At the time we thought that [email protected] could be it, but after thinking about it again I always feel like having generalist communities on a country-based instance seems counterintuitive. What if at some point Canadians want to discuss specific privacy laws or measures? Also other people tend to think that this community is for Canadians only.

As I guess the main objective is to offer an alternative to [email protected] , there are basically two options

  1. Use [email protected] , but that's another community on LW
  2. Create an alternative community on a generalist instance like lemmy.zip

About [email protected] , the instance still seems unmanaged (https://discuss.privacyguides.net/t/we-re-giving-lemmy-a-try-welcome-to-privacyguides-lemmy-one-x-post/12734/7). There was a mod action 22 days ago, so I guess it's still somehow moderated. Trust level still seems low due to the non communication of the admin on [email protected]

Db0 seems like it would be the most obvious choice, to me.

Good idea, wasn't even aware of this.

I actually said that without knowing that community exists. I chose it because the theme of the instance felt like a good pick for the community goal. The pre-existing community is just a bonus.

Great pick but the mod seems inactive. One could ask db0 for mod perms.

Edit: i'm able to ask, but we should at least have 2-3 mods, i'm busy these days :(

I'm happy to help, wherever we end up deciding to build it :)

@[email protected] @[email protected] I will send them a message on matrix and see what i can do.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 weeks ago

I'm already going to start posting a bit there ha ha

I talked to them. In 3 days if the current mod doesn't respond, they'll make us the mods.

Great! I actually don't even want to be a mod, I have a few communities on my plate already.

Maybe once you and @[email protected] are mods, you can post an announcement there and ask for more mods?

I see, I mistook a comment of yours as approval, sorry 😅

Thanks, will do

Ha! A happy coincidence. I thought I was suggesting creating a new community over there, not taking over one that already exists.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 weeks ago

Infact i already got permission from the mods to inherit it, and i have 1/2 mods required :)

Programming.dev had database corruption for 3 months: https://programming.dev/post/20515601

I like the instance, but it seems like they are a bit short staffed when technical issues occur

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

O shit. it'd be a fitting topic for it to be there, but that seems like a dealbreaker.

infosec.pub seems good too, tho its about security. (tho they are heavily related topics)

We just added a couple more people to have server access and ideally that situation wont happen again

That problem specifially could only be reproduced on the main server so fixes couldnt be tested without taking the entire site down and at some point after the 0.19.5 upgrade (when the issue happened) it became too late to roll the server back since there was too many activities that came in but if it happens again after an upgrade we would roll back pretty much instantly)

dbzer0 does seem like a better option for general privacy discussion though

Good to hear!

Indeed!

While this doesn't solve the problem of a general privacy community, the most recent update on this is from 2 days ago, about exploring support for Lemmy

https://meta.discourse.org/t/activitypub-plugin/266794/346

See also this older related thread

https://socialhub.activitypub.rocks/t/lemmy-discourse-federation/4177

If it works, it would open us up to a lot of official communities (PrivacyGuides and Mozilla both use Discourse for example)

I just hope that if/when this is implemented, those other entities have a good experience with activitypub and don't turn it off after a brigade or something

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 weeks ago

Good news, curious to see how the integration will happen!
