Hello everyone

Yes I know, a few months ago a post with the exact same title was shared in this community by @[email protected]. But this was at a time when lemmy was still quite small. I would like to give the topic new momentum.

From their wiki:

ListenBrainz is a project by the MetaBrainz foundation which allows you to publicly store a record of all of the songs that you listen to. Using this data, we provide statistics, recommendations, and a platform for you and other developers to explore this data.

Many of you probably use a music streaming service. You share your user data with the company anyway, and some of it with others. If you feel like it, you can make your data available to the general public and help other open source apps to build their services on this data.

"After much consideration, we have decided to move Platformer off of Substack. Over the next few days, the publication will migrate to a new website powered by the nonprofit, open-source publishing platform Ghost. If you already subscribe to Platformer and wish to continue receiving it, you don’t need to do anything: your account will be ported over to the new platform."

Following their earlier demands to remove Mangadex extensions, Kakao now threatens to sue Tachiyomi developers (and also everyone who forked Tachiyomi). Let's discuss this exciting happening.

Don't be that guy. (lemmy.world)

When you're talking to an open source dev, just remember that they are literally giving you their time for free, and they are people who don't like to be treated poorly.

Edit: Just to be clear, I don’t mean any ill will toward the guy. He’s frustrated and he’s just taking it out in the wrong venue at the wrong people, but that doesn’t mean he’s a bad person.

Edit 2: The reinstalling he’s talking about is NPM. So just running npm install. It’s because he tried removing the node_modules directory, which is a reasonable thing to do, but it means you need to reinstall the modules with that command.

Hey guys, the Fedora shill is back again to invite you all to this year's Creative Freedom Summit, that will be hosted from 23-25 Jan.

It's a really nice event hosted by our Design Team for those that are interested in FOSS creative tools, like Inkscape, GIMP, Krita, Blender and more, as you'll be able to learn directly from its creators and or specialists in those tools.

It'll be all hosted using FOSS tools as well (Jitsi for the speakers, PeerTube for the event stream + Matrix for the live chat), check it out!

Also, for those that haven't seen last year's event, all of the talks are available on Fedora's YouTube channel and on the event's PeerTube channel!

Specifically I want to make a collage of many pictures. For that purpose the software should be able to handle many large pictures, and align them relative to each other (snap center to center, etc)

I'd like to avoid having to do it in libre office if at all possible.

Is there anything like that?

Twilio will abandon Authy desktop, a good opportunity to switch to an open-source app. That is if you manage to export the tokens from Authy. Without a convenient export, many users will be stuck.

The guides you can find online require an old versions of the desktop app. Is there a known way today? Do we know how/where Authy stores the secrets on-device?

The gesture support for additional signs is quite nice, but probably annoying if you are used to swipe keyboards.

After read this thread, I have an idea. Why not build a megathread with the best and most reliable FOSS apps too help someone who want to join on the bright side of open source?

I want to know if you agree with that. And if you agree, I will create one thread per week to discuss the best options to use on android. Dont know nothing about iPhone, so, if you want contribute, lets go, say what you feel.

But, this require your help. Help from all communities. We (because this is not from me, this is from us) need to share thoughts, ideas and all things you want to say. Dont be shy. Upvote the comments you like and agree; disagree and tell why you disagree. This is will be different from others threads because this need a proper user opinion, and your opinions will be VERY important to build this. In short, your opinions and thoughts will be the fundamental source to build this.

I will read ALL comments to build this. Even if this has a million comments, I'm going to waste time reading it. Whatever it takes.

If you need help, use Exodus site too see if any app has trackers.

(Apps from Simple Mobile Tools will not be accpeted, because they was bought from a shady guy)

I'm going to divide this by threads, as I said.. After one week, I will open the second thread. This first topic will be to discuss:

#1 - Contacts, SMS and Dialer

>The next ones will be

spoiler#2 – Calculator, Camera and Calendar

#3 – Manager files, Recorder and Gallery

#4 – Keyboard, Notes and Maps

#5 – Meteorology , Stores and social media

#6 – WebBrowsers and Important utilities

For now, this is my suggestions for this part one. Only on final (megathread) this is will be matters.

spoiler

>Contacts

~~- Right Contacts (from goodwy) – This app is only avaiable from PlayStore, however, the code is open as you can see here. Tell me if you agree with that, please. If you all disagree, I will delete this suggestions.~~

  • Simple Contacts Pro SE – This is will not update anymore, however I put it because, for now, I guess it works. Is a fork from Simple Concacts (SimpleMobileTools).

>SMS

  • QKSMS – If you like a minimal and simple sms app, you probably gonna like this.

~~- Right Messages (from goodwy) – Again, the code is open and you can see here. I like a lot these apps from goodwy.~~

>Dialer

~~- Right Dialer – Again, same thing from RightContacts and RightMessages. Code here.~~

  • Koler – Simple and beautiful app dialer. I used it. However, dont have the option to block anonymous calls.

Atuin replaces your existing shell history with a SQLite database, and records additional context for your commands. With this context, Atuin gives you faster and better search of your shell history!

Additionally, it provides optional and fully encrypted (E2EE) synchronisation of your history between machines, via an Atuin server, or you can self-host your own server. There is a single command to easily delete your data from the server too.

It supports zsh, bash, fish, and nushell shells right now.

The search is as easy as pressing the up arrow in the terminal and then scrolling back, or typing to search. But you could also type something like this to do a search [search for all successful make commands, recorded after 3pm yesterday atuin search --exit 0 --after "yesterday 3pm" make].

