We also have impeccable uptime as you'd expect.
I'm a software engineer, and it never stops. Things just get stranger.
If anyone's ever in Monterey the aquarium is 100% worth visiting. I grew up going there all the time, and I've dragged many friends there too who all loved it. They post feeding times on the maps they give you so you can go watch all the animals be fed. Get there 20 minutes early for the sea otters though to get a good spot, because the entire aquarium congregates there during feeding time.
I don't even think that's necessarily the issue as The Outer Worlds took this approach and the game was fantastic, albeit a bit short. I think it just stands out in addition to the rest of the game being bland.
I guess I've never considered myself that "posh" (not British but can't think of a better word). Fair enough though might have to give it a try!
Yup! We actually have this with smart thermostats here. You sign up for a rebate when you get your smart thermostat in exchange for them being able to set it to 78 when needed.
I don't personally have AC, and a bunch of people who didn't read anything about the rebate were salty, but I personally think it's a perfect example of everyone working together for a greater good.
This is a super interesting question!
For me IDK if any amount of money would significantly improve my life. I'm not terribly materialistic and I'm happy with what I have/don't feel like I immediately want or am missing something. I make good money and stash as much as possible while still enjoying nights out with friends and buying whatever I want.
I'm currently saving up a quarter million for a house down payment, and while it's a lot of money my quality of life/overall happiness would be the same so I wouldn't call the change significant. Things are really good in my life for once, and it's nice to be able to recognize that. Thanks for the question it actually made me really happy to think about how lucky I am.
I hope others in this thread who need it can find some fortune in their future.
The grid as is can handle it due to the majority of charging being done overnight when electricity is cheap and demand is low. If most vehicles had two way charging it could actually make the grid better due to cars being able to offset increased usage during peak hours.
The grid issues do exist but are over sensationalized by the media. You'll get a rolling blackout maybe once a year, if that, but there's usually only a week or two where we're explicitly told to conserve power due to a heat wave. In which case you get a text on your phone that says, "set your AC to 76 or 78", and enough people do so that the power almost always stays on. The one time I've gotten that text and then the power went out it was only out for 5 minutes. I think enough people got the hint though because it didn't go out again.
When I lived in the central valley our power went out more due to cars hitting telephone poles than grid issues. Never lost power since moving to the bay area even through this last brutal AF summer.
I wish I could wear something like that, but it'd make me feel pretentious. Not that I think people wearing them look or come off as pretentious, but for me it'd feel that way. I couldn't pull it off anyway since my daily attire is a hoodie and jeans/joggers.
Is that actually a thing? Or just a joke?
Your perception of Google software engineers is way off. They're more often than not some of the best software engineers in the industry because their hiring bar is very high, and they get paid like it. YouTube is an astounding complex problem to solve with thousands of moving parts and non-trivial problems. It's honestly astounding people are able to build sites that complex, and that they're not only common but extremely reliable.
The issue is there are even more extremely intelligent software engineers outside of Google than in, and many of them spend some of their free time working on FOSS projects including ad-blockers. It's also almost always harder to be red team (attacker, or the ad-blockers devs) as opposed to blue team (defensive, or the people trying to stop them).
