I've seen 2 brown snakes in my life and I went hiking near rocks and water in snake territory to see them. If you do not do this, you'll likely never see a snake. Spiders are a very low risk and are mostly just annoying. Tbh it's kangaroos near dusk while driving that are the biggest risk in my neighborhood.

I think he was a shitty husband? From memory he didn't cope well after one of his sons died in the civil war and took it out in his personal life. He was also horribly depressed. Not that mental health was something people even considered at that time, so it's not like seeing a therapist was on the cards.
