Well, in a truly “free” society, yes freedom of speech would constitute freedom from “social consequences.” However, the United States, and in fact, no Earth government, is a truly free society. There are rules and laws that exist, thus restricting freedoms. However, specifically regarding freedom of speech as it is mentioned in US law, it specifically is a protection for citizens from retaliation by the US government, and does not cover interactions between citizens.

So I wouldn’t say “freedom of speech doesnt mean freedom from social consequences,” but rather “freedom of speech does not include a requirement that others listen.” There are laws with regards to how other citizens can respond, including laws against assault and libel and such. But there is no law that says anyone must to listen to what you have to say simply because you have the freedom to say it. Thats quite a preposterous idea.

As an instance owner myself some of this is concerning. I understand why lemmy.world would want to defederate from them. I won’t defederate on my instance at this point, but if personal attacks start to happen or rules get broken, then it will be considered.

The dev of an alternate site Squabbles, makes an announcement post stating that their site now has Titles when making a post.

Mod states: "this is a rule 2 violation", aka 30 days cool off period to promote an alternative by a user*.* The sidebar rule actually doesn't mention anything about the 30 days cool off period.

When called out, the mod clarifies: "ugh sorry i see the confusion. sidebar rule 2":

Do not post official updates, changes, or announcements for a reddit alternative if a previous update, change, or announcement was posted here for that same alternative in the last 30 days, or the alternative was first posted here less than 30 days ago, unless exceptional circumstances warrant it.

When a user calls out the mod for power tripping, they respond: "how does a daily squabbles post sound to you?"

When a user states that the whole purpose of the sub is to let users know about Reddit Alternatives, the mod responds: "hurr durr we should just have no rules and no moderation. it'll be like craigslist but even better!"

When another user states in a civil manner with a suggestion that once a day or once a week should be reasonable, the mod responds: "it's per poster, fucktard"

Squabbles dev suggests: "Thanks for the heads up. Though I think 30 days is too much. If you don't mind a suggestion, I think 2 weeks seems to be more reasonable? There are a lot of people who visit sporadically or for the first time that won't see a lot of these posts."

To which the mod responds: "nope, you're a shameful spammer that should focus on your product instead of marketing it"

The dev clarifies: "I work on my product 8+ hours a day. In your ideal world "you build it, and they will come" but that's just not true in the real world. And I've only posted a few times in the past few weeks in here. You've also been giving preferential treatment to pretty much every other alternative here. They've ALL posted many official updates and you haven't touched them. You even deleted an organic post with 1k upvotes and 20 awards when we had our first jump in users. I posted once in a week and you tell me I'm violating a rule that every other alternative has been breaking constantly."

Mod rage quits: "spam away, i quit this sub. you know the rule says 30 days."

Another farewell comment by the mod: "enjoy the spam fest. i quit."

This is going nowhere but lol

This is tengaged.com, a reality TV online social site that doubles as a place to play games. It's used almost exclusively by 30 year old biofoids and sometimes homosexuals to larp as contestants on old shows like survivor, big brother, etc. from when the site was launched in 2008. It's ridiculously active for what it is and consists of mentally regressed users who present themselves like characters in a 2000s girl game

Due to the site being filled with women, there is constant drama, twitterspeak nonsense and a general vibe of people being mentally stuck in their teenage years despite having hit the :marseywall: long ago. Frequently people type like facebook moms with mental issues, which a lot of the users are considering the pregnancy posts

(yes, somehow the site has pph comparable to the sharty)

As for the actual games on the site, I have no idea what they look like but it's evident that users take them seriously. People put long descriptions of their current in-game roles in their bios, where they also pretend to be doing srs bsns with their internet friends or something idk. Honestly I have no idea if this site is really that bad, maybe it's just filled with basic people and I'm reading it wrong

A brief timeline of the events leading up to this drama:

• On July 1st, /r/malefashionadvice (MFA) went private, becoming the largest private subreddit on the site (the only one with 5M+ subscribers). The mods and much of the active subreddit community moved to a discord server. A message from a mod with an explanation for going private can be found here.

• On July 13th, the MFA mods received and responded to a notice from the admins requesting that MFA be reopened within 3 days or the mods would be removed. On the same day, an article on The Verge was posted, describing the subreddit's migration to discord. The MFA mods make an announcement in the discord that they expect to be removed.

• On July 20th, reddit admins removed the mod team without responding to the modmail. Another Verge article describes the situation. Despite going into restricted mode, one user posted a link to the discord in the subreddit, which was not well received by some commenters.

This brings us to today, when Reddit admins put out a request for new MFA mods.

Most of the comments are not welcoming to the call for moderators:

• "Reddit kicked out the old mods for rebelling against Reddit's shitty behaviour. Reddit took the free labour which the existing mod team had provided for years, said "fuck you" to all of them, gave them the boot, and now wants fresh free labour to replace the old unpaid serfs. Gotta protect them shareholders."
• "I'd like to be a mod because I think Spez is a dishonest creep, as is everyone involved in the ModCodeofConduct account, and I pledge to do my very best to burn all your efforts to the ground. This community will not accept scab mods."
• "I've never moderated anything in my life and I dress like a toddler, please make me a mod I promise that I'll eat the boot and not just lick it, thanks in advance"

Some users responded to the call, but were met with criticism.

• "Id like to be a mod because I love mens fashion, and I love this community. As you can see by my comment history, I’ve been contributing here for nearly a year. This is such a valuable place for so many people and I’d be honored to be overseeing it"
• In response: "Only rats cross the line"

Some other goodies:

• ~~The MFA Wiki has a big link to the discord at the top.~~ (see update 1 below). The Wiki history page shows that the discord link was added to the Wiki, then removed by the admins, then re-added by the same user.

• The default comment sort for MFA is now controversial.

Update 1: admins have rolled back the Wiki by 3 years because of the discord link added.

Update 2: several comments that responded negatively to mod applications in the thread, such as the "only rats cross the line" comment linked above in this post, have been removed by admins.
