It is also reported that the pilot died

That's maybe the best part. The list of people willing to fly over Ukrainian territory must be getting pretty short.

About to get an influx of N. Korean pilots.

They'll have to bring their own biplanes.

MiG-15s will be flying over the Dniepr once again. Not for long, but they'll be flying.

They can't afford to buy them, but I'm sure that sheet of metal from the outhouse roof might come in handy

Sounds like it's turning into a "two birds with one stone" situation.

Russian air defense seems really good at shooting down Russians.

Have to wonder if this was one of those cases like the Heli pilot that defected (after killing his entire crew) and handed the heli over to Ukraine in return for asylum.

Or if it's just Russia being Russia and doing stupid shit out of sheer incompetence.

(after killing his entire crew)

This article says Ukrainian forces killed the crew after they refused to surrender.

And this article says the same thing. Crew freaked out when they realized they landed in Ukraine, ran and refused to surrender.

Are you talking about a different heli pilot that defected?

I also agree that this story is true, and salute the safe families of the brave crew members.

117 more to go.

Help me, pilot! I no longer know where I am not!
[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 year ago

If you don't know where you aren't, you can't determine where you are. It'll be especially difficult to obtain a difference or 'deviation' so you won't get any corrective commands to drive you from where you are to where you are not...

the clown show continues

I wonder if something like the Friendly or Foe system being broken or in the wrong setting could cause this. I think there was in incident in the middle east where an RAF Tornado was shot down by British anti-air systems as it couldn't identify the aircraft as friendly.

Having trained in Deus Ex and, most recently, Starfield, this sounds very plausible.

The multi-million dollar jet? Easily replaceable with money. The pilot? That's a hit.

You don't just trust anyone to fly that jet, you get your best and brightest, your most loyal, the most decorated pilot to fly that plane.

In Pokemon terms, you just watched another country permanently delete a shiny Charizard to its own confusion.

Edit: Thank you @Akareth!

I actually doubt currently they can replace that jet easily, or perhaps at all? Seems like just finding parts to keep their modern equipment alive has become hard for them.

Way to use an audience relevant metaphor.

The pilot? That’s a hit.

Yup. Russia has a huge problem with not having enough experienced pilots, so a dead pilot is a huge loss for them.

Although I don't really know how much of a difference one pilot makes, considering that the VVS is an abject joke and likely not capable of any sort of "real" air operations (and I'm not alone in thinking this).

TIL... hardpoint is an attachment location on a structural frame designed to transfer force and carry an external or internal load. The term is usually used to refer to the mounting points (more formally known as a weapon station or station) on the airframe of military aircraft that carry weapons
