Hexbear thread

Why is it wrong to be critical of western propaganda?

https://lemmy.world/comment/1962328

okay this is freaking wild:

We need a sub dedicated to bot building, trolling and brigading effectively. Screw morals, or decency. They’re tools that maintain the status quo.

https://lemmy.world/comment/1959011

I definitely appreciate the hesitation in defederation, but I’m in favor of defeding with both hexbear and lemmygrad.

I’ve seen more than enough “Stalin did nothing wrong posts” to know that discussions are pointless and would lead me only to frustration and a desire to drink.

Freedom of speech does not constitute an obligation to listen.

Good for you!

Exactly. Freedom of speech != Freedom from social consequences :soyreddit:

Well, in a truly “free” society, yes freedom of speech would constitute freedom from “social consequences.” However, the United States, and in fact, no Earth government, is a truly free society. There are rules and laws that exist, thus restricting freedoms. However, specifically regarding freedom of speech as it is mentioned in US law, it specifically is a protection for citizens from retaliation by the US government, and does not cover interactions between citizens.

So I wouldn’t say “freedom of speech doesnt mean freedom from social consequences,” but rather “freedom of speech does not include a requirement that others listen.” There are laws with regards to how other citizens can respond, including laws against assault and libel and such. But there is no law that says anyone must to listen to what you have to say simply because you have the freedom to say it. Thats quite a preposterous idea.

At least in the US, each citizen has the right to say what they choose within the constraints established by law, and to choose who they will listen to. [-43]

As an instance owner myself some of this is concerning. I understand why lemmy.world would want to defederate from them. I won’t defederate on my instance at this point, but if personal attacks start to happen or rules get broken, then it will be considered.

https://lemmy.world/comment/1958492

I don’t agree with their sh*t and whatnot, but this move seems to me like “We will defederate you because your political beliefs are not the same as ours.” What a shame, Lemmyworld admins.

One chain of drama starts here, with @[email protected] whining about the tankies which live rent free in his head. A tankie (complete with pronouns😂) takes the bait, however:

Stupid god damn libs complain about tankies every time for these threads

this is just a teaser for the main event, however. Downthread, CCP hater @[email protected] remarks on lemmy's political character:

It’s facinating to see Lemmy go wild, kind of sad how many seem to support dictators with concentration camps and similar shit but also cool how many downvote them!

In response, Israel hater @[email protected] responds with this based and dramapilled take:

The only state with concentration camps in the real world is the USA and its colony in Palestine.

The drama continues on, worth reading if you have the time. Here's some other snippets from this post:

@[email protected] who notices the insularity of lemlibs:

Can’t exist on same server as people with different ideology reeeee

and immediately gets accused of being a conservative 🤣

as well as attracting the ire of the above-mentioned @[email protected], who engages in misplaced anti-Turkish bigotry:

They’re like an infestation. Quick get the roach spray!

Stupid anarchists (but I repeat myself) have a stupid discussion over some dumb shit, idk, I didn't read it.

They miss out on the dumbest take award. Which I am proud to present to @[email protected], for this banger of a comment, for complaining about being other people being redditpilled, before going on to engage in the most classic of redditor behaviors, moral grandstanding:

The entire thing sucks lol. Sorry you dipshits are so Reddit pilled you still only have one joke. Instead of saying lol he’s just like hitler lol he doesn’t like it when us dank memers refer to him as a cartoon character, you should share the numerous human rights atrocities he’s commited and call for his public execution

And that's a wrap folks!

The dev of an alternate site Squabbles, makes an announcement post stating that their site now has Titles when making a post.

Mod states: "this is a rule 2 violation", aka 30 days cool off period to promote an alternative by a user*.* The sidebar rule actually doesn't mention anything about the 30 days cool off period.

When called out, the mod clarifies: "ugh sorry i see the confusion. sidebar rule 2":

Do not post official updates, changes, or announcements for a reddit alternative if a previous update, change, or announcement was posted here for that same alternative in the last 30 days, or the alternative was first posted here less than 30 days ago, unless exceptional circumstances warrant it.

When a user calls out the mod for power tripping, they respond: "how does a daily squabbles post sound to you?"

When a user states that the whole purpose of the sub is to let users know about Reddit Alternatives, the mod responds: "hurr durr we should just have no rules and no moderation. it'll be like craigslist but even better!"

When another user states in a civil manner with a suggestion that once a day or once a week should be reasonable, the mod responds: "it's per poster, fucktard"

Squabbles dev suggests: "Thanks for the heads up. Though I think 30 days is too much. If you don't mind a suggestion, I think 2 weeks seems to be more reasonable? There are a lot of people who visit sporadically or for the first time that won't see a lot of these posts."

To which the mod responds: "nope, you're a shameful spammer that should focus on your product instead of marketing it"

The dev clarifies: "I work on my product 8+ hours a day. In your ideal world "you build it, and they will come" but that's just not true in the real world. And I've only posted a few times in the past few weeks in here. You've also been giving preferential treatment to pretty much every other alternative here. They've ALL posted many official updates and you haven't touched them. You even deleted an organic post with 1k upvotes and 20 awards when we had our first jump in users. I posted once in a week and you tell me I'm violating a rule that every other alternative has been breaking constantly."

Mod rage quits: "spam away, i quit this sub. you know the rule says 30 days."

Another farewell comment by the mod: "enjoy the spam fest. i quit."

The Drama Keeps On Giving. The Mod Has Made Their Way To Squabbles Also It Seems, To Give Their Valuable Opinion.

Eventually, he deleted his comments, but here is the direct link to the Squabbles thread

They’re not really much debate going on in this community. 95% of all posts are just “lol republican dumb Nazis” and every comment that’s not agreeing is downvoted to hell. [-23]

Perfectly proves my point.

