Hurt is the obvious answer, Trent Renzor basically officially handed that song to Johnny Cash.

Post well known tunes into the megathread. Post fresh vibes individually.

I had no clue that was a cover, the Cash version is just so....natural.
I fall into the Trent Reznor camp on this. The Johnny Cash version is undoubtedly great, but a little... toothless(?)... compared to the original?
but a little... toothless(?)... compared to the original?
if you watch the music video it's clearly meant to be the lamentation of a dying old man which is why it feels toothless
And for a more personal pick, John Coltrane's My Favorite Things.
All Along the Watchtower
Hard agree, they even put it in wolfenstein /hj
I seem to be the only person to disagree with this :(
The Times They Are A-Changin' covered by Flogging Molly
Original a Bob Dylan song and a bit boring tbh.
that is way better
Damn right it is
Tainted Love by Soft Cell and I also prefer the Midge Ure version of The Man Who Sold The World.
As for worst covers I propose Behind Blue Eyes by Limp Bizkit.
Nobody has ever agreed with me, but I think Sheryl Crow's version of "Sweet Child o Mine" is much better - the original is too whiny, I hate his voice.
I will now accept your scorn.
Tbh Iβve never heard of that version so Iβll check it out. Admittedly, I like the high pitched wailing of the original, but art is subjective and there are very few wrong answers.
This is very kind of you to say β€οΈ
Here's the link for your future "enjoyment" - sorry for my lib behavior, I edited it into the original comment too
Nah you can have it, its a good version. The best thing about the g&r version is the bass, its the most well produced bass on like any recording ever. Other than that its bogged down with Axl and Slash just being massive cliches, parodies of their own success.
I am going to memorize this comment to use as a reply the next time I catch flack for this!
Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah is better than the original Leonard Cohen version IMO, but both are good.
edit: Speaking of Jeff Buckley, also his cover of Mama You Been On My Mind (Bob Dylan).
Lilac wine is also a cover technically, I think
everyone's favorite blues & country song they probably are enjoying a 'cover' but idk if that term really applies when no-one knows or listens to the original
even when it's known like you're not really gonna tell me the Kinks & Kokomo Arnold are doing the same song with 'Milkcow Blues', folks will change basically everything about a blues song and claim it's the same real theseus ass shit
I was gonna say Hannes Wader's live rendition of the International so I'll put that here since that follows the same principles
Iron and Wine - Such Great Heights (cover of The Postal Service) I think is equivalent to the original
Rage Against the Machine - The Ghost of Tom Joad
Rage Against the Machine - Maggie's Farm
Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower
Johnny Cash - Hurt
A Perfect Circle - The Nurse Who Loved Me
Mr. Sandman covered by Blind Guardian.
Another man of culture. Although I find their cover, of "to france" to be top as well
Yeah this is one of my hot takes
I don't hate the Shatner version actually, it's just that the original is so good
There's no topping this cover of My Heart Will Go On (Titanic)
I thought you were gonna link the Dragonforce version which I unironically love

I Fought the Law by The Clash
All their covers are great: Jail Guitar Doors, Police and Thieves, Pressure Drop -- But I Fought the Law is like the best rock cover ever, or at least very close to the top
This PD48 cover of BTS' The Truth Untold is infinitely better than the original. The girls' performance is raw and powerful and it shines because of its rough edges and ambition. By comparison the original is an overproduced autotuned mess.
I know it's an idol elimination show and it's hammed up, but when Miyu's part hits at 1:49 it never fails to make me misty eyed.
I know I can (probably) get away with the BTS disrespect here since I don't think there are many fans on hexbear, but on the other hand I've outed myself as a lapsed kpop fan, so that's its own price to pay.
None of them, they're all bad
You donβt mean that about Hendrix
The entire album The Cover Up by The Protomen.
I don't know how but they managed to make every single song better, it amazes me everytime.
Also, the album cover goes hard.
Four string winds by Ollie Austin. Or anything Ollie Austin covered. Love his voice
This is barely on topic but I can't stop thinking about this every couple of months for the past like, 10 years
They did some weird covers of various pop songs for Bioshock Infinite. They were basically songs going though whatever timewarp shit they had going on in that game, lyrics or recordings leaking out into the public, and then being covered by 1910's musicians. They did like Tainted Love, Fortunate Son, and a bunch of other relatively modern songs.
They also had this timewarp shit happening and sending you back to Rapture, the original underwater haven from the first game, but showing you what it was like before everything collapsed. Part of the premise of the first game was basically all these people got suckered into signing up for Libertarian Disneyland, thinking they'd become prosperous, while it was really about the biggest richest asshole dominating everyone else... ancapistan. He lured them to the bottom of the sea with promises of freedom and self-actualization only to kill them for trying to unionize their backbreaking shit jobs.
This is all to say I want a one-man folk blues guitar cover of Badfish by Sublime lmao
think about it... THINK ABOUT IT
I think that would transcend the original
Spiderbait Black Betty Cover from the Ghost Rider OST. Same for ghost riders from the sky.
Respect by Aretha Franklin is an obvious one, completely turned the Otis Redding version on its head
A few I adore are Disturbed's cover of Sound of Silence, his vocals are unreal. A less known one is The Ghost of Tom Joad by Junip - the vibe seems to fit the song so much better. Also, First Aid Kit's cover of Running Up That Hill.
For me it has to be the Cradle of Filth cover of "Hallowed be thy name".
The goth energy of the subject matter is just perfect for some filth. The developments in metal sound since Sabbath invented a ton of it are admittedly a factor, but sometimes a classic can be perfected long after it became one. No shade intended towards the Icons who created the original.
Brother Louie by Kim Kwang Suk (RIP) & Pochonbo Electronic Ensemble
Screaming Females have a cover of Taylor Swift's Shake It Off that just fucking kills. Strips out the pop production for raw, aggressive defiance.
"Omaha" by the Gourds
Most covers of Gary Moore songs. The guy was an amazing songwriter and musician, but Nightwish made Over the Hills and Far Away simply better with Tarja's singing and the use of keyboard.
