Pokemon meets Pulp Fiction

[–] [email protected] 13 points 8 months ago

I struggled so hard to see how this could possibly be the description someone came up with, and then i realized its just "violent" and "anime"

Marcellus used Pair of Pliers & Blowtorch. It's super fucking effective!

Vegeta gets his head blown off in the backseat

When this was written, the main version of Dragon Ball Z Americans were familiar with was the Ocean Dub, which was flanderized to the point where nobody ever said the words "die" or "kill", instead referring to it as "getting sent to another dimension".

It had the best opening theme, though.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 8 months ago (2 children)

Yu-Gi-Oh did the same thing during that era, but said "sent to the shadow realm" lol

[–] [email protected] 7 points 8 months ago (1 children)

I love the part when they were clearly in a trap from the Saw franchise but because the sawblades were purple suddenly it was fine for kids.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 8 months ago

Do you want to play a (shadow) game?

[–] [email protected] 6 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Wait, wait; what did they really say?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 8 months ago

There's a list on this wiki page but it's mostly used as a euphemism for dying/being killed.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 8 months ago (2 children)

For what it's worth, it was still fun to watch.

Even all the way back in the Dragon Ball days, Mystical Adventure was a complete banger that's unironically in my workout playlist.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 8 months ago

Damn that was a banger. I've only ever seen the original Dragon Ball through a torrent which replaces all of the music with the original Japanese tracks, so I've never heard it until now.

I'm glad DBZ Kai exists, but all my nostalgia is for the Ocean and Funimation eras. I just really love their synth-heavy atmospheric soundtracks, and then when Faulconer came on board and added guitars to the mix it was perfect. The music is probably the biggest reason why I never clicked with DB Super, come to think of it.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 8 months ago

Whoa, never heard the English version before. So interesting that they actually re-recorded the entire song rather than using the original instrumental. Maybe it was worth it to avoid the licensing costs? Might also just be that the fledgling anime dub industry didn't get that kind of access. Come to think of it, Sailor Moon's DiC dub also re-recored the OP (original for comparison).

Grug simple man. Grug see Dragon Ball talk. Grug join

Also, Dragon Ball was never more violent than what? Harry Potter or Star Wars? Yet my uncle is a massive Star Wars fan and introduced my cousin to it when she was 5.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 8 months ago

So much wanton murder in Star Wars.

DragonBall Z was violent trash that shouldn't have been shown to kids. I was in 2nd grade when it was new and it for sure was the next power rangers in making kids want to fight literally all the time. It's also just a really shitty show, it's literally people standing around yelling about how they're going to fight but every arc the new guy is harder to fight. It's fucking dreck.

[–] [email protected] 24 points 8 months ago (1 children)

making kids want to fight literally all the time

That's literally all kids.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 8 months ago (3 children)

I know that Playing Power Rangers or Playing Dragon Ball Z just meant fighting. I.tjink children shouldn't watch a show that is literally just about fighting. That's the entire focus of DBZ, every character's motive is based around being better at fighting. At least other shitty kids action shows had the veil of having the protagonists 'really not want to fight but have to!'. The main character's goal in dbz is to be the strongest fighter and fight stronger people. Kids shows shouldn't be entirely focused around fighting

[–] [email protected] 19 points 8 months ago

Lol we gonna ban video games next

[–] [email protected] 13 points 8 months ago

Street Sharks made me want to chew asphalt and beat the shit out of piranhas.

[–] discostjohn 3 points 8 months ago

You're wrong. Some of the characters are certainly fighting enthusiasts, but Goku and crew are usually fighting to save the world, not just to get better at fighting.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 8 months ago (1 children)

yeah but as fight shows with nothing else going on go it's a good one. nice to hang out with piccolo and vegeta and the crew

[–] [email protected] 6 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

Kids shouldn't watch fight shows with nothing else going on tho. And I really liked non Z Dragon Ball, that shit was fun. And it's not like I'm full anti violence in kids shows, inthink Digimon was cool and good for me to have watched around the same time and would encourage kids to watch it and have watched it with friend's kids. But DragonBall Z is all about fight, at least other fight shows the protagonists are reluctant to be fight and has a surface level violence bad, Goku's only goal is to fight stronger people

[–] [email protected] 13 points 8 months ago

Kids love violent trash

[–] [email protected] 10 points 8 months ago (3 children)

it actually had really deep characters and complex themes

[–] [email protected] 9 points 8 months ago

Ehh it's good but I wouldn't go that far lol

Closest thing to that would be Gohan during the Cell arc, and even that was done way better by TFS in the Abridged version.

some people just don't get it I guess

[–] [email protected] 7 points 8 months ago

I've given it 3 chances at ages 8, 16 and 28. I really don't see where you're coming from. I am also very familiar with non Z DragonBall, saw that as an even younger kid and enjoyed that one on rewatch

Its weird because the main character was as simple as it gets but the complex characters were the supporting cast, like Vegeta.

Flashback to middle school where the vice-principal accused me of Satanism for playing yugioh

"Pika Pika ONE MORE TIME!"

[–] [email protected] 5 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

Dbz is not a particularly deep anime but it had some good themes in it like self-improvement, helping others and kicking fascists asses. Reducing it to just violence is just dumb analysis.

Fun story: thanks to AI, some dudes have recreated dbz openings/endings with the voice of Luis Miguel, one of the best mexican singers. It's fire.
