Emissary is a revolutionary next-gen Web platform that lets you tinker with every little bit of it. It works with the Fediverse, is built on IndieWeb principles, and looks incredible.

PubKit is a spinoff project from Pixelfed, and is used by the project's lead developer to actually develop Pixelfed. It has some pretty great ideas about mocking up entities and data, testing data streams, and working with different server implementations to see where pieces might differ.

If you're a developer working on a fediverse app or service and want to get it right – or just don't want to be the center of the next firestorm – here are a few suggestions.

It not only have problems with CSEM (the real-life stuff), but there are now bots spamming it and Twitter made reporting it a chore.

"Please provide more context", WTF it's literally just CSEM plus a link I won't click even if my life depends on it!

I'm quite sad since a lot of the creators I'm following are still only there, or on the boneless fediverse app BlueSky (which is worse in some ways), and I still need to keep it around just to protect my user handle there and to look things up from time to time.

Once I'm at home from work, I'm locking my account, and put up a farewell message to whoever might miss me.

I'm not saying that the fediverse is perfect, far from it (especially certain segments of Lemmy), but it's a way better experience than whatever Xitter (or Reddit for that matter) tries to be. I even have more reach, especially since the whole paid blue checkmark thing.

Meta said on Monday that it plans to “temporarily” shutter Threads in Turkey from April 29, in response to an interim injunction imposed by the Turkish competition authority last month over the way Meta shares data between Threads and Instagram.

The Turkish Competition Authority (TCA), known as Rekabet Kurumu, noted on March 18 that its investigations found that Meta was abusing its dominant market position by combining the data of users who create Threads profiles with that of their Instagram account — without giving users the choice to opt-in.

Over the past year or so I’ve been playing with the idea of a decentralised social platform based on your location. By putting physical location at the centre of the experience, such a platform could be used to bring communities together and provide a source of local information when travelling. Please let me know what you guys think.

Hello! Im Trying out peertube and have some unanswered questions. Iv been having some troubles figuring out how to use that platform. One problem is that it takes much time to find an instance with open registration. But its Ok, not a big problem.

So I registered, but what is happening? Where is content from other instances? I cannot simply find my fav channels from other instances just by typing the name. But if you try to search with @[email protected] it surprisingly works. Well, may be my channel should be visible from other instances, right? Looks like not either.

But its not completely broken, some channels visible from X instance on Z instance, but on the other side Z channels on X instance undiscoverable.

Each instance also has different tranding and discover pages, which looks weird to me.

In other words, how do we know as content creators, if our channels can be discovered from other instances? And its not just about using Sepia Search (that only works if user knows what they are searching), but also displaying content on different instances in "Tranding", "Discover" and "Recently added" pages.

Another concern is about privacy.

We all know about P2P, and that when you connect to peers you reveal your IP address. How peertube protects users from ~~stealing~~ leaking their IP addresses?

Thank you! :3

Hi!

For the past ~2 months I’ve been working on my own implementation of an ActivityPub server, as a personal challenge. It’s finally come to the point where I could set up a public federation testing instance (https://testpilot.shinolabs.com/) which surprisingly just works.

While it doesn’t have a frontend yet (due to my severely lacking skills), Toki supports the Mastodon API set, allowing most fedi clients to connect to it.

It’s been a wild journey going from barely understanding ActivityPub and ActivityStreams to having something that actually federates and allows me to talk with the wider Fediverse network. It’s been something I wanted to do since at least 2018, but only now really took the steps to properly attempt it.

I’d love to hear any suggestions or potential bugs people can find (contributions are also welcome ^^)!

Cheers :)

If the spirit of the fediverse is to spread everything across small instances, then i think it would be really important to make communities, especially niche communities, easier to discover across instances. Since it is not planned to crawl federated instances community catalog, i think instance admins, or maybe even the lemmy software itself, should point more obvious to services like https://lemmyverse.net/communities to search for communities instead of the lemmy (or mbin, piefed) internal search. It's been a while since i have seen someone talk about these community crawler services.

Instances that don't federate a remote community won't even list this community in the user profile of a moderator.

@[email protected]

These are all spam or troll accounts that keep spinning up after they get banned (or at least the ones my instance knows about). You ban one, they just spin up another because there is only a medium strength captcha preventing it. Even requiring email verification would be a step in the right direction and slow this down somewhat if you're completely opposed to having applications in place.

Some instances have already defederated from yours, and my patience is wearing thin as well. I'm not going to tell you how to run your instance, but I will point out the problems yours is causing and hope that you will choose to address them.

