In short:

Indonesia's government has signalled a shift in its approach to some drug laws, in part to address overcrowding in jails.

A senior minister told reporters that drug users would be sent to rehabilitation instead of prison.

What's next?

Legal experts warn the move will just relocate drug users from prisons to rehab facilities.

Relocating drug users from prisons to rehab facilities will relocate drug users from prisons to rehab facilities? Tell me more, oh those so wise in the ways of law.

Facilities that specialize in providing the support and care they need! It’s amazing, what a stroke of genius!

One step at a time. Maybe once the rehab centers fill, they'll realise that legalisation and certified selling points will be better. But one step at a time.

The existing code was inherited from the Dutch East Indies colonial government.

Ah, the colonisers again...

Don't get your hope up, the most they(and we asian in general) will do is to decriminalise drug abuse, which imo is significantly a step forward.

Also let's not forget that legalising marijuana is still a very new concept, and researcher is still ongoing about the prolonged use of the drug. And "drug use" isn't exclusive to marijuana, there's lots and lots of hard drug that shouldn't be use recreationally.

Knowing the general attitude that Asian countries have towards drug policy I would have thought their first idea to alleviate overcrowding of drug offenders in prisons would be to hang all concerned.

My sir, asia is very big, and two, death sentence is usually only given to drug mule, three, things are getting better in many country in asia so the only reality that comment reflect in is a racist one.
