sun and saying "good luck" won't convince anyone to switch. Give obvious beginner recommendations. Tell people to install Linux Mint, and a beginner-friendly guide on HOW, and why Linux is good rather than just convincing everybody to stay on Windows 10.

this is actually a plot point in the graphic novel Eight Billion Genies, where people would make a wish by reading a really long contract for hours that covers all the possibilities and caveats. You'd enjoy it, OP.

Been working on this one for a while and I'm eager to share it. UFO 50 is a collection of 50 retro-style games, and I decided to write a blog post reviewing every single one. Enjoy!

The Original Rogue Legacy Source Code Now Available

Greetings @everyone!

It's been more than 10 years since we released a game that would alter the trajectory of our lives forever. That game, of course, was the original Rogue Legacy. In the span of a single night we went from struggling indie devs to building a solid, stable career making video games; a path that would carry on for more than a decade. Since then we've released two more titles and have reached millions of players worldwide, and it is a journey we hope to continue far into the future.

So, to give back to the community that has gifted us so much, and in the pursuit of sharing knowledge, today we are officially releasing the full source code to Rogue Legacy 1. This may only interest a select few people, but we hope by public sourcing the game that started it all for us, we can keep its spirit alive and help budding developers curious to know what it took for us to get started (and to see what you can get away with :p).

The full source is available at the GitHub link below:

https://github.com/flibitijibibo/RogueLegacy1/

A lifetime of gratitude goes out to Ethan Lee for setting up the public source code repository, and helping us since all the way back to the original Mac and Linux release of Rogue Legacy.

There's been surprisingly little fanfare for this but I guess most of the Godot community are hobbyists anyways.

Announcing Swift 6 (www.swift.org)
submitted 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago) by popcar2 to c/programming

The big thing about this release is it is a huge leap forward to making Swift a cross-platform language, and not something only built for Mac/iOS

Swift 6 unifies the implementation of Foundation across all platforms. The modern, portable Swift implementation provides consistency across platforms, it’s more robust, and it’s open source. macOS and iOS started using the Swift implementation of Foundation alongside Swift 5.9, and Swift 6 brings these improvements to Linux and Windows.

Swift is designed to support development and execution on all major operating systems, and platform consistency and expansion underpins Swift’s ability to reach new programming domains. Swift 6 brings major improvements to Linux and Windows across the board, including support for more Linux distributions and Windows architectures. Toolchains for all of the following platforms are available for download from Swift.org/install.