This community is just “if you’re not “vote blue no matter who” you’re a dumb nazi”. [-24]

This is tengaged.com, a reality TV online social site that doubles as a place to play games. It's used almost exclusively by 30 year old biofoids and sometimes homosexuals to larp as contestants on old shows like survivor, big brother, etc. from when the site was launched in 2008. It's ridiculously active for what it is and consists of mentally regressed users who present themselves like characters in a 2000s girl game

Due to the site being filled with women, there is constant drama, twitterspeak nonsense and a general vibe of people being mentally stuck in their teenage years despite having hit the :marseywall: long ago. Frequently people type like facebook moms with mental issues, which a lot of the users are considering the pregnancy posts

(yes, somehow the site has pph comparable to the sharty)

As for the actual games on the site, I have no idea what they look like but it's evident that users take them seriously. People put long descriptions of their current in-game roles in their bios, where they also pretend to be doing srs bsns with their internet friends or something idk. Honestly I have no idea if this site is really that bad, maybe it's just filled with basic people and I'm reading it wrong

A brief timeline of the events leading up to this drama:

(screenshots taken from the public malefashionadvice discord)

This brings us to today, when Reddit admins put out a request for new MFA mods.

Most of the comments are not welcoming to the call for moderators:

Some users responded to the call, but were met with criticism.

Some other goodies:

  • ~~The MFA Wiki has a big link to the discord at the top.~~ (see update 1 below). The Wiki history page shows that the discord link was added to the Wiki, then removed by the admins, then re-added by the same user.

  • The default comment sort for MFA is now controversial.

Update 1: admins have rolled back the Wiki by 3 years because of the discord link added.

Update 2: several comments that responded negatively to mod applications in the thread, such as the "only rats cross the line" comment linked above in this post, have been removed by admins.

Kolektiva is an anti-colonial anarchist collective that offers federated social media to anarchist collectives and individuals in the fediverse. For the social movements and liberation!

In mid-May 2023, the home of one of Kolektiva.social's admins was raided, and all their electronics were seized by the FBI. The raid was part of an investigation into a local protest. Kolektiva was neither a subject nor target of this investigation. Today, that admin was charged in relation to their alleged participation in this protest.

Unfortunately, at the time of the raid, our admin was troubleshooting an issue and working with a backup copy of the Kolektiva.social database. This backup, dated from the first week of May 2023, was in an unencrypted state when the raid occurred and it was seized, along with everything else.

The database is the heart of a Mastodon server. A database copy such as the one seized may include any of the following user data, in this case up to date as of early May 2023:

  • User account information like the e-mail address associated with your account, your followers and follows, etc.
  • All your posts: public, unlisted, followers-only, and direct ("DMs").
  • Possibly IP addresses associated with your account - IP addresses on Kolektiva.social are logged for 3 days and then deleted, so IP addresses from any logins in the 3 days prior to the database backup date would be included.
  • A hashed ("encrypted") version of your password.

Orange Site discussion (mostly debating what anarchism actually means)

Yet another pathetic slapfight

Being an attractive foid is playing life on easy mode though. 5'2 BIPOC isn't gonna have it so good

Sounds like cope for not being as successful and hard-working as me. I knew this reply was coming because the userbase is as predictable and obvious as the phases of the moon

Yes, being an attractive woman has no advantages whatsoever. You definitely have made it entirely on your own hardwork and have had no benefits from your looks. Which is why you weren't attention whore posting on reddit, and attention whore posting your half naked shots here. You absolutely would be just as successful if you were an ugly, 5'2 manlet BIPOC with the same degree. At least own that having big tits and being hot is a benefit you neurodivergent bitch.

Teachers’ close relationship with students - Where are the boundaries?

How do you guys feel about the “cool teachers”? I have a sincere question about when you decided to draw the line. Perhaps it was the school dynamic or culture at my school that allowed teacher-student connections to be more friend-friend relationships.

For reference, there was a recent scandal where a teacher at my HS had an Only Fans, a student exposed her, and she got reprimanded for it. The thing is, teachers causally talked about her situation to the students like they were friends. One teacher even went as far as to buy her OF, and show some of his favorite students her videos, which then led her to threaten him with charges. Since this was a big scandal, everyone talked about it. One student even showed one of his favorite teachers the video to “discuss” about whether it was her or not, and instead of taking the right actions, she sat there casually talking about the situation with a 16 y/o.

Where is the line drawn, and why do some teachers feel the need to just casually act like this with students. Even then, that culture at my HS was so normalized to the point that a small amount of students felt that it was wrong to discuss and show others her videos.

Genuinely, like why do some teachers feel the need to be the “cool teacher”. What happened to the women was beyond horrific and for the teachers to casually talk to about it with the students was very much out of line. I feel like some students are wayyyyy to comfortable with the teachers and vice versa. How do other teachers who draw lines/boundaries with the students feel about this, and how can you promote an environment to stop this?

Edit: Some of the “cool teachers” in the comments are getting pretty defensive. As in “cool teacher”, I’m talking about the self-declared ones who talk to the students like y’all are friends instead of authority figures, people who are a little TOO close, and those who share inappropriate info. I should be able to have a filter and know what and what not to talk about when speaking to you, and that there are limits to our student-teacher relationship.

Just wondering, would be nice if we could get a bot that directly crossposts the reddit drama posts from rdrama net straight to this community with some context. That site looks like aids but the content is pretty good, would be nicer to browse through lemmy, and we can comment here (Im not giving those weirdos my email, or even an alt).

Im willing to to post the best stuff from there formatted back to here like once every couple days but it would go faster with a nerd here that can make some decent bot to scrape the best content.

TLDR: I want to see drama without big negro man doing squats and dances on my phonescreen in public.