Atuin offers configurable full text or fuzzy search, filterable by host, directory, etc. As it has context around dates, times, exit code, and even the directory location form where a command was executed, you could use the -c flag to just search for commands run in a particular directory.

The sync function allows you to have the same history across terminals, across sessions, and across machines.

There is a quick start script that can be run to install it, otherwise you can also install from the various Linux repos. For manual installation, the steps I found to get going were:

  • Install Ble.sh and add it to your .bashrc (or other shell) file
  • Install Atuin and add it to your .bashrc (or other shell) file (after Ble.sh)
  • Restart your shell and run 'atuin import bash' to import my bash history into Atuin
  • Press up arrow to see if Atuin interactive search triggers

The link below has some good documentation as well a link to their source code.

See https://atuin.sh/

Is there a pull request template that does this?

Edit: I was worried about possibly needing to change license. For now I will just use a permissive license. The situation is made seemingly complicated by the possible need to use copylefted images, combined with the possible need for using server code (which shouldn't use creative commons) in addition to the static html. I would rather deal with including parts with different licenses (probably not as complicated as I initially thought) instead of contributor license agreements.

Edit 2: Also, license enforcement is not very important for my project.

Edit 3: Now I'm using creative commons zero and making the repo comply with https://reuse.software/

I created a CLI tool that can be used to create, update, list and export (to HTML) software design documents like Architecture Decision Records (ADR), Requests for Comments (RFC), and any other custom document types you may have.

It's already trivial to create a Markdown file from an existing template and start typing. And, you will have to do most of the job in your favorite editor anyway. Here is what talo brings to the table:

  • You can list all your documents displaying their titles and latest statuses.
  • You can export your documents to HTML. talo will link documents to each other so that when a document supersedes another, you will be able to navigate between the two via hyperlinks.
  • You are not limited to ADR and RFC. You can create your own document type(s) and use talo to manage them.

The demo GIF in the README showcases some of the use cases. Advanced topics like creating your own document types are also documented in the README.

talo is free and open source.

If you already have .NET SDK 8.0, you can install it as a dotnet tool (dotnet tool install --global Canpolat.Talo). Otherwise, you can download the single file binary executable for your system (Linux/Windows).

Eagle Mode (eaglemode.sourceforge.net)
submitted 9 months ago by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

Eagle Mode is a zoomable user interface (ZUI) with file manager, file viewers, games, and more. This project is about a futuristic style of human-computer interaction, where the user can visit almost everything simply by zooming in. It features a portable C++ programming interface for developing such ZUIs, and it features the Eagle Mode application, which provides a virtual cosmos with plugin applications.

The most important one is the professional file manager with its rich, scriptable command set. It integrates file viewers for most of the common file types, as well as an audio/video player. Furthermore, the virtual cosmos contains a chess game, a netwalk game, a 3D mines game, a multi-function clock, a stock watchlist, some fractals, and a Linux kernel configurator in form of a kernel patch.

An autoplay function allows to show or play things one ofter the other (e.g. slideshow of picture files or document pages, playing of multiple audio or video files).

The core of Eagle Mode supports fast anti-aliased graphics, virtually unlimited depth of zooming, extensive mouse and keyboard control, animated navigation with kinetic effects (inertia, friction, and magnetism), popup-zoomed control views, editable bookmarks, in-place help texts, and working with multiple windows.

Eagle Mode is distributed under the GNU General Public License version 3.

The downloaded files can then be used with something like MuseScore, to create your own PDF's of the guitar tabs.

PeerTube has some big problems currently with fashists, but is the only option as an YT alternative in the Fediverse.

I am not able to programm, I would love to create an alternative that somehow stops this facist bullshit (I have some ideas for that)

Dear Fedis, what will we do now?

I'm interested in selfhosting, if possible, an equivelant to last.fm -- it would analyze the history of what I listen to, and provide me with recommendations, and listening history reports.

Aside, last.fm as a federated service would be quite interesting. It would be neat to add a federated social media aspect to it.

I feel that Wikitionary is rather underappreciated. I would like to ues it as my main dictionary, but I haven't been able to find a good app that uses it as a backend.

Open Source principles applied to biotech is a way we can today fight against the capture of oligarchical seed companies of the very foods we all need to live. Check out here to see what organizations in your area are part of the Global Coalition of Open Source Seed Initiatives (GOSSI).

After debloat my android (i dont have a custom ROM for my oneplus) I started use Cromite and Mull. I used duckduckgo app during a few months, but sometimes I feel it a bit clunky. Overall is a good app but I decided try another browsers and forget about DDG. Mull has a good UI and has a nice tools like Ublock and others , but the connection .... Is VERY slow. Take a bunch of time to enter on any site, and I did this with and without uBlock.

Otherwise, we need to talk about Cromite... Fellas, Im speechless! What a browser. So responsive, fast and privacy friendly. Have a sandbox integrated too. I know Cromite has some bugs, i know, but for an open source app, is amazing, imo.

Im trying today PrivacyBrowser and looks very good too. I need more days to get a final conclusion, but feels very promissing for my point of view. Seems a little complicated to the beginning, but with more days i guess i will understand more

Give these apps (Cromite and PrivacyBrowser) a try. They deserve and I guess they dont let you down.

(Yeah, my english is pretty bad, sorry :/ )

This app track down the download or media playing progress and show progress bar around punch line camera or in notification bar. Pretty handy for people who download content or listen to music a lot.

Hello all! I hope this is the right place to ask.

I am using Evolution Mail, and I would like to change the calendar's weekly view horizontally. The top-to-bottom layout is rather confusing and hard to read, especially on an ultra-wide monitor. Similar to how this works in Outlook: time on the left and seven columns for the days.
