Based on the content of the linked post and the evolution of the thread here, the mod team has decided to lock this post. There is an important difference between standing up for people who are marginalized and harassment, which this thread has been more or less equating. Please deal with this topic in a more nuanced manner going forward.
Technology
A nice place to discuss rumors, happenings, innovations, and challenges in the technology sphere. We also welcome discussions on the intersections of technology and society. If it’s technological news or discussion of technology, it probably belongs here.
Remember the overriding ethos on Beehaw: Be(e) Nice. Each user you encounter here is a person, and should be treated with kindness (even if they’re wrong, or use a Linux distro you don’t like). Personal attacks will not be tolerated.

It was so simple, just approve the merge. Oh well.
additional transphobia https://github.com/SerenityOS/serenity/pull/8046#issuecomment-860350155
They're saying that the proposed gender change (in the docs) will most likely not be accepted. That's still bullshit, but to insinuate transphobia based on this comment alone goes too far IMHO.
It's definitely sexist.
For better takes than OP on the whole situation
Was the reason for rejecting the pull stupid? Yes. Is this dogpiling 3 years later stupid? Also yes. And like the comments I linked above stated, this is giving a lot of fuel for people to defend awesomekling, "look at all the drama they're making over ONE noun in ONE file referring to an anonymous user!"
Right now, my fear is that attention and effort that could go to actual development will be hijacked by this whole drama. I just hope this nonsense doesn't last long.
Yes, sink a valuable Free software because they won't accept something you and I believe in.
It's incredibly selfish and stupid.
In OSS, we don't have obligations to make software available to everyone. I could make a project with only documentation written in French and not include any people that don't speak French. And that's fine.
But when someone comes and says "hey I've translated the docs to english", you don't fire a "stop pushing your political anglicisation" in their face. It shows that you hold a grudge against anglicisation or people speaking english in general.
A more appropriate response would be "Thanks, but no, it was not a mistake, I prefer it the way it was".
This kind of artificial drama feels so astroturf-ish to me.
As soon as the project was publicized people have been angry at the use of C++ and now, a few hours later, people admit to creating github account for the sole purpose of dogpiling on the project. Either people really hate Foss devs or someone dont want this project to be a success.
Ah the two genders, male and political
As an able-bodied neurotypical 30-something straight white cis male with a suburban middle class upbringing and an office job, I don’t participate in identity politics.
I've had a conservative say essentially that to me but with a straight face. He was also convinced that white, cishet meat eater men are the most oppressed minority (literally what he said).
Parodying conservative opinions is completely impossible nowadays; any quip anybody can come up with will be an actual conservative opinion, pretty much no matter how ridiculously stupid it is.
My sibling's delightful ex-roommate--a conservative, 20something, middle-class, cishet white man--said that he feels very oppressed in their college town! He's always scared of saying what he thinks bc then everyone will think of him badly! Literally the most oppressed! (His actual words)
What gender is the wheel user?
Wheel never know!
Why are people so intense about some generic instructions in documentation, to the point where they start dogpiling? It doesn't help the cause at all nor won't it convince anybody.
For me, it's the response that's yikes, not them initially putting that language in. Initially putting the language in could just be thoughtless, but when they make the intentional choice to keep it in and use that justification, it shows where they stand. And it's a very yikes stance.
Initially putting the language in could just be thoughtless, but when they make the intentional choice to keep it...
I think it's not the same person.
The one who made that response is the lead dev of SerenityOS and presumably Ladybird as well, since he's the one who announced it.
Even if he didn't put that language in, he made the call that that language being in there was not political, but fixing it to be gender-neutral would be political.
New Brendan Eich just dropped
Because the repo admin declined a PR where one he
was replaced with they
? That's such a nonsense, stop generating drama out of nothing.
Spinning a PR that changes "he" to "they" into tired culture war BS is the real nonsense here. Improving inclusivity only becomes political when contrarian types throw a fit and make it that way.
Meh, you still drink coffee, yes?
What does coffee have to do with anything?
Wow I can't believe the tech bro that insists on using only Twitter + Discord for his app is a total douche.
Better not use cars or computers either, if you're basing your entire life around whether or not an invention's creator believes the same things as you.
normally i don't argue with randos on the internet but i typed this up elsewhere and figured it could fit here, not for your sake, but for the benefit of other users, so...
do the people who're saying shit like "well do you not drive cars either because the auto industry is unethical" seriously not realize that contributing to free and open source software is involving yourself in a COMMUNITY? like that i'm warning people to steer clear of a shitty social space that's been known to be hostile to our kind in the past??? i'm not just doing this for ragebait engagement farming lmao
Yes because it's literally impossible to not use some services or products because you don't want to support their makers, because for some reason that means you can't use anything else either.
I've got a sneaking suspicion you just don't like people disagreeing with views that you share
It's now changed to more gender neutral language. You should check it before referencing 3 years old PR
The gender neutral change happened 13h, there was a commit that changed the desired "he" to a "it", which was after this whole thing blew up, since the new influx of comments on the pull request is "20h ago"
I doubt that'll stop the continuous influx of hate
If you admit it's a minor nitpick then you should be expecting to get rejected. Dev effort is better spent on real features than merging those whilespace PRs.
It would've taken less time to merge this than the original comment denying it took to write.
And then everyone will make those whitespace PRs because they want to say they have contributed in XYZ big name projects in their CVs. I don't see why we should encourage those people.
If you genuinely find a white space problem in a project go ahead and submit a patch, by all means. Let the other devs focus on more pressing problems.
Let's agree to disagree
Having devs outside of the project submit fixes for minor issues that don't require intimate knowledge of the project itself is spending dev effort better than having the project devs themselves have to do it.
Having people really outside of the project to commit to the repo is a bad idea to begin with. If you don't plan to contribute by code then just don't contribute at all.
They aren't commiting to the project, they're submitting pull requests. Totally different.
Ya. I mean their commits shouldn't be merged to the repo. They can of course commit whatever they want to their own fork.
Tl;dr?
Mastodon user posts about rejected change suggestion to neutral pronouns. Many critical comments get posted on the old rejected PR (arguably harassment, certainly not productive). Someone else creates a PR to fix grammar mistakes, including pronouns, it gets merged.
