Fediverse

I visit this site probably more than I should, and when I browse, then come back a bit later to browse again, I'm seeing a LOT of repeat content.

The one and only feature I miss from that other site was being able to browse by reading a thread title to assess if its something I want to click on, if no hit 'H' to hide it, and it's gone; next one bumps up, and repeat.

So I'd skim by pressing H... H... H... H... "Ooh that one looks cool!" read the article, comment w/e, H... H... H... H... then I'd pop back in an hour later, and those threads would still be gone.

Unsure if that was a built-in feature or part of the RES thing. ...is there an RES -or- 'LES' for Lemmy?

So, I was thinking that I joined Lemmy.World because Lemmy had more users than MBin. But today I was looking at https://mbin.cocopoops.com/ and started seeing MY posts. I knew Mbin could have different instances. I knew Lemmy could have different instances. And I knew they all federated together.

But I didn't know Mbin could federate with Lemmy. But I'm sure Lemmy/Mbin probably won't federate with Pixelfed, or Peertube.

Mbin, piefed, and Lemmy are essentially reddit replacements. So they should be in a circle. It doesn't matter how many users Mbin has, or piefed has, or Lemmy has. It matters how many the full circle of federated reddit replacements have. Because thats the true circle of users that you can interact with.

So what we need is a website that you enter an instance, and it tells you how big your circle would be on that platform, and a list of federated, and defederated instances with it.

So Lemmy.World would have a pretty high circle. While hexbear would have only itself, if I understand right.

From a practical sense, ActivityPub may be the obvious choice as it gives easier interop with the largest federated platforms.

But what else? There are existing platforms built on these protocols, such as movim for xmpp, and another for matrix I forget.

From a technical standpoint, are there any major pros and cons?

Lemmy developers have said there are no near plans for allowing users to follow mastodon or other activityPub networks, so I'm considering another platform that can do this.

It looks like mbin, Piefed and FediLab have the ability to do this. Has anyone tried them and have a comparison?

I also heard it may be possible to do from just mastodon-like platforms. Anyone tried this?

Abstract

This paper examines the potential of the Fediverse, a federated network of social media and content platforms, to counter the centralization and dominance of commercial platforms on the social Web. We gather evidence from the technology powering the Fediverse (especially the ActivityPub protocol), current statistical data regarding Fediverse user distribution over instances, and the status of two older, similar, decentralized technologies: e-mail and the Web. Our findings suggest that Fediverse will face significant challenges in fulfilling its decentralization promises, potentially hindering its ability to positively impact the social Web on a large scale.

Some challenges mentioned in the paper:

• Discoverability as there is no central or unified index
• Complicated moderation efforts due to its decentralized nature
• Interoperability between instances of different types (e.g., Lemmy and Funkwhale)
• Concentration on a small number of large instances
• The risk of commercial capture by Big Tech

What are your thoughts on this? And how could we make the Fediverse a better place for all to stay?

Hello everyone. Just trying out piefed here in the fediverse. I’m looking for great examples of piefed feeds that work well in mastodon. Would love any recommendations you have.

I know they're quite different technically. But practically, what does ActivityPub unlock that was not previously possible with RSS and basic web tech stack?

I think I have an idea of the answer. RSS may provide a way for users to "subscribe" to content from a feed, equivalent of following and putting it in a unified feed.

But it does not have a way for users to interact with the poster, like comments or likes. This may be possible with a basic web stack though, but either users will have to make accounts on every person's site, or the site has to accept no user auth. (but this could be resolved with a identity provider standard, like disqus does)

I suppose another thing activityPub does is distribute content to multiple servers. Not sure if this is really desirable though?

Anyways, did I miss anything?

I've noticed that there isn't a single Lemmy community, Mbin magazine etc. for Fediverse memes.

Is that because 99.9% of the Threadiverse came directly from Reddit, almost all Lemmy communities and *bin magazines are outposts of subreddits, and Reddit doesn't meme the Fediverse because hardly anyone on Reddit knows the Fediverse in the first place?

