I got so used to using it, filtering params manually and route editing when needed, that I find myself do it manually in a notepad on my PC lol. Does anyone know and OSS software that does that? From my searches I found only one app that claims to do that, but isn't OSS so I put it on hold. Worse case I'll block its access to the internet though.

Greetings, fellow FOSS fanatics! I've been scouring the internet in the past month for any kind of open source implementation of the Miracast protocol that could run on Android (or Android TV) as a receiver with no luck.

I installed LineageOS 20 (Android 13) on my TV Box (Dynalink 4k / wade), but even though LineageOS for phones has retained the Miracast sender functionality after Google removed it from AOSP in favor of their stupid proprietary Chromecast, it seems the ATV version hasn't received a similar treatment as a receiver.

I think this is a real shame and a massive oversight, forcing us privacy-loving folk to either use Goolag services for Chromecast (if you're lucky enough that your device has it built-in), or resort to disgusting proprietary apps filled to the brim with ads, tracking and in-app purchases.

Is there a reason no FOSS Miracast / WifiDisplay receiver has ever been developed for Android? I found receivers made for Raspberry PI and Linux, but no Android, could one of those be adapted or compiled for Android? Note that I'm not a developer, so I might be talking mumbo-jumbo, sorry if that's the case :D

So, I know very little and have a poor understanding of the software licenses, hence why I'm asking.

I have a 'smart' thermostat that came with the new HVAC system. It is the AprilAire 8920W. It has a touchscreen, connects to wifi, does lots of 'computer' things. I cannot imagine that this furnace company built their own OS and kernel and everything else from scratch; it seems most likely it is running linux, yea? And with that, includes libraries and other tools that are under some version of the GPL, yea?

I went down the router rabbit-hole some weeks ago and found the firmware for routers available on the Linksys website, the Linksys site has this 'GPL Code Center'. I'm finding nothing of the sort from AprilAire, though...

So, if we assume that my 'smart' thermostat is running Linux (and, say, busybox, a common GPL-ed tool on small systems, like routers), they are obligated to provide the code for at least those pieces of software, right? They need to give me a CD or have a page on their website (and include the link in the manual) and all that?

Do they need to give me access to the entire firmware as well? The router folks do, but you also sometimes need to re-install the firmware manually, so that may not be a license issue.

However, how would we know if they are violating a license if we don't know what is running on it?

I'm curious about how the GPL / copy-left licenses work, and wondering if I found someone who is violating it. I also want to hack the thermostat to control it without the motherfuckin' cloud, but that is a bit separate.

I am trying to slowly de-Google-ify myself by moving to open source apps, I wanna ditch google notes and evernote. I tried obsidian, standard notes, and joplin, I liked using obsidian on PC and standard notes looks nice on android but obsidian you need to pay to have sync and standard notes doesn't do markdown unless you pay (are plugins only on PC???). Joplin has most features I need but I don't like how it looks/feels on android (haven't tried in PC yet)

Basically what I want the most in a notes app is offline with sync capability for phone and PC, would be nice to make folders for notes like notepads on evernote, and md is a big plus but I can live without it. I would love if I could use something like proton drive for cloud sync and wouldn't mind paying for obsidian if it was cheaper cuz $8 per month is too much for my minimum pay and I didnt see any cheaper plans.

EDIT: If no one has any better suggestions, I am thinking of trying to setup obsidian with syncthing.

TLDR: Companies should be required to pay developers for any open source software they use.

He imagines a simple yearly compliance process that gets companies all the rights they need to use Post-Open software. And they'd fund developers who would be encouraged to write software that's usable by the common person, as opposed to technical experts.

It's an interesting concept, but I don't really see any feasible means to get this to kick off.

I was a windows user back in 2019 - 2020, and moved over to Linux in 2021. I honestly forgot how i found Linux, and when I was using Windows, I remember using this feature "Game Bar", which I used to make game clips on my PC. Although, when I got my NVIDIA Card the Game Bar Stopped working because of the HDMI cord that modern GPU's use.

The Real Question, is there a program that replicates the Xbox Game bar? I really like the functionality that the game bar provides, and would like to start using it again, but on Linux. I was hoping if anyone knew of such program, or if you know the steps for me to build it myself. I found this Repository where someone made a clone, although it's for Windows, and not what I expected.

I like to use Pinterest to save and make boards of artworks for inspiration. The thing is, the desktop experience is weird at best, clunky and slow at worst. Any suggestions?

My question is:

Is their OpenWRT version actually reliable?

Like the title implies, I’m looking for a way to keep track of places I go. If the ratings system doesn’t exist, that’s okay. The important part is keeping track of places I’ve been, on what date and how often. I know this could be done with a spreadsheet, but that’s sounds like work, and I’m lazy. I couldn’t find anything similar, but maybe my search-fu is off given the holidays. What do you all use, or am I alone in this? Thanks!

Jonas Dressler from the GNOME project, who develops the GNOME Shell edition for mobile devices, has published developments that allow you to run the Aliendalvik environment (AppSupport) in regular Linux distributions. Aliendalvik is a layer for the Sailfish mobile platform that provides the launch of applications written for the Android platform. During the reverse engineering of Aliendalvik, patches for the Mutter composite server, scripts and bindings over the sound server and input system necessary to run Aliendalvik outside the Sailfish platform environment were prepared.
