I brought up broccoli specifically because I recently wanted to know the nutrition facts of broccoli, and the initial google results were for 1 cup, and not 100g as is standard in I guess everywhere that uses metric. I have absolutely no idea how much broccoli that is, not only because I'm not used to it, but the dimensions of the cup and how finely chopped the broccoli is matter quite a lot in terms of how much actual broccoli we're talking about. It's just so ambiguous.

Perhaps that's because it's what you know best and are used to. Volumetric measurements of anything that doesn't have a fixed density make no sense to me. What the hell is one cup of broccoli? Even a cup of flour can have wildly different ammounts of flour. My least favorite though is butter, how the hell am I supposed to measure out 3 tablespoons of butter? Melt it all on the stove and pour out what I need? I find it incredibly unintuitive.

You have misunderstood what I wrote. I said nothing about an employee purchasing a flag, I said that they would not be permitted to raise one, as they are a resource that is paid for by the act.

I think it's "asinine and childish" to be so rude, especially when it's you that has made the mistake.

Right, but the public employee is being paid for by the funds that are covered by the act. Therefore if an employee raises the flag, funds are being used to display a non-state flag.

Edit: To be clear, I have not suggested that an employee of the state wouldn't be allowed to purchase a flag. The way I read the act, an employee would not be allowed to raise a flag because they themselves are a resource paid for by the act.

I would think that the "or display" part prohibits a public employee from raising the flag.

Thanks for the reply! I think I'm going to pull the trigger on the white one as well. Can't wait!

Which color did you get, and how do you like it? I'm really leaning towards this option.

Yeah I'm getting the sense that it'll be a good choice, I just think they're hideous.

Hi Lemmy,

I'm in the market for a new phone as my galaxy S10+ that I've had for ~5 years has a dying screen. I haven't really been paying attention to the market in the same number of years, so I"m not sure what to go for and I would really appreciate your recommendations!

Some info:

  • My budget is definitely no more than 700 EUR (preferably under 500, but I'm willing to make concessions)
  • I'm expecting to buy refurbished to save money, so the device need not be from this generation
  • I prioritize:
    • a high quality panel with high refresh rate, could be nice with LTPO
    • Hardware that is at least as capable as the S10+
    • All-day battery life
    • Preferably flat screen

I don't really care about the camera, I'm sure most these days are serviceable for the few pictures I take.

I'm very interested in the Nothing phone 2, but it's just at the edge of my price range so I'm trying to see if I can find something that scratches the same itch, both in specs and form factor (but I'm sure that's too much to ask). Any advice would be appreciated!

Will do, thanks!

What if I want to use my absolute freedom to oppress someone else? What if I use my absolute freedom to build a structure that blocks the view of the mountains from my neighbors, who love the view? Whose freedom should get oppressed to solve that?

Honest question, not trying to be a contrarian.

I think it's unfortunate that you're being so hostile. It was an interesting point and very good sources that you brought to the discussion. But you've decided to play the "you're all 'autists' " card.

Hey there!

I'm a chemical physicist who has been using python (as well as matlab and R) for a lot of different tasks over the last ~10 years, mostly for data analysis but also to automate certain tasks. I am almost completely self-taught, and though I have gotten help and tips from professors throughout the completion of my degrees, I have never really been educated in best practices when it comes to coding.

I have some friends who work as developers but have a similar academic background as I do, and through them I have become painfully aware of how bad my code is. When I write code, it simply needs to do the thing, conventions be damned. I do try to read up on the "right" way to do things, but the holes in my knowledge become pretty apparent pretty quickly.

For example, I have never written a class and I wouldn't know why or where to start (something to do with the init method, right?). I mostly just write functions and scripts that perform the tasks that I need, plus some work with jupyter notebooks from time to time. I only recently got started with git and uploading my projects to github, just as a way to try to teach myself the workflow.

So, I would like to learn to be better. Can anyone recommend good resources for learning programming, but perhaps that are aimed at people who already know a language? It'd be nice to find a guide that assumes you already know more than a beginner. Any help would be appreciated.

I noticed there was no physics-specific communities (at least that I could find) so I went ahead and made one! My idea is that it'll be a community for all people with an interest in physics to discuss, ask questions, and share knowledge. Come post stuff you find interesting!

Physics

I was inspired by someone's username and found this video. A video much like this one was one of the things that got me into studying physics to begin with over a decade ago.

The characteristic blue glow is caused by Cherenkov radiation, which is analogous to a sonic boom, but instead of a jet breaking the sound barrier, it's charged particles moving faster than the phase velocity of light in a medium (normally water).

Pretty cool, I think.

Not strictly physics related, but who's gunna stop me?

Let me preface this by saying I am not at all well versed in QM, but I've just recently finished a course that took us through most of Griffiths and I have some thoughts.

The thing that blows me away the most about QM isn't necessarily all the standard "weirdness", like tunneling and superposition and whatever, but rather that all of this weirdness can be accurately described by (mostly) pre-existing mathematics. Linear algebra was a growing, but already established field, and the concept of abstract linear vector spaces, and later Hilbert space, came just before and evolved alongside QM.

The fact that we discovered a mathematical language before finding out what that language could describe just blows my mind. I understand this isn't the first time the maths came before the physics, but considering how groundbreaking and unintuitive the theory is I think that fact is quite exceptional. Even more so is that we can use this mathematical formalism to derive physically observable phenomena. I don't know if you get what I mean, but wow. I think that's nuts haha

Hey there, loving the app! I've noticed that anytime I tap a blurred image to show it, my feed will jump down past the image, without showing it. If I scroll back up and tap again it will show and behavior returns to normal for that image. This happens once for each NSFW image on my feed.

I'm assuming this is a bug, or am I doing something weird?

Bonus question: is it possible to access your account settings via the app? I can't seem to find the option. Thanks!

Anyone else notice that you can still access reddit through rif if you're not logged in? I noticed after opening the app out of habit haha. You can even view NSFW content, so I'm not really sure what's going on.
