I got ChatGPT to write me a silly dialogue ending in this line:

Samantha: "Arthur, how could you?"

Arthur: "What? What did I do this time, Samantha?"

Samantha: "You've put mayonnaise on the roast chicken again! You know I can't stand the stuff!"

Arthur: "But, Samantha, it adds so much flavor!"

Samantha: "Arthur, it doesn't. It just makes everything taste like... mayonnaise!"

Arthur: "That's the point! You know I've always loved it."

Samantha: "I thought you loved me."

Arthur: "Well, of course, I do."

Samantha: "Well, you can't have both of us."

Arthur: "What, you want me to choose between you and mayonnaise?"

Samantha: "Yes, exactly. Do you love mayonnaise or do you love me?"

If I ever go to Germany, I now have an awesome pickup line.

[–] [email protected] 27 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Be prepared for a lot of Germans to pick mayo

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago (1 children)

That's when you produce a jar of mayo from behind your back.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Honest to god I think this would actually work

[–] [email protected] 25 points 1 year ago

If you're understanding strictly because of context, how are you supposed to learn the language well. You need to be exposed to absurdity in order to really get it

[–] [email protected] 18 points 1 year ago (1 children)

You don't know how much Germans love mayo, then.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (3 children)

Germans? not as much, Slaves? damn, they would end the world for one more spoonful of mayo

[–] [email protected] 18 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

Slaves

Err...did you mean to type "Slavs?"

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago (1 children)

autocorrect XD, that one time you don't check, but ima keep it, it's funny

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Those damn slaves and their... checks notes ... lust for mayo?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

We Dutch need all the mayo. Where are you hiding the mayo?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

So what's this 'hollandaise' then? What are you hiding from us?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

we sold it, you'll need to go (to) Hungry

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Pommes mit Mayo? Spinnst du?

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 year ago

The point isn't to teach you useful sentences to memorize, it's teaching you spontaneous usage of the language. With German, it's definitely drilling all of the specific tense rules into you by throwing random ass sentences at you to translate.

Jesse doesn't truly understand the German language or people until this question makes sense.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 year ago

'Liebst du Mayo oder liebst du mich? Scheiß egal, ich hab die Gicht!'

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago

Hell of an ultimatum

Such an underrated comment

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

I like how the first section of German Duolingo is learning how to ask for coffee and beer or tea and wine

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Seems pretty normal to me 😹

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I'm german and this phrase is utterly bs. Tbh, every German You will tell this will treat You like you're a retard.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 year ago

fr... I am german, of course I love mayonnaise

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 year ago (2 children)

What would be the proper phrasing for this question?

[–] [email protected] 19 points 1 year ago (1 children)

It’s grammatically correct but every sane German will obviously pick mayo.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

that's sort of the point, you aren't learning phrases to spit out like a "Chinese room", but instead vocabulary and grammar

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

E.g.: Was liebst du mehr, Mayonnaise oder mich?

What do You like better, Mayonnaise or me?

The point is, it's highly improper to not love a person in favor of a thing. Instead You can lighten it up a bit by just asking for what they like better.

The initial question is only askable among very close friends (Irony/Saracasm), usually not even for couples and definitely not for love interests or lose contacts.

If you're Doug Funny this could be legit.

It's better to study language from natural sources, yes you can use dullingo or textbooks but learn about natural language from natural sources by immersing yourself in the content of the language you are learning
