Shortcut: use Tailscale to create your own private network and avoid hosting on the big, bad Internet. Otherwise, you really have to be careful on how you protect your services.

Minor downside (or upside) is that you'll have to install the Tailscale app on each device you want to make part of the network.

This made hosting at home a lot easier for me.

Update: Ah! I misread the post. Tailscale doesn't make sense for this use case. My bad! ๐Ÿ˜…

7 years of updates is nice

True actually. Browsing Subscribed is better than All. Although, you have to venture out into All to find new communities to subscribe to.

I also found switching between Hot and Active sorts mixes things up.

You have to block A LOT of communities. In fact, blocking communities is more important than subscribing to them!

Also: Voyager (or other apps) with filters for keywords.

Lab-grown rocks

When I was getting married a few years ago, I remember thinking fuck real diamonds lab-grown are literally the same thing. I remember getting some push back from some weirdos about how "real" diamonds are some how better or how people will think I'm a cheapskate or how people will feel bad for my wife...

Well, fast forward a few years and literally nobody cares, thinks about, or has said anything negative about my wife's ring. We are both 1000000% happy and satisfied with the decision to buy lab grown.

Well, that was disappointing. I guess that explains why he deleted his Mastadon account recently.

Forgejo

I believe https://codeberg.org/ is a hosted Forgejo instance. It has a more familiar UI, similar to GitHub.

Although, they have restrictions on the types of projects they're willing to host.

Hell yes. lemmy.world has always been slow for me. That's why I switched!

Being a DIYer is a good way to boycott stuff. Scumbag mechanic trying to screw you on the oil change? DIY. Scumbag cloud company, trying to hold your data hostage? DIY, self host or write your own!

Obviously it doesn't work with everything, but for certain things it works really well.

It's really hard to boycott when you've been de-skilled and depend on a service.

If all my friends, family, and coworkers could get off WhatsApp, I would be so happy.

Eh, names may sound stupid at first, but after saying it a million times it'll start to sound normal. "Google" sounded stupid and silly when they just first started, but now it sounds formal and makes you think of dystopia and dread.