Sincerely, your fedihood neighbor.

Edit: Updated to remove a few legitimate users / false positives that were banned for more normal reasons.

Edit 2: I, and at least one or two other admins, have tried reaching out to the admin there, and AFAIK, none of us have received any replies. So I figured at this point a full page ad, so to speak, was warranted and might get their attention.

Admin team of LGBTQIA.Social Mastodon instance received abuse email from Russian censorship agency, where they demanded to remove an account. The account in question represented a small group that ran a collaborative blog for LGBTQIA youth and adults in Russia.

Shortly after refusal to comply with agency's demands, the instance was blocked and is now unreachable from Russia.

All previous blocks of Fediverse instaces in Russia were related to hosting CSAM.

Social bookmarking is a novel use case for ActivityPub and I’m super excited about it. I heckin’ love links and lists! I wanna use them for everything.

Things like Bookwyrm are cool, but it’s not what I want. I just wanna link the thing. Books, films, podcasts, articles, songs.., they’re all just resource recommendations which can be encapsulated by links.

I just got banned from [email protected], which seems to be the biggest Linux community out there.

For context, it was about the recent Vaxerski incident, where I shared my personal opinion about the whole gender stuff. I wasn't even trying to be hurtful against anyone, just shared my 2 cents in an already ongoing conversation.

Sure, ine might not agree with my opinion, and I don't agree with others, and this is totally normal. But at least we should be able to have sane and respectful conversations where no one is insulting each other, or anyone else... without having a mod intervening into the conversation

So to all the mods out there: Your personal opinion does not give you the right to delete comments and block users, just because their opinions don't align with yours!

Is there any interest in this idea?

Automatically have a little copyright icon added to all your posts with your choice of copyright license.

I've seen someone around here manually adding a copyright statement to most of their posts and thought I'd see if others would be into it. It'd be unobtrusive and incorporated into the UI, rather than a piece of text in the post.

Your thoughts?

Lemmy users, you can now vote for your favourite song in Lemmyvision's song contest, an Eurovision-like song contest, in which various instances submitted a song of their choice!

My sincere thanks everyone for their submissions, I have created a form where you can rank your favourite songs, it's available here :

➡️ Lemmyvision Voting Form - https://tally.so/r/nWNgKQ ⬅️

I'll leave the form open for a week and then collect the results!

Make sure to check each submitted song thanks to the playlists @[email protected] has created:

Full list of songs:

  • 🇦🇺 Royel Otis - Heading For The Door (aussie.zone / Australia)
  • 🇧🇪 Puggy - Lost Child ([email protected] / Belgium)
  • 🇨🇦 Lu Kala - Hotter Now (lemmy.ca / Canada)
  • 🇩🇰 Pil - Dronning Af Månen (feddit.dk / Denmark)
  • 🇫🇷 Bagarre - ON EST LES MÊMES (jlai.lu / France)
  • 🇭🇺 Azahriah - introvertált dal ([email protected] / Hungary)
  • 🇬🇧 The Northern Boys - Sexy Train (feddit.uk / UK)
  • 🇦🇶 Casette Beasts - Your Inception (programming.dev / Programming)
  • 🇳🇿 Tiki Taana - Tangaroa (lemmy.nz / New Zealand)

You will be asked to rank the songs from your favourite to least favourite ; you may notice that users from specific instance cannot rank the song their instance has submitted, in order to keep things fair. Users from non-participating instances can still participate in the voting, and self identify as third party. Let me know if there's any issue with the form!

Enjoy! 🎶

I realise this is a known issue and that lemmy.world isn't the only instance that does this. Also, I'm aware that there are other things affecting federation. But I'm seeing some things not federate, and can't help thinking that things would be going smoother if all the output from the biggest lemmy instance wasn't 50% spam.

Hopefully this doesn't seem like I'm shit-stirring, or trying to make the Issue I'm interested in more important than other Issues. It's something I mention occasionally, but it might be a bit abstract if you're not the admin of another instance.

The red terminal is a tail -f of the nginx log on my server. The green terminal is outputting some details from the ActivityPub JSON containing the Announce. You should be able to see the correlation between the lines in the nginx log, and lines from the activity, and that everything is duplicated.

This was generated by me commenting on an old post, using content that spawns an answer from a couple of bots, and then me upvoting the response. (so CREATE, CREATE, LIKE, is being announced as CREATE, CREATE, CREATE, CREATE, LIKE, LIKE). If you scale that up to every activity by every user, you'll appreciate that LW is creating a lot of work for anyone else in the Fediverse, just to filter out the duplicates.
