I unfortunately feel like it probably will end well for them, there really isn't a mainstream alternative for reddit. Lemmy isn't that easy to get into as an average user and the information on the reddit that have amassed over the years is just insane, I assume a lot of people are going to keep using reddit as if nothing has happened.
I don’t know why people are saying Lemmy is difficult. I’m as dumb as a box of hammers and all I did was Google “Lemmy World”, clicked the top link, created an account, subbed to about 80 subs, and started posting.
I have no idea what instances are or the Fediverse. I’m typing in subs and clicking submit.
I just kept crawling and it kept working.

If the 3rd party apps can re-architect around Lemmy, I think a lot more people would ditch Reddit on principle. As it stands, ActivityPub is a bit of a mindfuck to outsiders so even principled Reddit users are likely going to stick around. Until there’s a better mousetrap, so to speak.
An approach 3rd party apps can take could be just hiding the "different instances" aspect of the lemmy and just registering users to a certain preselected instance such as lemmy.world or lemmy.ml I don't know how legal or viable it is but I don't think it would cause much difference for most of the users. Though I feel like hiding a crucial aspect would be a kind of shame.

Reddit did not have that to start with. The people who used it brought it to read it. Many of the same people read it is currently running off. A lot of the information will remain there. But it will also spread elsewhere. Unlike everywhere else though. Reddit is likely to see a lot less updates.

Gee, it's a good thing there aren't dozens of invisible ASCII characters, and even more confusables, some which match the English letters to the pixel!
I used this to get around filters all the time, but I don't need it to work anymore since I don't use reddit now so have fun lads and ladies!

According to the internet spez's net worth is 8 to 10 million dollars. Even if that's wildly incorrect, he isn't even worth an amount of money Musk loses or gains in a few minutes of a normal day.
Wait…so if I used Power Delete Suite to add Fuck Spez to all my old comments I could keep my stuff but the bot would make it all invisible to everyone else automatically? That sounds interesting.

Personally I never knew this because I see no benefit in boosting Reddit's traffic - I just don't bother with it. If I get bored, I'm 80% more likely now to pick up my Kindle and read something and it's much better.
I have noticed a new tendency, however, as now I'm reading 3 books at the same time - just choose which one to continue each time I pick up... right now re-reading Great Expectations, The Oracle Year, and The Midnight Library...

This kind of behavior is what got me to join Lemmy just now. (this is my first ever post in fact.)
I really wasn't even onboard with the boycott. I thought it was silly and pointless and was planning to just stay on reddit, but then he had to tantrum like a child and go against the very spirit and point of reddit in process.
So here I am. I haven't deleted my years old reddit account yet, but I probably will at this point. This lemmy federation thing seems like it will do quite nicely.

The best possible perspective I can come up with is that this is a test. It's all about increasing their marketability for the IPO. Today they're filtering "Fuck Spez", tomorrow they'll be filtering "Fuck ". For a fee, of course, or as a side deal on an ad campaign.

Imagine you're so sad, you create a filter to remove comments of people rightfully calling you out on the internet.
He called Reddit a 'democratic city' where discussions can take place. Well, sounds a lot like he's just a very intolerant mayor who wants to control the flow of discussions when they are about him.
Ceos are just modern day dictators who seek to control the narrative and destroy any opposition. You see it with Spez here, and you see it with Musk on Twitter. They are anti-democratic by nature and resort to authoritarian techniques to maintain their hold and display their power to their immediate in-group.

This is a terrible way to handle this... Let them continue. I'm happy here.
I love how only now are people realizing reddit is dogshit, it's been rotten at the core for a while. The end of Secret Santa marked the last bit of soul the site had.
When Victoria was shit-canned, that opened my eyes, and I didn't like what I saw.
Oh for sure, there were signs for a long time, but it was when they canned Secret Santa that it told me there were no more allowances for fun in the company, even if it barely cost them anything, even if it was just during one fiscal quarter, nope, no room for that -- they had to make room for precious shareholders and profit.
The writing's been on the wall a long time, and watching people who didn't expect it by now run around like headless chickens because "EEEEK REDDIT IS A SOULLESS CORPORATION" is a laugh riot.