Is it, in addition, because especially Lemmy is too detached from the rest of the Fediverse to know what's memeable and to really understand memes about the Fediverse outside Lemmy?

Or is it simply because Fediverse memes go into other, more general communites/magazines where they simply drown in the flood of other threads?

I mean, I barely see any memes about the Fediverse anywhere on Mastodon. That may be either because your typical Mastodonian is not cut from meme-maker wood, or your typical Mastodonian doesn't know enough about the Fediverse beyond Mastodon, or next to nobody hashtags their meme posts. so they're impossible to find.

And so I thought that this is more common in the Threadiverse, seeing as how meme-happy Reddit is.

All I can find are third party apps for Bluesky but I can’t find anything like a Lemmy style service or Instagram style service using the AtProtocol

Is there any fediverse client out there (mobile or pc or web) that has support for multiple types of content, rather than just for one?

Most apps I find are only mastodon-like (including pleroma etc.), or only lemmy-like, or only peertube-like. One of the main benefits of the fediverse is that I could theoretically access all of those from one platform. But the clients I saw don't seem to support it too well.

Sub.club thinks premium feeds could also serve other use cases, like supporting helpful bots or generating funds to help maintain a community's Mastodon server, for instance.

So... if the backend gets moved over to Wordpress, and Wordpress can already federate, I guess this means Tumblr is coming to the fediverse? 😮

sub.club's a project of The BLVD, Inc, the makers of @mammoth. I know there was a lot of skepticism when Marc Benioff, Mozilla, Long Ventures et al, funded Mammoth ... with so many good apps out there, how are they expecting to get VC-level returns on their investment? But if sub.club can tap into the creator economy, there's clearly money to be made!

Last night Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram, quitely announced the next step in the integration of Threads into the Fediverse. In addition to being able to follow Threads accounts from Fediverse/Mastodon accounts, we can now reply to and like Threads posts. Threads are taking a quiet, incremental approach to Federation, but seem genuinely commited.

If you turn on sharing to the fediverse, users on other servers can search for and follow your profile, view your posts, interact with your content, and share your content to anyone on or off their server. On Threads, you’ll be able to see the number of users on other servers who liked your post. You'll also be able to see and like their replies to your post.

Meta announced that users on Threads will be able to see fediverse replies on other posts besides their own. In addition, posts that originated through the Threads API, like those created via third-party apps and scheduling services, will now be syndicated to the fediverse.

Discuit is one of the alternatives to Reddit which emerged at the same time as Lemmy (the other one being Tildes, mentioned at the end of the post)

We can see that federation was indeed a better solution, looking at the difference in number of Discuit and Tildes (not federated) vs Lemmy/Mbin/Piefed

I can’t find any working mastodon instances for porn except adult.18plus.social but i need to pay a fee.. i̵ ̵n̵e̵e̵d̵ ̵f̵r̵e̵e̵ ̵o̵n̵e̵s̵.̵. (EDITED: SORRY) Actually there used to be Sinblr, Humblr, and others.. but they all shut down for some weird reason I don’t understand.. WHAT HAPPENED?

I've been trying to use Matrix to replace sites like Discord or Slack. But it seems that if a user creates an invitation-only room in a server, then invited users who are registered on other servers get errors when trying to join. Not very useful error messages either: "Failed to join room". (In my case, I tried creating accounts and rooms at nitro.chat and then at converser.eu, but friends registered at matrix.org don't manage to join).

Quite a let-down. Anyone who's facing the same problem and has maybe managed to solve it?

I am considering using a Fire tablet and a Chromebook and would like to know what OS I need to access the Fediverse suite of apps.

Is the Fediverse accessible as part of the Amazon and Google suite of apps?

Would I be able to access it on the Web anywhere no matter what device?

I intend to use the Fediverse everywhere if possible no matter what device I may acquire.
