This happened in my art class once. Our kooky art teacher invited an ex-student in without any prior warning and we were supposed to ask him questions on his art (he did book covers).

Silence, no one was having this shit. Out of pity I asked him questions on some tiny details I noticed on the spot. More silence, I ask about different tiny details. And so forth.

I've realised that there's a large portion of the populace that are perfectly comfortable in excruciating silence if it's not at their expense.

Kids are weirdly resilient. It sounds like you should have deep scars across your body, but I know for a fact that they all probably faded in a year or two. Damn kids with their super powers.

It does sound like you were harbouring a lot of unconscious guilt that manifested at a strange time. You were a kid, you didn't know you were doing harm, but you did later and tried to atone.

There was an icy patch on the playground one day and people were taking turns sliding on it. One kid fellover and I went down after him and my stomach fell on his upturned shoe. All the wind rushed out of me and everything went black for a few seconds until I woke up on the ground

I'll go with the Alzabo from Gene Wolf's worlds. Mimics the intelligence of anything it eats and begs its prey to be eaten in the voice of (already eaten) loved ones.

The people who submit, don't do so out of momentary stupidity, but because the Alzebo/Loved Ones make such a compelling case that the only way to be reunited again is to join the beast.

I've moved back to my country of birth and Taco Bell seems to be a thing here now.

I've tried the quesadillas and the crunch supreme and it's been... life changing.
