There seems to be a lot of microblogging going around, but I want a place to put my writings that are much bigger. I know that having my own website is also an option, but I'm finding filtering ethical hosting providers and website builders to be a lot more difficult than I thought it would be, and I'm afraid that even if I find them, it's going to be too expensive.

Not counting WordPress, that I really (really!!!) dislike (just because; your mileage may vary), I would say that Writefreely is the closest to traditional blog platform with activitypub baked in.

You can try it on https://writefreely.org/instances

Have a look for Friendica or Hubzilla.

Wordpress has an ActivityPub plugin to federate your content with Mastodon, Pixelfed, Misskey, and others, and will push their comments back to you.

Would you recommend WordPress as a hosting service? I'm not able to understand the structure of it all to figure out if it:'s ethical and what with the recent fights with WP Engine and stuff, I'm unsure how it all actually works.

Not as a hosting service, no. But at wordpress.org you can download the software and install it on any web server. A lot of web hosting companies offer a 1-click process of setting up wordpress on their servers, too.

wordpress.com, the hosted wp service, is a pretty solid. still comes with matt, though, but that drama doesn't really affect you as a wp.com user.

anyone who comes to me about hosting wordpress, i send there. i don't wanna deal with it, nor do i really want that hackerbot magnet on my boxes.

Honestly I’d not recommend Wordpress at all. It’s quite outdated and therefore a pain in the ass to extend. There are more modern solutions like Craft CMS, Kirby CMS or Laravel with Filament, though ActivityPub support might differ depending on the platform.

I don’t think this person is looking to hack on, or even host their own service. I think they’re looking for a not very expensive turnkey SaaS.

?

Wordpress the software has one of the best extension frameworks of anything I'm aware of. It's old, but it's also well-structured, mature, and has a ton of support. There's a reason it got ActivityPub support so early (in comparison to other similar outside-the-Fediverse platforms).

The leader of the company behind it seems to have lost his mind, but that's not anything against the software. Maybe don't get hosting through Automattic. The software as far as I know is still pretty good.

Ghost has been working on adding activitypub support. They just added the ability to "unfollow" in their work in progress implementation, for example.

I'm guessing Friendica isn't big enough for what you're looking for?

I like bearblog.dev because it uses static pages. It works perfectly for me both as a main webpage and a blog.

Not federated though, so not relevant?

Ah damn! I missed that
