I think we’re pretty heavy on software and some electrical engineers around here (I’m both, lol), and this place HATES the lack of physical buttons and touch screen everything. We seem to hate that almost as much as AI, advertising, and tech CEOs, lol.

It’s almost always business decisions. The product managers chase what the market is doing, and everybody from them to the accountants, manufacturing, and the executives love the idea of removing parts and reducing costs.

You don’t say you’re a conservative, but this is a pretty weak gotcha like they love to try.

First, damage to inanimate objects is when you invoke the word empathy? (Yes, before you ask, it is bad to destroy people’s stuff just like it would be bad to take the same value directly out of their wallet)

Second, “the party of empathy” suggests to me you’re a fellow American and you’re calling the commenters a bunch of Democrats. They are way too far to the right for most of Lemmy. Most discussions over the past few months have been about either how bad they are, or whether it is/was worth voting for them just to avoid a second Trump term.

They are right on those two points, though: Americans are way too much into property/money/materialism, and many put way too much money into their cars.

That doesn’t mean it’s OK to vandalize people’s cars (especially older models), and I DO care about stuff I’ve worked for. But it’s still true.

And yes it’s not exclusive to Americans. But we’re pretty damn bad about it. We are the land of the $80,000 commuter and grocery getter truck that uses twice as much gasoline as a normal car.

I tried to frame it like “huh that’s funny” and not as an insult. But it’s probably inevitable that some would take offense or just downvote to disagree. No issue with them.

I’m not a hex/MLer, but I don’t try to antagonize them either. And even if I wanted to, I’ve been here long enough to know that the dogpile was still coming, lol.

What people get mad at you about is your insistence that checking the box next to somebody’s name on a ballot is a gesture of 100% support for everything on their agenda and everything they have ever done.

The genocide over there and everywhere else is not okay. The fact that the US supports it and does tons of imperialist shit is not okay.

I voted for Harris and genocide is not ok. But you know what else? I have a smart phone and exploited foreign labor is not ok. I have to drive my old car to work and fossil fuels, greenhouse gas emissions, unwalkable towns, and microplastic pollution are not OK. I eat food, and both exploited underpaid migrant farm workers and corporation produced ultra-processed foods are not OK.

The fact that the US is imperialist and supports Israel was simply not on the presidential ballot in the general election. That is not OK, but it is true. Changing that part of the world for the better means working to make the next election’s choices better, whether that means the peaceful rise of a charismatic progressive candidate or a bloody revolution accelerated into being by shot Trump is doing.

I still don't get why people have such an issue calling people what they want to be called.

Why?

Normally I’m the type to wax philosophical for a few paragraphs about what the heck may be going on in their heads, but honestly I think it’s assholes being proud to be assholes. Punching down just feels so good. That and people who are suffering enough that they don’t care about others, but don’t realize they need to work on their mental health. Or they’ve been conditioned to see doing that as a character flaw or weakness. And of course the snowball effect of those people raising the next generation of assholes, building up some inertia behind the generational trauma.

Because underlying it all, regardless of which impactful arguments they think they are making or refuting, they just don’t want to be nice to people that are different.

That’s on par with the fundraising goal for my kid’s elementary school. About a dollar per person in the district.

Totally different situation though, since these suckers at the school are going to spend it on a bunch of kids who haven’t even labored in the mines for it.

This place is so much better for actually discussing things.

Sounds to me like we need universities and maybe even governments to be running Lemmy instances.

the agency is soliciting pitches from private companies to monitor threats across the internet — with a special focus on social media.

We wouldn’t want to be held back by any restrictions placed on actual law enforcement agents, I guess?

My assumption is they will get taken to the cleaners by some company that will set up an AI monitor that barfs false positives at the agency all day.
