Rules: (interactive)
1) Be nice and; have fun
Doxxing, trolling, sealioning, racism, and toxicity are not welcomed in AskLemmy. Remember what your mother said: if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all. In addition, the site-wide Lemmy.world terms of service also apply here. Please familiarize yourself with them
2) All posts must end with a '?'
This is sort of like Jeopardy. Please phrase all post titles in the form of a proper question ending with ?
3) No spam
Please do not flood the community with nonsense. Actual suspected spammers will be banned on site. No astroturfing.
4) NSFW is okay, within reason
Just remember to tag posts with either a content warning or a [NSFW] tag. Overtly sexual posts are not allowed, please direct them to either [email protected] or [email protected].
NSFW comments should be restricted to posts tagged [NSFW].
5) This is not a support community.
It is not a place for 'how do I?', type questions.
If you have any questions regarding the site itself or would like to report a community, please direct them to Lemmy.world Support or email [email protected]. For other questions check our partnered communities list, or use the search function.
Reminder: The terms of service apply here too.

The term AMA is technically copyrighted. Nobody here really cares much though, except maybe the admins that have their hardware in countries where they're vulnerable to being sued for hosting copyright infringing stuff.
They get to care for us.
"Ask me anything" as a specific logo typeface is trademarked; but the term is too generic to be copyrighted.
So can we safely do it or put CMV: For ChangeMyView entries?
Yep. No problems as of yet.
You technically could, though there are burrows (the Lemmy term for communities) that are better for it, since this one is more for questions.
Remember that if a burrow doesn't exist that's to your liking, you could always make one (and I might join).
Ive been on Lemmy for awhile and you are the first person I've seen refer to a Lemmy community as a burrow - where did you get the term from?
I tried to search engine it but they still don't seem to like indexing lemmy.
People on Lemmy are referred to as Lemmings, named after the animal, which makes its homes in burrows. One day someone asked what the equivalent here for "subreddit" was and burrows were mentioned and everyone was like "yeah let's do that"... I still have the reply chain link that shows all that, though the post itself is removed, so on my end that exchange doesn't show up anymore.
c/changemyview IS the Lemmy burrow
Edit:
Edit: u can join me in my private
burrow
anytime ;)Oh... misinterpreted that as just a part of the example, my bad.
Feel free to join me in my private
burrow
anytime ;)I'd love to. Which one is it?
I was being saucy, I don't run any private instances aha. Feel free to bookmark me however you like or DMs tho ;)
Edit: what does your username mean?
It's a convoluted anime reference. Shinigami are the Japanese equivalent to reapers and commonly feature in Shintoism which finds its way into anime. "Ookami" and "Ryuu" are anime characters associated with shinigami. I forgot the whole story of my username, but I know I was attempting to copy over from DeviantArt which is a site I use too.
Ah k, thanks for that. I dont know anything about anime unfortunately, was more into adult swim ;)
What, really? I actually didn't know this. By who though?
Follow up question: What if my initials are AMA?
Thats an interesting twist 😹
By Redit...?
I mean I know it's associated with Reddit, but I didn't know it was trademarked by them.
Who else could that be relevant for, thats where it was implemented first, isn't it?
Yes, but what I mean is I didn't expect Reddit to go full Hollywood on the term. It would be like Lemmy gatekeeping the term Lemming. So I then wondered if maybe someone else seized that opportunity.
Do we have everything like reserved or copyrighted in a way that some asshole can't take it away forever?
Edit: you're giving Redit way too much cRedit if you don't think they wouldn't swoop in 5sec after reading this post
If nobody has swooped in yet, they probably won't. At the moment, "AMA" seems like it has kleenex status.
Thats not the point, I want to make aure I don't spend time on something Redit can use against us or influence. I don't like when things CAN be taken away from me. Thats why everybody relies on contracts to maximize certainty in the future
I cannot speak for anyone aside from myself, but I would be confident betting on the fact Reddit won't weaponize if we do as you were asking. I myself enjoy these liberties frequently. I am the world record holder for the most sites having been signed up for (a strange world record some might say, but hey, a landmark is a landmark) and I've never come across a place where people complained about acronyms.
Thats neat, Im a bit tired but I'll read thru it when I'm feeling a bit better :)
I feel like we'll be just fine, have a good night
I don't like others having the power to put a pin it it for me. Its more important to me that someone can't influence my choices than whether they would, does that make sense? Buy the land before you build the cottage, don't be improvisitory on this thing
Yes, that makes sense. And relatable in a way.
That was adorable when you described yourself :) made my day
Can someone page a Lemmy.world admin to clarify?
