Welcome

Welcome to c/[email protected]. Broadly, this community is a place to discuss veganism. Discussion on intersectional topics related to the animal rights movement are also encouraged.

What is Veganism?

'Veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals ...'

— abridged definition from The Vegan Society

Rules

The rules are subject to change, especially upon community feedback.

  1. Discrimination is not tolerated. This includes speciesism.
  2. Topics not relating to veganism are subject to removal.
  3. Posts are to be as accessible as practicable:
    • embedded images of text require alt-text
    • posts with an image of text should have a transcription in the body or alt-text
    • paywalled articles must have an accessible non-paywalled link;
    • use the original source whenever possible for a news article.
  4. Content warnings are required for triggering content.
  5. Bad-faith carnist rhetoric & anti-veganism are not allowed, as this is not a space to debate the merits of veganism. Anyone is welcome here, however, and so good-faith efforts to ask questions about veganism may be given their own weekly stickied post in the future.
    • before jumping into the community, we encourage you to read examples of common fallacies here.
    • if you're asking questions about veganism, be mindful that the person on the other end is trying to be helpful by answering you and treat them with at least as much respect as they give you.
  6. Posts and comments whose contents – text, images, etc. – are largely created by a generative AI model are subject to removal. We want you to be a part of the vegan community, not a multi-head attention layer running on a server farm.
  7. No brigading, either off-site or on-site. An incitement to brigade includes two elements: a call to disruptive action and a specific direction outside of this community in which to take that action. Exceptions include:
    • Calls to boycott.
    • Calls to in-person protest of a government, high-profile individual, or company/organization.
    • Votes provided they have a sufficiently broad target audience or provably effective controls against vote brigading.
    • Petitions.
  8. All Lemmy.World Terms of Service also apply.

Oh man tempeh is awful to me. I went vegan and I love tofu, I'm Latin American so I love beans, and there's lots of other great stuff but I dunno why I thought tempeh was terrible when I tried it.

I like the meat substitutes they sell now. I have loved Bologna since I was a kid and I thought I'd miss it till I found vegan Bologna that tastes exactly the same. Hot dogs as well.

Tempeh tastes to me like a savory, moist granola bar. It’s not a bad taste, but the texture is the worst part of cooked nuts, imo.

Tofu, beans, lentils, and seitan are all great in my book, but I haven’t figured out a way to eat tempeh that I like.

@idiomaddict @jo3rn it’s easy for sure to have a bad tempeh meal – i’ve had lots if them! my favorite preparations now have been fresh tempeh in indonesian-like recipes. also, homemade tempeh “bacon” with avocado on anything

Cooked nuts? Tempeh is fermented soy beans...

[–] [email protected] 1 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Well yeah, but it’s not smooth like tofu, there’s still chunks of bean that don’t get fully softened, but also don’t stay fully crunchy. It’s similar to the texture of stir-fried cashews (just held together), which I’m not a fan of.

Unless I’ve only had bad tempeh, which is very possible: I first had it in my college dining hall and I’ve only tried it once or twice since.

Ah okay, makes sense.

And yeah, I actually never had tempeh myself. No idea where one would buy that around here...

Try slicing it into strips and pan frying until crisp. Good way to get started.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 7 months ago (1 children)

How thin should the strips be, like celery stalks or more like fruit-by-the-foot?

[–] kevin 1 points 7 months ago

I do mine at about 5mm or 1/4 inch. After slicing you can also marinade them in lightly salted water. Just make sure that it is dried well before frying. You can even try them dipped in a simple batter. I prefer the plain fried ones though. Crisp on the outside. Goes well with rice dishes.

@idiomaddict @Nuke_the_whales it pays to chase down good tempeh. Here in Australia the supermarket tempeh is very bland. Buy from a producer at a market, or from an Asian grocery.

You can also make it yourself! Nothing like fresh tempeh.

The best tempeh I've had was when it's cooked with sauce, onions, and peppers, then put on a sandwich to make, essentially, a vegan cheesesteak. i was vegatarian at the time so it had feta on it, but it'd be great with fake cheese.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

Yeah, I'll take tofu or seitan any day over tempeh. I don't hate it, I just don't like it enough to ever really buy it.

I do find it goes well in Thai~ish dishes with satay sauce, though.

I'm the opposite. I hate most soy products (especially tofu and soy milk), but I love tempeh

[–] [email protected] 1 points 7 months ago

I think tempeh is hard to cook with if you're not used to it. I cut out most of any acidic ingredient if I'm cooking with tempeh because it tastes pretty acidic already imo, but I hated it before I figured that out

Legumes? Isn't that just french for vegetables?

[–] [email protected] 24 points 7 months ago (1 children)

It is French for vegetables ("les légumes"), but the English meaning is somewhat different. It's basically lentils, beans, peanuts, chickpeas and such: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legume

Sometimes, they're also referred to as "pulses".

[–] [email protected] 3 points 7 months ago

last time I called them pulses my coworkers though I was talking about something sexual. legumes it is.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 7 months ago

Dunno in French but it Portuguese the word legumes kinda got misused over time to mean just vegetables. We have the word "leguminosas" to mean legume-type foods.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 7 months ago

Legumes = Hülsenfrüchte
