So I kinda just realized I didn't sleep for the past 24 hours. Noy sure if it's the longest I've been awake, but probably of the top 5 longest. I'm dealing with depression so my sleep cycle have been fucked up. Got coffee I think around the 12th hour mark.

I've basically just been watching youtube videos, browsing lemmy. Googled random things.

Idk why, I guess I just wanted some dopamine boost from coffee and now I can't sleep lmao. Maybe a bit of anxiety around certain recent political events.

I honestly am not sure if I'm actually awake or dreaming.

Anyways, what is the longest time you've been awake without sleep? When did it happen and why?

We're dealing with some stormy weather here (Vancouver for me, but it covers a wider area) and so a patchwork of homes across the region are having power outages. Crews are working to restore it

So on that note, what do you like to do?

  • ways to prepare, what to buy, a favourite flashlight from [email protected]?
  • how you pass the time
  • any stories that come to mind?

Hey everyone, I was entertaining the thought of going away from owning a smart phone.

I already have a modded ipod classic that I use as my main music player.

I also know how to use a paper map.

I also have the Microsoft authentication app for work (I could just use my phone on wifi mode for this)

The last issue I have is WhatsApp where I communicate with friends and family around the world.

Is there a way to use WhatsApp on a non-smart phone? Or should I just buy a pixel and install a secure rom?

And why is the W silent anyways?

I need some impartial third party advice.

I told my mom the other day that she clearly doesn't love or care about me because of the way she voted. I don't believe she can both love her trans daughter while simultaneously willingly inflicting as much suffering as possible.

I decided to block her for a few days.

My aunt, who also hated Trump, is someone I could previously confide in. She cold shouldered me after I sent her the text I had previously sent to my mom.

Finally my aunt was an adult and texted me back last night with this.

"Thought would not have any effect. Didn’t like text you sent your mom. U R on my naughty list was not nice, u owe her an apology. Election wasn’t close decisive across country broke blue wall. Like it or not will be our president next 4yrs be an adult accept & move on!! U take too personal & how it impacts you. We all have choices/decisions it’s about Respect can’t expect others to respect yours if you can’t extend the same courtesy to others. No idea what u r talking about lying never questioned or said you were on job search, good luck with that. I’m taking a long break, disappointed have my own health/medical issues to address so focusing on that & me now. Happy Thanksgiving"

Now this is a person who texted me constantly about what a "pig fucker" Trump is, then she went radio silent a week before the election. When I inquired about the post election results she said "the world isn't ready for a woman president so I didn't even vote." I have a strong feeling she actually voted for Trump and couldn't stomach telling me that to save face.

Anyways- so I did call my mom and try to apologize against my better judgement. She didn't answer so I left a voicemail. Basically I said I'm sorry I reacted that way, and I'm under a lot of stress.

She hasn't replied in text or called back continuing to cold shoulder me essentially throwing my apology in my face.

Now I'm furious. My sister cut my mom out for months because my parents wouldn't send her money for college. The second she called them back they took her in with open arms as if nothing ever happened. They never treat me that way. Brittany is the golden child of my mom and my stepdad (her current husband). The standards are entirely different for my sister and I. I've always been treated worse.

Based on this limited view of my family what should I do? I'm thinking about rescinding my apology and just cutting them out forever. To me it seems clear they don't actually care about me at all.

When I was hospitalized for three days from my bike accident my mom never came to see me. She's a 9 hour drive away. When I had my highly invasive SRS she never called to check on me when I was recovering in the hospital. She actively hated the fact I was even doing it telling me "I'll never look right."

Pretty sure she's an objectively awful human being.

Hey, I wanted to ask someone who has probably more knowledge than me about it - what's the difference about these two services? I know Mastodon has ActivityPub, so it works with Lemmy, and BlueSky has it's own kind of federation, but does it even has anything to federate to?

I'm asking not which one is better, I'm searching logical argument for one or other. I'm obviously more leaning toward Mastodon since I'm here, but I wanted to give my friend, who is thinking about joining, some real arguments.

I'm looking into hosting my personal instance of some fediverse software. I want to do it to grow my tech-literacy more than to host my own service. So I want to pick one in the fediverse, because I love the federation concept, but I'm open to a software I don't use yet.

