I'll go with the Alzabo from Gene Wolf's worlds. Mimics the intelligence of anything it eats and begs its prey to be eaten in the voice of (already eaten) loved ones.

The people who submit, don't do so out of momentary stupidity, but because the Alzebo/Loved Ones make such a compelling case that the only way to be reunited again is to join the beast.

The poppy seeds don't contain the opiate, the surrounding latex contains it (visual: pomegranate seeds, and the inedible flesh you free it from).

Some of that opiate might get on the seeds, but its mixed into such quantities with other poppy seeds that the potency level is diluted to virtually nothing.

I think the book Sapiens makes the point that wheat has trained us into cultivating it for selfish needs.

(Except that it's wheat, and that we annihilated 99% of its brethren to pick out the one that we liked so we could effectively clone it. But yes, we are the slaves...)

There's this old game I was taught to play at Christmas called wet biscuit.

Essentially everyone sits in a circle around a cup of water and people take turns adding coasters under it, until the glass eventually spills

That's the ideal, but I imagine there'd be a great deal of equity required to get the ball rolling, and people wouldn't immediately change households to build a new utopia, but would likely have to go through the arduous process of either doing the work, or setting up the committees to do the work.

The end goal would be different, but I imagine it would be the same daily slog, just with perhaps slightly better hours, and maybe less enthusiasm for doing it since the threat of homelessness and starvation would no longer dangle above our heads.

A small minority would bounce out of bed every morning with a burning passion to complete the mission, but I think that same minority tend to be the ones who happily work dog hours and dog wages in feel-good startups

I've moved back to my country of birth and Taco Bell seems to be a thing here now.
