The results from the 2023 c/formula1 poll are in

Responses

I've been blown away by the 129 responses we had to this poll. This community is growing rapidly and so we got much more feedback than I expected.

Thank you all for taking the time to have your say, it's really appreciated!

Moderators

I'd like to start by thanking everyone who volunteered to be a moderator.

I've added several moderators to the team, all of which should have received a DM from me confirming moderator status, and an invite to the Discord mod chat.

If you can see you are a mod, but didn't get the DM, please DM me. I know that at least one of you didn't get the message! Maybe Lemmy wasn't feeling well when I tried.

If you haven't been selected to be a moderator, it's entirely due to me not being able to find a post / comment made by you after a cursory search (if there's a better way to add a mod, do let me know!). If you're not currently a moderator and you'd still like to be, please feel free to let me know in here.

Results

I'm sure you're all excited to see how the polls went, so here we go!

Should c/formula1 allow posts with spoilers in the title?

Option Count
Yes 45
No 67
Unsure 17

This was a close one, with "No" winning out with just over 52% (rounded) of the votes. As Brits already know, 52% means Brexit, therefore we will not allow spoilers in post titles.

Please select the types of post you'd like to allow in c/formula1

Option Count
Live session discussion 121
Post-race discussion 127
Social media posts from teams 110
Image posts (photos / F1 art) 107
Meme posts 50
Posts relating to the F1 TV service 76
Posts relating to other motorsports (eg WEC, Indy Car, Formula E) 68
Posts linking to F1 news websites 114
Opinion / technical / statistics pieces by members of c/formula1 120
Other 6

It's clear that whilst there is a demand for all F1 content, memes are the least favourable. There are some formuladank communities already available, so we will not allow memes in here.

We shall link to formuladank in the sidebar, along with any other appropriate communities.

6. Should c/formula1 allow posts covering the following illegal services?

Option Count
Live race streams 48
Post-race streams 32
F1 Torrents 30
IPTV Services 24
Other 76

The general opinion was that we should not offer pirate services in this community. The "Other" option was frequently used to express this, as well as the follow-up question #7.

We shall not allow pirate services to be posted in this community. Clarification of what this constitutes will be included in the rules when they are posted.

There were several arguments against this, and I feel that most of us who want to find streams / downloads will be resourceful enough to do so anyway.

8. Should we by and large use the rules from r/formula1 for our community, where possible?

This was the most clear result, with a great majority of you wanting those rules, or something very similar. I'm working on updating the rules and aim to post them after the Canadian GP.

9. Is there anything else you'd like to add?

This was by and large a lovely set of messages showing support for the community. Thank you!

Conclusion

So there you have it! We shall revisit the rules again next year. Please do feel free to message me or any of the other mods, or post in the community if you think there should be a change made somewhere.

Thanks!

On a side note, I'll be posting the weekend thread for the whole Canadian GP tomorrow!

Thanks for your work!

Are there any mods from r/formula1 who are keen to join the mod team here? Is there anything we can do to highlight the existence of this community to r/formula1?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

There’s a discord with a lot of activity from r/formula1 members. https://discord.gg/formula1

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Given that r/formula1 is still private, there's not much to do there.

I've commented a couple of times over there about this community, but I'm not likely to go over there to create a promotional post.

r/formula1 didn't want anything to do with Lemmy previously, which is fine, they're going their own way with discord. I think discord is fine for smaller chats but 1k+ people on a live race is just going to be chaos and hopefully the threaded comments here will be more conversational.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago

Yeah discord is only good for a live chat, the point of reddit or lemmy etc is to get discussion going in multiple places. Live chat is just a mess

huh there was a survey? I somehow completely missed it. Looks good though, I look forward to shooting the shit with you guys this weekend

Yeah, it was pinned for a while, maybe 5 days?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Excellent write up.

On the spoilers. I see we have the option to create comments with spoils. I will do some testing to see.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

This is great. Thanks for taking the survey. I'm excited to see where this sub goes!

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Well that's weird. Especially copying the Reddit sub. Why not make a new community from scratch?

And Lemmy.ml people already said they're fine with pirated content here, so what's the harm... I don't mean advertising outright, there should be a separate comm for that, but I think it's fine to respond to someone who asks for a link in a comment or such.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Agreed, kinda weird decisions about copying Reddit rules and pirated content. It's not like this community is being run by FOM, and where's the harm anyway? People will be sharing links in private messages anyway, so might as well allow that in public and regulate it.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm someone who voted against it, and will explain why. But in question 7 I did say I was open to one mega thread for it.

The reason I'm against it is because I don't have any personal need for it (F1TV subscriber). During the race weekends I like to browse the subreddit (this community now) for updates on many items. I'd like to not have any posts about streams in that feed, but just read the latest / opinions of the sport.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

That's a valid point. Mega thread for streams seems like a good idea, this would make sharing and finding them easier if they are kept in one place. Considering people would probably not only share streams in English but in other languages as well it would also keep cluttering the community to a minimum. I did not consider that before, and I hope people managing this community seriously consider this.

Heya,

For me there are a few reasons to go down this route:

  • Disallowing piracy enhances the legitimacy of this community. I'd like to establish relationships with F1, teams, and other persons involved in the sport. This would be much harder to do if the first thing they see here is a link to stream or download a race.

  • Piracy is harder to moderate. We're not going to be checking every link to ensure there are no viruses and that the content is what it claims to be. We don't want our users having issues from content they find here.

  • The majority of the community didn't want it here, for varying reasons.

  • You can 100% set up c/formula1withblackjackandhookers if you wanted (though I'd stick with the names of the respective subreddits to be easier found!) and have a place dedicated to F1 / motorsport piracy.

Looking forward to seeing this place grow

Just signed up this morning to Lemmy (it's slightly irritating that it always autocorrects to Lenny). Thanks for (re)creating this community!

I'd say the most important thing just now is getting as many people on board as possible. The way the Reddit protests are going, there's going to be some major issues soon and potentially some wanting to move elsewhere come the end of the month.

This seems like a decent place to try and build.

The worst thing that could happen is some people moving to discord, some move to here, some to another lemmy community, some staying on reddit etc.

Beautiful, exactly what I wanted from this community. While I'm enjoying the new start a lot of communities have had, r/formula1 has always been a fantastic subreddit even as it got bigger and bigger, thanks to the rules and moderation team. Glad to see an attempt to replicate it here, hopefully the discussion is just as strong.
