Last year, coal accounted for 60 per cent of Teck’s revenue and 75 per cent of its profit. (from the Globe and Mail)

This sounds like a massive downsizing. Is Teck in need of cash or is this a strategic move? Most of these mines produce metallurgical coal so not used for power generation. Do they see that steel production wil switch off coal? Are there even good alternatives to metallurgical coal?

I feel like Bookwyrm has proven the idea of a federated review platform. Could this be extended to local business reviews?

I vowed long ago to stop contributing to closed platforms such as on Google Maps or Yelp. Could a federated alternative be a good solution?

I would like to join a cooperatively owned instance.

I have been tempted to join cosocial.ca, however I don't care for microblogging (Mastodon) as much as something forum-like such as a Lemmy instance.

Those look great! How did you decide it was time to harvest them? This is my first year growing garlic.

How to deal with rats coming from neighbour's yard? (lemmy.ml)
 

I love growing my own food but I have had to limit the types of plants I grow because rats always come and eat them.

In previous years I have had rats devour my entire beet, carrot, pea, and strawberry harvests each in a matter of one or two nights.

I set snap traps every night with peanut butter (and trip them every morning so I don't kill any birds). Last year I killed 17, this year I have already killed 5.

I am now growing peas that climb taller so the rats can't reach them. Next year I plan on hanging my strawberry plants off the ground. I have started removing all the lower branches of my tomatoes so they can't climb them. I have given up on carrots, beets, and daikon...

Has anyone found any effective methods to manage this? My neighbour won't do anything about the rats and their property is entirely overgrown.

I have heard spreading hot pepper flakes can discourage them from coming around.
