Basically exactly what the top says. I want something that screams COMING OF AGE except instead of a teen movie like most coming of age stories, I want an image that showcases coming into 84-year-old-ness

Not an artist but I have an idea!

An image of an old man being given a book by a doctor. The title of the book is clearly visible and reads, "Everything Hurts: A Guide to Aging" and the doctor is saying, "You can skip to chapter 10."

Above the scene is a hospital sign that says "Hospice ➡️" and there's a woman in a wheelchair being pushed in that direction.

There's family members standing around talking about the old man like he's not right there in front of them.

On the wall in the background is a sign describing the, "Silver Alert" system and how to notify the authorities if Grandpa goes missing.

This is sort of a combo of the first and third idea with the doctor explaining the pains of ageing to the old man's family members instead.

You mean like Grumpy Old Men?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

That's a great example of the genre I'm trying to hit but I'm pretty sure they're both 65 though... Think of the Dad from Grumpy Old Men and you'll get exactly what I'm going for.

84ishness suggests grey hair

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 days ago

He is an anomaly, also has a bit of hair left at the top center!

Harold and Maude?

https://imdb.com/title/tt0067185/

Harold is a weird young man, basically emo before emo existed (the movie came out in 1971), routinely fakes his own suicide, goes to funerals as a hobby, proceeds to meet the 79 yo Maude at one, then the two begin a friendship, which eventually becomes a romance.

Its... sort of a coming of age story for both Harold and Maude, who are forced to confront the deeper, uncomfortable aspects of themselves via each other, and both grow to a new level of understanding and acceptance of themselves as a result.

It is a movie that is simultaneously very odd and taboo and shocking, but also very wholesome, hopeful, and funny if you can get past the initial weirdness.

If this sounds anywhere close to interesting, do not look up a plot summary, it'll spoil too much, just actually find and watch the movie.

Hey thanks for the movie tip!

And now: you must've overlooked the community this post is on. We demand a drawing! And don't you dare to delete your comment! We want the drawing in an edit!

(not serious but hey, this is an opportunity to draw! this community doesn't know shitty drawings, just fire up paint or something and use your artistic license :))

Ah, I thought this was someone requesting a story or movie to draw?

There are many scenes in the movie that could be drawn.

As for myself, I have 0 drawing skill, a busted right wrist (I'm right handed) I've been doing physical therapy to for a year, can't type for more than short burst without extreme pain, and I only have a gas station tier smart phone.

Hooray for barely surviving being homeless for a year.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Well, kind of. Posts in this community are requests for drawings and OP's text is the request prompt for a drawing with that theme. And don't get me wrong, the movie looks absolutely fitting, and I got something new to watch, thank you!

And damn, I'm so sorry to hear that.. truly hope that your wrist heals and you regain control soon again.. and I hope you are safe if you are still homeless.

Ignore my comment - I just try to keep top level comments in a post for drawing submissions but when we get a nice comment with a recommendation or something (like yours) it is also fine. I'm not so strict about it and my comment was more of a sarcastic attempt to get a drawing from you (this community is for "bad" drawings too).

So don't worry about drawing, all good! Thanks again for the movie tip and I hope your wrist heals soon and that you are in a safe place now.

I'm doing better than a year ago, and been housed for a while, but if Elon breaks Social Security... which he seems to have just done by ordering the leases for all Social Security offices to be revoked, meaning the SSA no longer has anywhere ... to work... well if that results in my March payment not coming in, I'm probably homeless and starving again.

I'm happy to hear that it's better than a year ago, but hearing about what is going on over there in the US makes me sad for people who are currently / in the future in a bad situation.. I really hope you get that payment and that there are atleast SOME organizations that can help. Fuck man, I'm so sorry to hear that..

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I am unironically down for a sham marriage if you are.

Before I got maimed, by job was db admin/data analyst/all around tech guru for the largest nonprofit in Seattle assisting the homeless.

They didn't give a fuck about their own employee becoming homeless, because they fired him (me).

All the homeless shelters in the country are at max capacity, more and more are shutting down, its harder and harder to qualify for any kind of assistance, money is running out, requirements are more and more complex, and less and less people are processing the paperwork.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Wtf, that is fucked up that a homeless helping organization would not give a fuck about their own employee.. Damn man, I seriously hope for some intervention from your justice system or something to help with the whole running down support structures.

I seriously can't comprehend how people are so stuck up their asses that they would vote for this..

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

The justice system here just got purged and the new Trump sycophants are focused on silencing critics and exacting revenge against anyone who publically made Trump look bad.

Trump and Elon and Vance are calling for any judges that block their wantonly obvious actions to be removed.

We are in the middle of a fascist coup, roughly at the same stage of progression as the Enabling Act being passed in Weimar Germany in 1933.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

That's what it seems like looking at the US from Europe. I have been so saddened to see and hear all the terrible stuff that's going on.

And what baffles me the most is that people vote for fascism. Willingly. Not caring about other people and what happens to them at all or closing your eyes from it.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Fascism is capitalism in decay, it arises out of a failed capitalist society that was promised greatness and doesn't seem to be achieving it.

Fascism is also famously anti-intellectual, appealing to stereotypes, constantly needing enemies, internal and external, as easy scapegoats for the failures of capitalism.

The average adult literacy level in America is now that of a 5th grader, a 10 or 11 year old.

20% of adult Americans are functionally illiterate, reading at a 2nd grade level of worse.

The European stereotype of the boisterous, ignorant, brutish, entitled American didn't go far enough.

US always seems like such a difficult country to live in. Not that my country is perfect, but everything I've heard of US just sounds like it's only good to the rich. I'm sorry you have to deal with a system that was never on your side.
