It was such a perfect ending to the series. Until it wasn't.

I liked Frieza better. Partly because the whole Namek arc was this cool cat and mouse race to find the dragon balls while ducking him. Trying to trust former baddie Vegeta. Then it being Piccolo's home coming. Finally the face off with the strongest being in the universe. The ending of Goku achieving the legendary super saiyan to Vegeta's shock, bittersweet for him because it wasn't him doing it but he got to see Frieza eat shit. Then finally a cliff hanger if Goku survives Namek explodin' or not.

The series felt very [insert universe strongest baddie here] after Frieza. Okay maybe a pass for the androids because it was cool to see Future Trunks but I didn't like Cell and I really stopped paying attention during Buu.

The Frieza saga was the last real story arc in the series. It had a coherent premise for the fighting and powering up and whatnot, along with fun character development and stakes that felt relevant to said characters. Everything after felt like the anime adaptation of a fighting game.

Everything after felt like the anime adaptation of a fighting game.

Apt. Everything felt very video-game-y afterwards.

Cell Saga was cool because even the lower power fighters made some contributions. From Buu Saga forward it's just the story of super saiyans. Except Tien, who made an attempt at Buu cause he's a wild man.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 11 months ago

Future Trunks is maybe my fav character that isn't Goku, but i'm a sucker for time travel shit. The History of Trunks movie was great.

I think it would've been fine to continue if they had actually committed to handing off the protagonist stick to Gohan. Let people actually die so there can be permanent consequences at any point in the future of the story, keep things fresh, focus on different kinds of stories, etc. As long as it's the Goku and Vegeta show they're going to be getting up to the same shit, but Gohan could've moved the story in a genuinely new direction and let it evolve.

As it is, though, it's basically just marvel-tier slop. Which is fine I guess. I do like the slop. I see the big meat man go rawr and shake the universe and i go pog

[–] [email protected] 11 points 11 months ago

I literally did the soypoint-2 at the ending of Super so I can't judge

[–] [email protected] 9 points 11 months ago (1 children)

This is where I'm at, because you know Dragon Ball has always been Dragon Ball. That doesn't mean it can't or shouldn't be better, but people genuinely enjoyed the TOP arc.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 11 months ago

Hehe kefla go brrrrr

[–] [email protected] 21 points 11 months ago (2 children)

Agreed. The theme of fatherhood is so strong in that saga, which is the perfect theme for ending your series with a handoff to the protagonist's son. Buu Saga went on too long, DB Super honestly feels like Dragon Ball's "Zombie Simpsons" era - and now they're gonna tack even more into the universe because brrrrrrrrrrrr

Just let it die damn.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 11 months ago (3 children)

ive watched some of super, it's hilarious how they have to keep making up new SSJ stages. Oh so theyre blue now.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (1 children)

Super saiyan god vs Beerus - the energy of the fight is enough to destroy the multiverse

Two super saiyan god super saiyans (yes that's what the blue haired form is called lmao) - no problems mate why do you ask

Anyway the show rocks, peak kino

[–] [email protected] 7 points 11 months ago

Anyway the show rocks, peak kino

wholesome

[–] [email protected] 6 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I still don't under why they couldn't just call Super Saiyan God (the red form) just Saiyan God and Super Saiyan Blue (or whatever the fuck the blue form is called) Super Saiyan God, like???? Super Saiyan God literally looks like base form Goku but with red hair and Super Saiyan Blue looks like SSJ Goku but with blue hair

[–] [email protected] 11 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Because Blue wasn't in anyone's mind when Toriyama made up Super Saiyan God for the Battle of Gods movie. It was just an asspull for the RoF movie.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 11 months ago

huh I didn't know that! explains a lot actually. they still couldn't make up a better name for blue though huh

[–] [email protected] 4 points 11 months ago

I've never bothered to see anything past the original manga but I've always loved the design of SSJ4 because it ties everything back to the original Journey to the West Monkey King inspiration.

In the new stuff they just give Goku red, blue and grey hair dean-frown

spoilerAlso holy Christ does Super look godawful. Did all the animators on it have two broken wrists

[–] [email protected] 7 points 11 months ago

But but how will we get more team four star slop?

[–] [email protected] 19 points 11 months ago (1 children)

the majinboo thing went on and on and on and it jumped the shark

[–] [email protected] 14 points 11 months ago (1 children)

I saw a little bit of Super in rehab, one of the guys was a fan of the show and I was like yeesh, it was so weird because the fights had really fast edits that made it feel like youtube clips spliced together. And the story behind it was yet another big ol' dumb tournament in the after life.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 11 months ago

Never touched that shit nor GT

[–] [email protected] 11 points 11 months ago

Agreed but without buu saga we couldn't have the bestest (and most campiest) form ever - SSJ3

[–] [email protected] 10 points 11 months ago (2 children)
[–] [email protected] 12 points 11 months ago (1 children)

The buu saga was funny, or fat buu was? Fat Buu is entertaining at least.

