Got this at an ice cream shop in Denver. It tasted great and was fun to eat.

Interesting, does the charcoal add any flavor to the ice cream or it's just for the show?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

Just for show. I would argue it makes the flavor a little worse.

I've always wondered- does the activated charcoal taste like much of anything? Like was there a flavor other than coconut in the top icecream? What did it taste like?

Coconut and keylime sounds fuckin delicious, and the black color is rather pretty

They made the activated charcoal by burning coconut and then used coconut oil to increase that flavor. Otherwise I didn't taste anything. I imagine without the oil I'd taste the charcoal and it wouldn't have been very nice.

Huh, very interesting

Wouldn’t this be carcinogenic?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

No, it's not the charcoal itself that is carcinogenic, the carcinogenic substances developed when cooking at high temperature and from fat. None of this occurs when making ice cream from activate charcoal.

Unless I'm missing something, not particularly. Im assuming you're asking about specifically the activated charcoal and not the rest of whatevers in it. I can't say for the rest, but no reputable study has ever found activated charcoal to be carcinogenic. There are other things that can be found in charcoal that can be, like silica and the smoke from burning it, but the charcoal is safe.

I had no idea.

Yes, but it's ice cream so folks don't care. Like smoking or drinking - as long as people are having fun they don't mind if it kills them.

I mean, oxygen is highly reactive and damaging. Eventually that kills us too.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 days ago

And I look cool as fuck as I use oxygen too

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Dihydrogen Monoxide is killing us all!

Deadly when inhaled!

And also nullify any medications you might be on.

I think it can be disruptive to gut flora too, reducing the amount

Interesting, I had no idea.

I had dysbiosis a year ago and used activated charcoal tablets to absorb toxins and to calm and reset the flora situation.

I think it worked

Edit: When I say reset I don’t mean that all bacteria and fungi is lowered to 0, it’s always a balancing act with healthy foods at some point.

Guess I'm lucky I'm not on any.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago

Damn, I should have looked.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Interesting. What was the name of the shop? And what is activated charcoal coconut? I’m assuming it isn’t just charcoal since that would probably taste terrible haha

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Tasted like coconut, I don't know much more. Heaven Creamery RiNo is the name of the place.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I figured. Crazy the color though. Kinda cool. I will probably check the place out if I get a chance. I’m not too far away.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The Key Lime Pie was the better of the two flavors, if you're looking for advice lol

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 week ago

Sure but that’s not as weird haha

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 week ago

I can't have the activated charcoal stuff because medications, but it looks so neat!
