A lot of subs seem to be staying dark (https://lemmy.nz/post/43541), but seems like r/nz will be back at 4pm.

I don't think I'll be going back, although not deleting my account just yet.

Anyone planning on heading back there full time? (no judgement!)

No. I habitually opened RIF so I removed the icon and replaced it with Jerboa, and I've found, thanks to the smaller scale, that I move on to something else or read a book sooner.

Doesn't take long to move on really.

I'm hoping the fediverse will take off once it's easier to find communities to add to favourites. It'd be good to find things like ELI5 and AMA appear.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Someone has set up an ELI5 over on kbin but there's no actual content yet in spite of having a few subscribers. I guess it's a case of 'be the change you want to see' at least for now.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm not sure I agree. I've subscribed to a couple of communities and there is already some content. Of course not the same amount as Reddit but that's alright. Lemmy doesn't have to be the same size as reddit. I like the small scale of Lemmy. People are very friendly. And yes, be the change you want to see, so keep on posting :)

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

I'm happy with the rate of growth, it's just a case of poking around and, as has been said, create the communities that don't exist. I'm reading and upvoting content, hoping others are doing the same!

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago

It's becoming less and less likely, the more that Reddit keeps on messing up. Threatening moderators and undeleting posts??

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 year ago

Haven't deleted my account, but so far I've been happy browsing the various communities, honestly with the size of reddit, it was so anonymous that it had far surpassed critical mass, so the fediverse doesn't really have to be large to make it a viable alternative

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago

The sexy John Oliver pictures at r/pics is a hell of a temptation to go back haha

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago

Nope. Just deleted my 10+ year old reddit account and my thousands of comments

I'm all in on Lemmy!

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago

I didn't know there was an alternative to /r/NZ. Just stumbled on this. Will be interesting to see if it gains traction.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 year ago

Nope. Have scrubbed all my accounts, deleted them, deleted Baconreader. Lemmy so far is cool!

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Probably not, seems like my excuse to go outside and touch grass... yet here I am.... 🙄

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago

Well, the weather probably doesn't help. Stay indoors for the next two months and then re-evaluate.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 year ago

Unlikely at this stage. I feel incredibly disappointed from how Reddit themselves have handled it by basically ignoring the blackout. I'm here and downloaded Jerboa. Time for a change after 12 years

I will still use Reddit when information I am looking for doesnt exist on Lemmy. I am setting up communities for things that dont yet seem to exist on Lemmy. This should satisfy my "things I like" meter if they grow.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

I'll lurk, and also I kinda don't want to disappoint the dragon hunters

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

No, I don't see the point without Bacon Reader.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Same as a few others have said, if the apps go, I go.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Not if my app stops working. It's as simple as that. And I am not going to use their app.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

I hope that most of the subs I used to frequent eventually pop up here (many already are here in some form) but if not I think I'd still rather be here with all that's been going on over there lately. BUT often there's good trouble shooting content or info about super specific niches which I might occasionally refer to. At the end of the day I'm just looking for a place to discuss / read about communities I'm interested in and I can see this providing that even IF it never reaches the critical mass of reddit.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I just went to the sub I'm the sole mod for, opened it up after the 2 day blackout. Then flicked across to 'all' and saw the reddit CEO making 'this will pass' noises so went back to my sub and closed it up again. I might open it up tomorrow again and ask if any of the 1500ish members want to mod it to keep it going. [I don't see why my boycott has to be anyone elses issue] or I might just let it die...see how I feel in the morning.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I think that's a good attitude. If someone else is really keen to mod it and keep it going let them have at it but you can create a community over here for those looking to make the move

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

It was a tiny [1278 member] niche investment sub. It has 2 years of tech questions and answers.

This morning I posted this and walked away.

"I'm out, I've meet greasy little fucks like spez in real life and you couldn't pay me to associate much less have me waste my time for free. Experimenting with https://lemmy.nz/

I'm not comfortable with the 'take my ball and go home' form of boycott . Seems selfish.

So I'll put the sub on 'restricted' after this post which will mean no new posts but you can use the search function within the sub to probably get answers on issues as a lots been covered over the couple of years.

That's my first layer of compromise.

The second is if someone want's to mod and bring it back fully then send me a message and you can take a seat on this rancid exploitative corporate vehicle.

I'm out."

