The books are absolutely worth the read. One of my favorite series ever. Also, the only series that I felt lied to as a reader. What I mean by that is that I was hinted towards certain theories, but got tricked by the author. Not that he did lie, but the twists and real truth were very unexpected. I absolutely loved it.

This is spoiler-ish, but the sequel books follow another main character as well. Kinda switching between two viewpoints. So i assume the show will do the same. There are some changes from the books to TV but the author was very involved with the show and agreed with all the changes. He did an AMA on reddit before episode 1 aired. I'm very happy with this adaptation.

One of their slogans used to be "don't be evil"

Obviously they dropped that a while back.

I wish I had an answer to that. For me, it's knowledge and recognition. Having an open mind to hear both sides of an argument and trying to focus on facts, not "what ifs". Then paying attention to not just what's being said, but how it's being said. It's pretty easy to see when someone is trying to get you emotional rather than logical, but you have to be looking for it.

When I hear a politician say "they're trying to take away...." or "they want you to...". That's them trying to make you fear the other side. I don't give a shit if you're left, right, capitalist, communist, or a dictator, if you're goal is to make me fear what the other side will do with power then you've already lost me. Because I know, that really you're afraid to lose power and so you make other people afraid too. Unfortunately, it works for way too many people.

Eradicate fear.

Fear of losing power. Fear of "them". Fear of going to hell because you didn't convert someone. Fear of lost resources.

It all boils down to fear. The problem is that fear is contagious. It's easier to convince someone to back your side if you make them afraid vs hopeful.

Make it super easy to download images.

I have a group chat with friends that's just memes. So the easier to share, the better.

Yeah. I understand the trend. It makes sense. It's not unreasonable.

I still hate it. I have a nice home theater and my wife STILL trys to turn on subtitles. For me, I can't not read them. Even in English with a good sound system. My brain just focuses on subtitles anyway. Movies and TV are a visual medium. I want to watch the movie. I want to see the color choices, the framing of the characters, the cool CGI. With subtitles, I only SEE half the movie. I have less time to process each seen.

So yeah, same. If I wanted to read, I'd read a book.

Am I the only one here that uses Falkon. I love Firefox and everything they stand for. But I do like having my desktop windows match. Since I use Plasma, Firefox just doesn't match.

Really? I loved the first book, but felt the translator for the second had a different enough style that it was hard for me to stay engaged. Maybe I'll have to give it a second try

Easy.

The ability to make and manipulate portals. You can travel anywhere nearly instantly. My version of this power assumes you can make the exit portal without physically seeing it. So you could make one at home, one at your work and never deal with traffic. Want to go to London for the weekend? Done.

The cool thing is that you could also bring things to you. Craving a soda? Pop one portal under the coke in your fridge and the other just above your hand. Boom! Gravity pulls the coke through the portal and drops it into your hand. So now you can summon items to you as well.

My version also includes manipulation of your portals. You placed them but can move them while they are active. This allows you to effectively "scan" things. Need to dig a trench? Keep one portal stationary and just pull the other through the dirt. Whatever you scan gets immediately teleported elsewhere.

If we are assuming a world in which superheroes are a thing, you become an absolute badass. Not God like. But you can't be arrested because you'll just leave. You can easily make "rods from God" a reality. You could "scan" a spear fast enough that it's like shooting it from a cannon and impale your enemies. You can use your portals as perfect shields. All attacks would just be directed elsewhere.

I think about this power a lot. To be honest, It's based on Gilgamesh's powers from the Fate anime.

It sure would be nice if some of these rich and "powerful" people using these drugs would advocate support for the legalization. look at the analyses, maybe they're funding through some of the supporters, but not directly.

I guess it's rules for thee not for me
