I want to make signing up to my instance as unattractive to bots and vote manipulation as possible. If I could turn off all voting on Lemmy I absolutely would. I think activitypub votes are spam and just because reddit used them doesn't mean that it should be required. I used forums and other websites for a long time before Reddit even existed without voting and my time with Reddit and now Lemmy has left me unconvinced that it is worth while. I think engagement with comments is the only thing worth anything on this platform and some day I'd like to see a sorting algorithm that only took traffic and comments into account for scoring.

Anyway, I try my best to review the users who sign up and the comments that are made to my instance. I typically deny new applicants with disposable email addresses as well.

But there are some accounts that were created that have no activity that I can see easily from lemmy-ui and I'm not really at the point where I am reviewing SQL database. I want to confirm disabling downvotes at least prevented that kind of bot activity and I was wondering if there is anything else I can be doing? I can see how upvoting fascist and western centric points of view can also be problematic by boosting a state actor's propaganda in a mirror of downvotes silencing minority views.

I hope my post doesn't break the rules ; I'd like to invite as many people as possible to participate to Sunnyvision, the summer edition of the Lemmyvision song contest.

The aim is to promote different languages and cultures from around the world, to share more between our online communities across Lemmy, and discover songs from lesser known artists.

For this 'lighter' edition, the goal is to celebrate the last week of summer, with some summer related tunes. You do not need to bring your instance/community, everyone can share a song, no matter what instance they're on, as long as they can federate here!

This is my first try at creating a map of lemmy. I based it on the overlap of commentors that visited certain communities.

I only used communities that were on the top 35 active instances for the past month and limited the comments to go back to a maximum of August 1 2024 (sometimes shorter if I got an invalid response.)

I scaled it so it was based on percentage of comments made by a commentor in that community.

In the development and building of a shared, open, collaborative network, efforts have come and gone over the years for the Fediverse. We dig into the history, various attempts, and some of the ideas people have had.

I recently read Has the IndieWeb Become Irrelevant from starbreaker.org. The post does a great job linking to and summarizing a spate of posts that I will call “people being mad at the IndieWeb”, while also being one of these posts. These posts accuse “the IndieWeb” of being elitist, exclusionary, overengineered, complicit, and unnecessary, among many other things. There are some common threads I noticed among these posts: None of them mention micro.

Is there any fediverse client out there (mobile or pc or web) that has support for multiple types of content, rather than just for one?

Most apps I find are only mastodon-like (including pleroma etc.), or only lemmy-like, or only peertube-like. One of the main benefits of the fediverse is that I could theoretically access all of those from one platform. But the clients I saw don't seem to support it too well.

On Wednesday, Meta announced that users on Threads will be able to see fediverse replies on other posts besides their own. Hello Lemmings!

I am thinking of making a community moderation bot for Lemmy. This new bot will have faster response times with the help of Lemmy webhooks, an amazing plugin for Lemmy instances by @[email protected] to add webhook support. With this, there is no need to frequently call the API at a fixed interval to fetch new data. Any new data will be sent via the webhook directly to the bot backend. This allows for actions within seconds, thus making it an effective auto moderation tool.

I have a few features I thought of doing:

• Welcome messages
• Auto commenting on new posts
• Scheduled posts
• Punish content authors or take action on content via word blacklist/regex
• Ban members of communities by their usernames/bios via word blacklist or regex
• Auto community lockdown during spam

What other features do you think are possible? Please let me know. Any questions are also welcome.

Community requested features:

• Strike system

Strikes are added to a certain member of the community and the member will be temporarily banned within a time period if their strike count reaches a certain threshold

• Post creation restriction by account age

If an account's age is lower than X, remove the post.

I've been researching for the past week Threadiverse projects (Lemmy at first, then PieFed and now Mbin) with the goal of testing out their interoperability with the rest of the Fediverse.

Apologies in advance if this is the third post you see from me - this one is my first in Mbin.

I wonder if you have any insights regarding the differences between the 3 - advantages/disadvantages and opinions on your favorite project?

I'm also interested to see if Mbin manages to federate mentions (unlike Lemmy and PieFed who falls short). So for the purposes of this test, I'm mentioning:

Do the advantages of deleting one's entire Reddit history outweigh the disadvantages?

I have previously nuked my first Reddit account because it felt satisfactory to be completely detached from a platform one considers unethical/bad. Though, I have garnered quite some history on a second account—because Duty Calls*, of course—and I'm considering doing the same.

However, I don't want to do it impulsively. I think I might be blind to some disadvantages. What do you think?

The git repository is unreachable since a few hours ago, when I turned off my instance for the first time months to upgrade it, removed the docker image and was cloning the source code to build a fresh one. In the middle of the clone operation the repository went down. How can I be so unlucky?

Flipboard continues its rollout of federation capabilities, this time implementing a "soft-follow" system for users to try out federated subscription for the very first time.

Within the last few years, publishing within the Fediverse has started to take off. This week's opinion piece focuses on some of the current hurdles this network has, when it comes to user experience, and proposes ideas and a vision of what's possible.

As we've been building out our site, we've wanted to showcase the icons of various projects and protocols. However, there's been a real lack of any kind of icon font for that purpose...Mastodon is pretty much the only Fediverse project to be featured in FontAwesome, and the ForkAwesome project has been dormant for a long time.

So, we've been building our own.

The Mastodon For Harris campaign has raised close to $500,000 within two weeks of being live. It is probably the largest attempt for political organizing on the Fediverse, and may provide a playbook for other efforts going forward.
