These things are dangerous. This person is using it at a safe distance but you can blind somebody at close range. Either that or the camera is insanely good lol

[–] [email protected] 26 points 11 months ago

if the camera has a strong low light settings, it would crank up the whole picture, not just where the flashlight is pointing

Anyone got a light, dropped my keys..

Aye, let me just turn on the sun.

An underrated fact about LED flashlights is that even cheap ones can be as brights as high end flashlights with incandescent/halogen/xenon bulbs. I grew up always trying to find one bright enough, now it’s usually not a concern. I usually have the luxury to care more about convenience and form factor, than brightness.

I've now had the opposite problem where some are too bright and didn't come with a dim enough setting. It's actually so bright it dazzles my eyes and I can barely see the thing it's pointing at.

Fun fact, you were probably using a low CRI light. Cooler blue hues wash out your target in a wall of white, which humans perceive as brighter without actually seeing anything.

An equivalent high CRI light allows you to see your target accurately at the same brightness level, but humans perceive it as darker even though you see more.

Modern flashlights are absolutely amazing and shock 9/10 people even in the trades because they still think of the hideous 90s maglites as standard.

Flashlights

Iirc this is an old video, and in the previous comments I've read about this, this only works for seconds at best - then you have to go change the batteries

[–] [email protected] 8 points 11 months ago

So according to this review it lasts about 40min at the brightest setting. It does get dimmer over time and also has very noisy active cooling though.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 11 months ago

I still think it’s worth it

[–] [email protected] 4 points 11 months ago (1 children)

Is that why the gif is so frustrating? 10 seconds of suspense, then 3 seconds of bright light, then it's over.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 11 months ago

I think the op just didn't want to piss off everyone in those buildings

[–] [email protected] 4 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago) (1 children)

Pretty sure this is a IMALENT SR32 or MS18.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 11 months ago (2 children)

MS18 actually. Genuinely the brightest handheld flashlight in the world.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 11 months ago

I've seen Direct D shine this back at cops when they point their flashlights at his cameras. They aren't supposed to do it, it's called prior restraint. This flashlight is the perfect response.

My opinion is that LEP lights are going to be brighter than anything LED very soon. Right now they’re on basically the first generation of LEP chips, but in a couple of years when engineers figure out the spot/flood distribution for LEP lenses combined with the natural efficiency and brightness gains that come with maturing light technologies…

Now, we just need to make it a rule that all flashlights need potting so they can survive being used in the real world.

Takes 8 21700 batteries, will run for 60 seconds on Turbo mode. Holy shitballs.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 11 months ago

I think 60s is because of heat and not power consumption but I’m no flashlights doctor
