Summary

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum criticized Donald Trump's executive order renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the "Gulf of America."

Sheinbaum stated that while Trump can refer to the American part of the body of water as the Gulf of America, the rest of the world will continue to refer to it as the Gulf of Mexico.

Trump signed the order on Jan. 20, 2025, following his inaugural promise, citing the Gulf's importance to the U.S. economy. Sheinbaum emphasized Mexico’s stance on territorial integrity.

This follows Trump’s recent controversial foreign policy ideas, including proposing Canada as a U.S. state, acquiring Greenland, and considering military action to reclaim the Panama Canal.

Mexico has their first woman president while we have the first convicted felon.

The theory that I heard that made the most sense is that he thinks by renaming it he can circumvent the Biden ban on new oil drilling in the Gulf of Mexico.

[–] [email protected] 30 points 18 hours ago

If that's actually true that's fucking hilarious and really depressing that our legal system could theoretically be worked around so comically. That's like Scooby Doo levels of bullshit.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 15 hours ago

Why would he need to do this? We have a Republican president, congress, and house of reps. Plus the SCOTUS is on his side.

Seems they just need to write up a quick retraction of that and just pass it.

Remember, this loud stupid shit is meant to distract from the important shit.

I don't respect my own nation enough anymore to care what we call locations. Nice to see other nations don't respect our dictates either.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 20 hours ago

Personally I think things like this help let me know how much of a dumbass someone is. If I hear someone call it that, I know not to trust any information that ever comes out of their mouth again because they are an absolute dumbass.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 22 hours ago (2 children)

Has the US ever really been worth any level of respect?

[–] silasmariner 3 points 20 hours ago

There were moments in its history when it maybe wasn't as bad as the competition, but it's not been great of late

[–] [email protected] 2 points 22 hours ago

No, not really.

[–] [email protected] 132 points 1 day ago (6 children)

For most Americans it’s still the Gulf of Mexico.

[–] [email protected] 37 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

I live here, we just call it the Gulf Coast.

Nobody gives a flying fuck what the overgrown orange baby wants to call it.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 day ago (2 children)

What about the part that isn't coast?

[–] [email protected] 25 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Oh, that's the Gulf of Oil.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 hours ago

That's the Persian Gulf.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Obviously it's the gulf coast water.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 21 hours ago

For most Americans

I feel that this somehow requires a "sane" qualifier.

hes using the words we use to name and identify things as a wedge.

can his fucking cholesterol congeal a little faster please.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 19 hours ago

Stupid fucking circus

[–] [email protected] 57 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I remember "freedom fries"

[–] [email protected] 20 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yeah but that's a little more serious because it implies messing with other nations' sovereignty.

I really don't like where this is going.

[–] [email protected] 19 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Naah, I would be more concerned about Panama/Greenland thing.

Calling waters different names is not new. See La Manche vs English Channel for example.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 hours ago

Still too loud and public to be the real play.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 21 hours ago (1 children)

Retardo Mr. T didn't pay attention in school because his dady paid for it. Otherwise he would know the definition of a gulf (not golf), and that it doesn't imply possession.

What, is he goanna rename NewMexico to NewAmerica? Cuz that is something he could try. Maybe California should be now called Smokyfirefornia? Cali is from "caliente" or hot. But California is not just hot, its on fire! Oh but is we must keep it Spanish... Humofuegornia. Just bringing up a few examples of more logical changes within his abuse of power.

Maybe Florida could go by "sharknadoida" or Hurricorida. Texas would an easy change to California, it's fucking hot there. Alabama could be Notobama or just Racistama.

Just examples. I could name Mexico like Druxico. But I got no jurismydicktion there.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

No, Spanish has been banned. From now on, Los Angeles shall be known as The Angels, Las Vegas as The Meadows, Florida as Blossomed, Nevada as Snowfall...

Everyone at UCSD....now they live near The Jewel. And the racists in El Cajon, you guys win! Now you live in " The Box".

National City, you keep your name, well done!

But you Chulavista...now you're CuteView, enjoy!

And San Ysidro...now you're Saint Ysidro unless they want a different take like Saint Javalin. That's a manly name.

And the SantaFe station... Now is the Saint Faith station! Yey!

San Diego... Now you will go by Saint Diego... Again if that's where Big T wants to go...maybe just "Richasscity"? Or maybe move the city so they can expand the airport? Super important airport Lindberg always blocked by high rise buildings that take away from its importance.

I respect President Sheinbaum. I do not respect Insurrectionist Trump. I’d rather the United Corporations of America become Mexican territory right now.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

They have universal Healthcare too, so it would definitely be a win

[–] [email protected] 6 points 22 hours ago

Some of you can join Canada, some Mexico, and the rest left to rot.

[–] [email protected] 21 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I picture him trying to hide the word Mexico with his small hands.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 19 hours ago

or sharpie illustrations?

[–] [email protected] 24 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Maybe we should rename it after Donald. It could be the Gulf of Knowledge. (For my non-native English speaking audience, in this context gulf means a large lack.)

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 19 hours ago)

Gulf of Luigi is perfectly apt, then.

"ICD-10" is a standardized classification system for diagnosing patients. One code a patient can be "diagnosed" with is "Z59.71" which is "No health insurance coverage".

A patient "diagnosed" with Z59.71 is said to be suffering from "Luigi Deficiency".

Next time there's an oil spill it'll be a "Gulf of Mexico" instead of "Gulf of America" problem I bet.😆

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

Mexico, Panama, Greenland, et al might want to remember Russia's playbook for occupying Crimea ... The little green men quietly flooding in on vacation. I can see some copycat bullshit happening from the u.s.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 20 hours ago

This is not a new thing. American shitstains have been trying to take Cabos for years.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 day ago

Meanwhile Florida press releases are using the "Gulf of America" phrase in critical communications which will just confuse and potentially kill people when they need important information the most.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I wonder who, apart from those who sell maps, might be interested in this nonsense.

[–] [email protected] 22 points 1 day ago (4 children)

@Foni @MicroWave This could be turned into a MAGA loyalty test for the press. When reporters and weather reports refer to the Gulf, they will have to choose between the long-established name or the one that pleases MAGA.

Considering how craven the USA press has been, I think they'll obey in advance and start calling it Gulf of America, but I think most of the foreign press will not.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I live here. The weather people never say 'Gulf of Mexico', they just say Gulf Coast.