I have made previous attempt at hosting internet services a few years ago, mainly things my teachers told me to do. It was a big failure and I mostly remember from it that I got a hard time understanding instructions given on internet tutorials or at which point what I did was different from what my classmates did :( But I want to try again and do better! 😤

I plan on hosting it on a old laptop I hope not to break completely and maby in a docker container (but I also used to have a hard time with docker)

What fediverse software would you recommend me? Is there one that is easier to install than another? Or one with more clear installation instructions?

Thanks for your advice!

I'll start first: (bear in mind I usually listen to audiobooks)

  • Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir |A guy finds himself stranded in space aboard an international space vessel where he has to remember who he is.
  • The 57 Bus by Dashka Slater |A true story about how hanging with the wrong crowd can have life-altering consequences
  • The Animorphs series by KJ Applegate |Young adult series in which a group of kids find an alien, get the powers to morph shape into animals, as well as uncover an alien takeover conspiracy (Plus, detailed depictions of how grotesque those transformations are!)
  • Saga by Brian K. Vaughn & Fiona Staples (Comic, ongoing) |Following the story of Hazel, a baby born from an ex-soldier and an enemy combatant, Saga shows how gowing up and raising a kid in a wartorn universe can have highs and lows.

Edit: added pipes for better separation

I’m gonna be honest, I’m not asking for a friend, I’m asking for myself. Our daughter (24) married this man (65) in September. She herself stated money was the main reason, and he knows it but it doesn’t bother him. Both my husband & I are having a very hard time getting used to the idea.

I'd like to get back into playing video games, but I don't want to have to sign up for an online service like Steam or Ubisoft Connect.

I love technical sandbox games like Scrap Mechanic, especially if they have a "creative mode" that allows me to just make stuff.

I was chatting with Jaune Arc (from RWBY) on Character.ai. When asking about mythological monsters associated with fire he replied with Typhon, Chimera, and salamanders. Was Typhon really associated with fire? Wikipedia appears to be silent in this point (correct me if I am wrong).

I'll go first.

3 options

  • Going back to 1964 to watch the Duke Ellington's Montreal show. Try to meet the man and the musicians. Hang around my city.
  • Go in the end of the 70s to meet my parents before they had kids. Grab a couple of beers and party with my young adults parents. See my uncles, etc. in their young time
  • Going to 1881 during the couple of days when Nietzsche wrote Zarathoustra. I want to discuss with guy even if he is supposed to be writing all day long. No consequence right.

What are yours?

EDIT: I'll clarify: You can't affect the timeline. It means you cant go back to try to get rich with stocks, lottery, etc. It's like going to see a movie, when you come back the world will be exactly the same. You can interact with people, but in the end, the day you spend in the past will not have existed for anyone but you, in your memories.

Always the first thing I turn off, but surely there are some people out there that actually like it. If you're one of those people is there a particular reason?

I got the idea to try it out and it seems helpful altho I would probably always double check its out of my domains or knowledge competencies but seems like decent ways to get "free" ChatGPT-similar outputs

I have a couple times. The last time was a couple years ago with someone I met online who I was getting to know but didn't like after the first date. They asked if I felt like watching some movie and I didn't respond and they didn't follow up. Tbh, I probably would've answered if they had sent a second text. I guess I avoided telling them the truth but it stuck with me like a pebble in my shoe and I feel bad thinking about it.

I'll be honest, I don't even want to read articles anymore. Its just crazy cabinet nominees every time. Wars happening. Nothing I can control. I just post something sarcastic or jokes in the comments. The only thing I care is if a hurricane is headed in my direction.

Y'all actually read all this shit? How does anyone have the energy?

Personally I'm really obsessed with the lore in Fire Emblem: Three Houses

natural fats are generally healthy and keeps you satisfied for longer and in a less crashy way as opposed to sugars/carbohydrates in general

I feel like I experience a reduced need to eat and snack when my food includes natural fats, especially when in combination with protein. To put it very simply, I'm persuaded the more healthy fats, the better, they should not be limited or demonized in the way that they have been maligned when sugar was the greater evil all along