I check in about once a day from RIF. But once it is dead at the end of the month that's it.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I refuse to install the app on my phone, so when Sync stops working I'll stop browsing there. I'll probably still pop over on the web version (https://old.reddit.com) for the subs I like.

But I have enabled my ad blocker now. Only sites I like get the exemption.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

I believe Sync is porting its app to Lemmy :)

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

So long as RIF dies my interest in Reddit will die with it.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Reddit has slowly descended into more and more niche groups for me, and I'm unsubbed from almost all defaults. I'll miss local or special interest groups like r/DIYnz, r/PersonalFinanceNZ, r/Chch. Maybe even r/newzealand. And some hobby groups like r/PrintSF, and r/cricket. I also mod a hobby subreddit with around 80k subs which looks to be voting to stay open, and I think I'll probably be stepping away from it.

It'll be interesting to see where these small subs end up heading - Lemmy seems like a good option.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

I think it will still be valuable for a while as search results, but when my app stops working I doubt I'll continue the mindless content consumption. In the past I've tried to change to other reddit apps and they just aren't as familiar so I always go back. I'm not going to install the official reddit app so that takes away the addiction, I'm hoping.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I’m staying away for now, it was cool but I don’t need it in my life. The memes on lemmy honestly seem better so far anyway.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I mostly used Reddit for Football (Soccer) highlights, so I'm really hoping that Lemmy will provide the highlights for the games I follow. I've subscribed to a few communities that have potential.

I also enjoyed other subreddits such as instant_regret, nextfuckinglevel, yesyesyesnoyes for the LOLs but I can live without that. I'll find my LOLs in other places.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Regarding your second paragraph, which other sources do you have? I used reddit for that as well, and also for reddits like /r/facepalm

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Direct messages between friends, and workmates mostly. Imgur.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Can you direct message here?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Yep. Under someone's post, tap the three dots, then click the envelope button (assuming you're on the website).

You'll find chats and chat rooms on Matrix a lot more common on Lemmy, though (see side bar on home page).

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I doubt I'll go back. The internet is vast, and with places like Reddit, Instagram, Twitter, etc, it's easy to get stuck in that looping cycle of "well there's nothing on Reddit, I'll check Insta. There's nothing on insta, i'll check Twitter. There's nothing on Twitter, I'll check Reddit"

It's a shame that StumbleUpon is no longer around, that was an amazing tool to open your eyes to new resources and sites.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I subscribed to quite a few NZ based subreddits, some of which contain a lot of local/NZ specific information and local expert users who answer questions. I will miss that (I should go through my saved posts on RIF and back them up).

I'm staying off reddit for now as I'm having fun looking for communities on lemmy. I'll see how it goes, but I'm liking this place now more and more.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I'm tempted to bail from it, I left Twitter for Mastodon & never went back and its kinda been really nice to be honest. Way less doom scrolling. Reddit is a bit different in that I was there for the specific communities I was interested in, so I'd be more sad if those folks didn't move as well.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I plan to stay away for a bit. I’ve already deleted Apollo off my phone and have it replaced with Mlem and Memmy.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Good shout on Memmy - just signed up for the Test Flight.

So far I like it better than Mlem since it actually truncates posts to a normal size to easily scroll through!

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Yup, been using it since the TestFlight came out and it’s been a better experience for me than Mlem

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I have already deleted my account, but I was mostly a lurker so I lost little of value. Planning to stay away or at least not make it an active part of my day.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

I've stuck my nose in a couple of times but I've not interacted and I've forced myself to not just "open the tab".

I now open the Play Books app when I've got a few minutes.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 year ago (2 children)

I'm still suspended over there, so there's not much point going back straight away. There's a handful of subreddits that are worth going back for, although I'm not sure if dealing with their app is worthwhile.

Unfortunately there is a lot of valuable knowledge and information that's been built up over the life of Reddit that is useful so I'll still use it for the wealth of info on even the most niche of topics it has but I probably won't mindless browse r/all for hours on end like I used to. I'll try not to anyway lol.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

That should be available via google.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) (1 children)

I probably won’t mindless browse r/all for hours on end like I used to.

Yeah, I've been starting to think I need to find something else to do with the time I used to spend doing that... it's pretty pointless!

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Ditto, I think there’s a lot of us in the same boat. I’m not sure how much was a holdover from lockdown doomscrolling either.^___^
