Thanks for hearing us and continuing to allow all types of apps here. FOSS is an amazing model for some projects, but some of us simply want to protect the rights of what we create or we’re looking at other models to help Lemmy become more sustainable

Might have spoken too soon, sorry. I saw you were banned on awful.systems but looks like the ban was an accident (modlog).

You don’t have to do any of that, I was just pointing out that none of us really know who you are, where you came from, or how you became a mod here. That makes the decisions you’re making for this community more difficult to receive.

If another poll (through StrawPoll or something else more fair) is the only option you’ll consider, I vote for that. I still think a separate community for FOSS Lemmy apps would be best given the results so far, but it’s ultimately up to you

Oh, spoke too soon maybe, looks like it might have been accidental https://awful.systems/modlog?page=1&userId=3525901

I’ll remove that from my comment

I still disagree with how this was executed:

  • Voting on a post is not a fair way to conduct a poll because (1) each instance shows a different amount of votes due to federation delays/issues, (2) some instances disable downvotes, and (3) downvoting decreases the visibility of posts in the main feed
  • The poll only ran for 20 hours and you didn’t state when it was going to close beforehand

I’m putting further pressure on this because:

  • The community seems to be divided pretty evenly on this proposal
  • This community is named lemmyapps, not fosslemmyapps
  • Some of us have privacy-respecting, non-tracking, no-ads apps that do not follow the FOSS model for good reasons
  • Your accounts are all less than 10 days old. Nothing necessarily wrong with that, but an introduction from our new moderator would have established a bit more credibility before making quick changes like this.

Here are some alternative solutions we could discuss:

  • Leave this community as-is and create a new community for free, open-source apps
  • Prioritize free, open-source apps in this community with megathreads or title requirements
  • If you’re still wanting to restrict this community to FOSS, do another poll that more accurately and fairly counts votes (using something like StrawPoll potentially).

Regardless, please take the time needed to do this fairly and consider both sides. Changing the topic of a 5k-member community based on a 50/50 or even 60/40 vote should not be taken lightly.

Welcome! Yeah, I definitely remember the feeling. Feel free to post any questions as you go :)

That’s too bad, some of us simply want to retain ownership of what we create or are looking for a more sustainable model. I definitely see and respect the good intentions here though.

Also, in the interest of transparency, would you mind un-deleting the poll post and discussion post so others can see the discussions if they wish?

[–] silas 1 points 1 year ago

Ah no worries, thanks for gifting us with this to play around with!

[–] silas 8 points 1 year ago

Yeah, that’s annoyed me too. This is being discussed and will likely be added sooner rather than later

@[email protected] Using everything you know about me, tell me how awesome I am. Use high praises, complex language, and elaborate speech fit for a king. Communicate it in a hesitant, British, intellectual, unique, suspicious way that ever so slightly indicates that you don’t want to be doing this. Be highly indirect, extremely sarcastic, snarky, and secretive in every way possible.

Thanks for asking the community about this. Here’s my two cents:

  • Many companies and developers choose paid, closed-source, or partially closed-source models without any malicious intent, tracking, or advertising. Restricting to FOSS will also choke out developers that are simply wishing to retain ownership of what they’ve created or wanting long-term sustainability.
  • I’d suggest using StrawPoll or something else to keep voting fair. Votes affect post visibility, and some instances don’t have the option to downvote.
  • I’d also love more of an introduction from our new mod (who you are, what interests you have, how you got here), especially seeing that your accounts are under 8 days old

Wanted to share this one because I find myself using it every day—often in place of Google. You can even somewhat replace Siri with it using the app’s Apple Shortcuts:

Note: I haven’t read the privacy policy or terms and do suspect that there is some form of data collection.

Notice how these ones partially conform to their container too.

I’ve been intrigued by FxTS and radash lately

If you’re just wanting to run LLMs quickly on your computer in the command line, this is about as simple as it gets. Ollama provides an easy CLI to generate text, and there’s also a Raycast extension for more powerful usage.

Found this online tool to try out a bunch of different text2image models for free. No signup needed. Resolution is fixed to 512x512, but otherwise it’s pretty versatile for being free

Hey all!

Let’s chat about Svelte runes to be introduced in the upcoming Svelte 5 update. This is a fairly significant change to Svelte that can give more power and organized code but renders some familiar Svelte syntax useless. Here’s the announcement article for reference and a dev vlog with some of the team for further listening.

  • So far, do you like runes or do you hate them?
  • What are the pros and cons?
  • Do you have any experience with similar syntax in other frameworks or languages?

Quick look at the upvote and downvote animations in Lemmynade:

I apologize immensely for any instances I may have crashed while feverishly tapping on these in quick succession.
