The Mesoamerican Long Count calendar is a non-repeating base-20 and base-18 calendar used by several pre-Columbian Mesoamerican cultures, most notably the Maya. For this reason, it is often known as the Maya Long Count calendar. Using a modified vigesimal tally, the Long Count calendar identifies a day by counting the number of days passed since a mythical creation date that corresponds to August 11, 3114 BCE in the proleptic Gregorian calendar. The Long Count calendar was widely used on monuments.

Background

The two most widely used calendars in pre-Columbian Mesoamerica were the 260-day Tzolkʼin and the 365-day Haabʼ. The equivalent Aztec calendars are known in Nahuatl as the Tonalpohualli and Xiuhpohualli.

The combination of a Haabʼ and a Tzolkʼin date identifies a day in a combination which does not occur again for 18,980 days (52 Haabʼ cycles of 365 days equals 73 Tzolkʼin cycles of 260 days, approximately 52 years), a period known as the Calendar Round. To identify days over periods longer than this, Mesoamericans used the Long Count calendar.

The Long Count calendar is divided into five distinct units:

  • one day - kin
  • 20 days - uinal
  • 360 days - tun
  • 7,200 days - katun
  • 144,000 days - baktun

Mesoamerican numerals

Long Count dates are written with Mesoamerican numerals, as shown on this table. A dot represents 1 while a bar equals 5. The shell glyph was used to represent the zero concept. The Long Count calendar required the use of zero as a place-holder and presents one of the earliest uses of the zero concept in history.

I’m feeling some kinda way tonight. @[email protected]‘s post on food insecurity included 8 questions used by the UN to assess food insecurity and I answered yes to all of them. So did my partner. It doesn’t feel like we’re lacking food very often. We always make sure our kids are fed even when we’re struggling. But like… is this not normal? Having an empty fridge and cupboards sometimes? Or more often, not literally empty, but it’s all condiments and random stuff you can’t really throw together into a meal? Rationing food, skipping meals, eating nothing but pasta for like a week straight because that’s what we’ve got?

Even just saying it all like I feel like I’m exaggerating or playing up something to be worse than it is. But I just thought stuff like this was normal every now and then.

something kind of perverse about how the russian army still sings soviet songs and wears soviet dress uniforms while now serving the vulgar nationalists who cannibalized the union

Just ordered a new laptop! It'll get here Saturday! I buy a beefy one every few years. This one has 32gb ram and a 3080ti, upgrading from a 1070.

What should the first game i run on it be? I have a crack of God of War ready to install. That seems nice for visuals. Havent played any since 3.

Other than that, paying off debts and wedding bills, feels good. Getting to that stable place slowly but surely.

Partner is about to perform, these nights with them are always fun, I have a pocket full of edibles, a cocktail in front of me, and a dress shirt on

The plan is to make caprese sandwiches when we get home lets see if that happens. Ima put some truffle salt on mine.

Starfield is coming in like a month, you have to put up with the windows store, but it's a gamepass game so you could probably get about 2 weeks of free play with the trial, then decide if you want to pay for more.

Oh yeah, you may already have it since it probably runs on a 1070, but RDR2 is an incredible game.
