It's not locked, build it yourself or download the apk from fdroid. If that is too complicated for you (or anyone else), maybe pay for the service being provided then?
I've driven a lot in the US (around a dozen different states) and Europe (most of the western continent), they are way further back in the US. As far as I can tell, this is because visibility in junctions is generally much better in the US. Also, the lack of roundabouts is frustrating, but right on red is awesome.
What are some of the limitations in Syncthing that this overcomes?
A surface pro gets 3-4 hours in my experience.

Bazzite shit the bed when I tried it, regular people would need to get lucky with their hardware configuration.
Profit isn't the issue, it's having to continually show outsized profit growth rates to keep shareholders happy that's the problem. Look at private companies like Valve for comparison.