[–] [email protected] 18 points 11 months ago

Fat Buu becoming friends with Hercule specifically was great

[–] [email protected] 5 points 11 months ago

Buu no like you! Buu make you cho-co-late!

[–] [email protected] 9 points 11 months ago

The Great Saiyaman Arc and parts of the World Tournament Arc right afterwards are actually the highlight of the series to me (subs, if that matters). They're just so silly and low stakes and don't spend hours fighting the same fight. Like, I was actually laughing at Goten and Trunks in a trench coat.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (1 children)

Mostly agree, I like Buu well enough but the saga dragged on terribly. Super has been 90% miss for me, though I thoroughly enjoyed the two most recent movies. Piccolo was always my favorite character and anything that makes him relevant again gets my uncritical support. DB Super Hero even follows up on a bit of that Cell saga Gohan focus that got abandoned with Buu.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 11 months ago

yea i did like that Piccolo movie that came out last year or whenever.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 11 months ago

Idk I MOSTLY agree but then we wouldnt have gotten Vegeta's sacrifice yaknow? And thats big doins.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 11 months ago

but I liked Gohan's high school arc. Toriyama should've committed to the super sentai bit.

show should have ended with part i remember from kid years

[–] [email protected] 7 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (1 children)

Nah, this really isn't that. This is a common opinion even among fans of the show and the parts of the show which came after the point being referenced. The Cell arc was really written as a finale, or at the very least as a major shift to the status quo, and all that was undone in the next arc where it became very apparent how shamelessly they were going to keep milking this universe.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 11 months ago

Yeah I'm just fuckin around, I haven't seen past Frieza so I have no idea

[–] [email protected] 5 points 11 months ago

Boo was just more cell really

[–] [email protected] 5 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Wasn't there some later story arc where pretty much everyone on planet Earth was killed except for a few Z-Fighters and it was just a "oh shit that just happened, ok moving on" moment in the overall series? posadist-nuke

[–] [email protected] 6 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Everyone on earth has been killed a few times but it never stuck. Except in the timeline Future Trunks is from where ... yeah everyone in the entire universe was killed and they were just like "well that sucks"

[–] [email protected] 4 points 11 months ago

yeah everyone in the entire universe was killed and they were just like "well that sucks"

Hey now,

spoilerThey also doubled the number of Zenos

[–] [email protected] 4 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Agree, Buu very quickly went off the rails and down hill. But as an old guy, Super is the remake of GT right?

[–] [email protected] 11 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (2 children)

Super isn't a remake of anything, it's a direct continuation of the story after Z and has basically no similarities to GT at all. Except for arguably being not very good.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 11 months ago

I like super 1000x better than GT, tbh. GT tried too hard to be edgy.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

Except for arguably being not very good.

Would you like it more or less if they removed every plot not centered on food?

Can I offer you a Day of Fate cover in these trying times?

Just watch DBZ Abridged and then watch Battle of Gods and Resurrection F, then ignore everything else.

Actually the movie fan edit of the future trunks saga was ok, but yeah super is deeply mid. Actually the original cut of DBZ is kinda mid too, Kai fixes some of it but it's still way too fucking long. Abridged is basically the canon DBZ experience IMO.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 11 months ago

Dragon Ball Z should have ended.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 11 months ago

I agree completely

[–] [email protected] 2 points 11 months ago

I felt like the Buu saga had weaknesses, but overall I still liked what it had to offer the canon:

The fusion dance (but also potara earrings); I mean it birthed a ton of fused fanfic characters and such, that should tell you how awesome it was.

Some of Buu's forms like Super Buu; these ranged from the cool (Kid Buu) to the kind of silly (The first Buu form).

The Great Saiyaman; watching Gohan try and be a Sentai superhero was actually kind of funny and very humanizing.

"Everyone give Goku your energy!"; now that's a powerful ending.

There were though some stuff I felt was terrible, for example their introduction of super saiyan 3; Super Saiyan 1 and 2 were introduced in a really cool fashion, but Super Saiyan 3's introduction was terrible, add on that as well that he was merely holding his own against Kid Buu and failed to fight off Super Buu (or maybe it was Buuhan) and you have a form that's not even being presented as cool and powerful as SSJ1 and SSJ2 were presented.

The Frieza and Android arcs did so much, and indeed the Frieza arc was probably the strongest arc in the entire show, but I really feel like the Buu saga offered a lot to the existing canon.

Dragon ball super though I certainly hate; I wrote a gigantic essay at one point to break down how much I hated it; I hated it so much that by the time I finished writing it I realized from someone's post that I'd entirely forgotten about the evil Vegeta clone arc.

Hilariously though, I still love the world of DBZ so much that I still get excited to watch the anime when it comes out.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 11 months ago

yeah, I agree.
