Rules

1. Be niceDo not make personal attacks against each other, call for violence against anyone, or intentionally antagonize people in the comment sections.

2. Explain incorrect defense articles and takes

If you want to post a non-credible take, it must be from a "credible" source (news article, politician, or military leader) and must have a comment laying out exactly why it's non-credible. Low-hanging fruit such as random Twitter and YouTube comments belong in the Matrix chat.

3. Content must be relevant

Posts must be about military hardware or international security/defense. This is not the page to fawn over Youtube personalities, simp over political leaders, or discuss other areas of international policy.

4. No racism / hatespeech

No slurs. No advocating for the killing of people or insulting them based on physical, religious, or ideological traits.

5. No politics

We don't care if you're Republican, Democrat, Socialist, Stalinist, Baathist, or some other hot mess. Leave it at the door. This applies to comments as well.

6. No seriousposting

We don't want your uncut war footage, fundraisers, credible news articles, or other such things. The world is already serious enough as it is.

7. No classified material

Classified ‘western’ information is off limits regardless of how "open source" and "easy to find" it is.

8. Source artwork

If you use somebody's art in your post or as your post, the OP must provide a direct link to the art's source in the comment section, or a good reason why this was not possible (such as the artist deleting their account). The source should be a place that the artist themselves uploaded the art. A booru is not a source. A watermark is not a source.

9. No low-effort posts

No egregiously low effort posts. E.g. screenshots, recent reposts, simple reaction & template memes, and images with the punchline in the title. Put these in weekly Matrix chat instead.

10. Don't get us banned

No brigading or harassing other communities. Do not post memes with a "haha people that I hate died… haha" punchline or violating the sh.itjust.works rules (below). This includes content illegal in Canada.

11. No misinformation

NCD exists to make fun of misinformation, not to spread it. Make outlandish claims, but if your take doesn’t show signs of satire or exaggeration it will be removed. Misleading content may result in a ban. Regardless of source, don’t post obvious propaganda or fake news. Double-check facts and don't be an idiot.

you had me at "emotional support fish"

I lost it at 'buoyancy makes shells easier to move around'

No they can't, that would be emotionally devastating.

Use gasoline instead of water. Then you can eliminate the fuel tank. Side bonus would be protection from microbes for the crew. The government should also expect a reduction in pension and social security costs.

  • also a bigger flex on the locals dying of dehydration.
[–] [email protected] 22 points 6 months ago

Great point!

Ask the crew of the CSS Hunley what water and shockwaves does to human bodies.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Yeah, I would rather not ask either.

Don't ask what all that weight does to the running surfaces either. Some things it's better to just not know.

[–] [email protected] 25 points 6 months ago

A modern tank is already about 70 metric tons, 3 or 4 more wont matter that much.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 6 months ago

Yeah that sounds kinda boring. What’s the worst that could happen

[–] [email protected] 11 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago) (2 children)

There (shouldn't) be any blast from the gun firing released inside the tank itself. So, you've got vibration that'll pass through the water. It might increase that, but that's not direct exposure to the blast.

There's still air around the muzzle. Maybe water makes up some of the distance, but there is still a buffer of compressable air in there.

I'm not sure that it wouldn't cause problems, but I'm not sure that it wouldn't, either. I don't think that it'd just be the "depth charge near people in the water" issue.

EDIT: Though some artillery has that recoil-compensating mechanism where the breach moves back when the gun fires. I dunno whether that's true of the main gun on an MBT, but if so, that might cause issues.

googles

Yeah, here's an Abrams doing it. That might suck.

Water transmits shockwaves to meat bags far more efficiently than air. Everyone’s lungs will be shredded if the tank is hit by an RPG.

I mean just put a pop-up valve at the top lol.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 6 months ago

Does anyone have a confederate ouija board?

[–] [email protected] 42 points 6 months ago (7 children)

I know this is non credible defense, but I would absolutely LOVE a breakdown of all the ways this is a terrible idea

[–] [email protected] 26 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago) (3 children)

It might unironically be a good idea except for the increased weight. Also shockwaves from impacts.

[–] [email protected] 33 points 6 months ago

Yeh the shockwaves would just transition perfectly into the crews bodies and turn them into paste.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 6 months ago (1 children)

My first thought is the crew would be cooked alive

[–] [email protected] 22 points 6 months ago (4 children)

Yeah I thought so too. Besides that, Oxygen running out would be a problem, and perhaps reliability of diving equipment.

And every operator would need a full one diving suit too, increasing production and maintenance cost.

Perhaps the tank would rust?

More fuel needed.

Electronics would need to be waterproof, otherwise they short circuit, breaking and perhaps harmin the crew.

The first issue that comes to mind is the noncompressible nature of water. If you've ever played in a pool and marveled at how clearly you can hear a digital watch beep all the way from the other end, you can scale this up for any pressure wave. With very unpleasant results.

In the desert, bees swarm water.

If out of supplies, the tactical emotional support fish can be eaten as well

[–] [email protected] 22 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago) (1 children)

Explosions will fuck you up harder underwater though won't they? Or is that when the explosion happens underwater? I feel like there was a MythBusters episode on this

[–] [email protected] 20 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago) (1 children)

should have written "can piss while operating tank" at the end

[–] [email protected] 25 points 6 months ago (1 children)

who said that you can't on a regular tank?

Wouldn't hydrostatic shock be a serious problem?

[–] [email protected] 27 points 6 months ago

Only briefly.

[–] [email protected] 22 points 6 months ago

You can't get shocked because tanks are grounded

[–] [email protected] 9 points 6 months ago

Not really, there is a pop-up valve on top and there is compressable air inside as well.

  • Probably eliminates a lot of the problems with making a tank amphibious.

They should add water to submarines too

[–] [email protected] 14 points 6 months ago (19 children)

That water would boil real fast

Wouldn't the water also insulate heat inside the cabin?

[–] [email protected] 8 points 6 months ago (2 children)

Yes water cooling works because water conducts heat better than air

armor cookoff is one of the bastardized terms of all time.

This hearkens to the reason they're called tanks in the first place.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 6 months ago (1 children)

If we were playing War Thunder, this would be "CREW KNOCKED OUT" just waiting to happen.
