Following up on this post: https://feddit.org/post/2379333/1762691

An list of potential memes: https://feddit.org/post/2379333/1722394

A meme posted to [email protected] : https://feddit.org/post/2421485

@[email protected] already expressed interest.

For me, there are a few pros and cons.

Pros:

  • Memes are an easy way to convey a message
  • Fediverse-specific content is always nice

Cons

  • Memes communities tend to be very popular
  • Due to the topic of the community, there might be some heated debates and discussions in the comments (the example above with the vegan cat food is a good example). That might be quite time-consuming to follow and moderate

Based on this, I think we would need probably at least 5 mods to make sure the community stays sufficiently moderated.

Are any of you interested?

By the way, which instance would you like to host it on?

Actually I just remember lemmy.zip could be nice too

@[email protected] would you like to mod too?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Thanks for asking, but memes are not my thing. Though, I can add a mention to the community in [email protected] sidebar.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 months ago

Alright, we'll keep you posted

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I'm all about the memes, so feel free to use dbzer0

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 months ago (2 children)

Thanks for offering! Do you know mods on your instance who would be interested in modding this community with us?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 months ago

Ah no I don't have anyone specific in mind. But they don't have to be from my instance anyway. Personally I find that at the start of a comm, there's not much moderation needed anyway

Also bear in mind that Admins also get reports and can step in to help out - dbzero has half a dozen.

Good to know, thanks! 2 more mods to go 😄

[–] recursive_recursion 3 points 3 months ago (1 children)

even if we don't find additional mods at this exact moment lemmy know if you still want to create the community as I'm sure we'll find willing mods in the near future🌻

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 months ago (2 children)

I'm on the cautious side on this one, seeing the cat vegan foot debate is still getting comments a week after, I expect the potential of reports for memes talking about such dramas to be quite high 😅

[–] recursive_recursion 1 points 3 months ago

honestly that's totally fair👍

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I think that's an exception. It'll mostly be beans.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Feel free to comment on [email protected] so that I can appoint you as mod

(I know you're an admin, but let's pretend)

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago

I'm good at pretending!

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I already mod too much, but someone please tell me as soon as this is a thing so I can sub and post.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 months ago

We'll keep you posted!

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 months ago (2 children)

I'd be willing to help, but I'd like to know you're logic for such a niche community needing 5 mods? I can't imagine such a community would get more traffic than, say, [email protected] and I wouldn't call that community under-moderated.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Thank you!

Better safe than sorry to be honest, it might be niche but it might have a wide audience due to the topic.

Seems like you have a feddit.uk account, so that might be where we host it.

@[email protected] would you be okay to open a feddit.uk alt to mod? Reports don't federate properly at the moment

[–] recursive_recursion 2 points 3 months ago (1 children)

yup can do!
thank you for the update🤗

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Cool, I'll open the community tomorrow if I find some time

Please comment on the first post with a feddit.uk account so I can appoint you as a mod

done
thanks for the heads up!

Here we go, feel free to comment on the first post and I'll appoint you as mod: [email protected]

Memes communities tend to be very popular

Maybe, but if it's limited in scope to memes about the Fediverse, the community might not exactly be overrun. Hardly anyone in the Fediverse memes the Fediverse, and outside the Fediverse where the huge majority of memes on Lemmy come from, nobody does.

That is, if such a community exists, maybe it'll drive people to meme the Fediverse in the first place.

Indeed. There was another goad load of drama last week on Lemmy, definitely material for some memes
