I'm not at all bothered by "swear words," and I'll use them occasionally (mostly when I think it's funny), but it's somewhat rare. I just don't find it very necessary most of the time. I can usually make my point just find without, but sometimes the emphasis seems right out, again, it seems funnier.

I had heard there were shots, but this is the first I heard that it was an assassination attempt.

I wonder if it will make him stop playing golf.

I'm confident you won't regret it. I read quite a lot of SF, both older and newer. There's a lot of classic SF that's really good, but you have to constantly keep in mind the time it was written in because the story or the characters or the dialog is dated. There was zero of that with that book, it could have been written yesterday (the setting kind of insulates it culturally and technologically). And the sensibilities are so, so far ahead of its time.

I just reread The Left Hand Of Darkness last month, and it's such a great book. Nothing in it is dated. It was written in 1969, and it's not just about hermaphrodites; the people of that planet are essentially genderless except once a month when, if they get together with someone else also going through it, one becomes female and the other male essentially randomly - it could switch next time. She takes that situation and explores what a society like that would be like. Further, it's told through the eyes of a more traditional male who seems somewhat misogynistic. It's an amazing piece of work, and it's amazing it was published when it was.

I don't have a xitter account, is this real?

Loathsome, misogynistic convicted felon? Yeah, about right, though at 72 he's a bit young.

He's got some weird things about fathering children. That story about him wanting to donate his sperm to Mars settlers was just too bizarre.

I don't believe Swift buys her own groceries, or that anyone on her staff takes a jet to the grocery store. That's just dumb.

I think it's ridiculous that we have a system where someone can make billions singing songs while people providing essential functions have troubles making ends meet, but I haven't heard any credible evidence that Swift exploits her staff.

So if a group of guys came to your neighbors house and told the family that they're going to move into it with them, you wouldn't be for removing them, even if that meant a fight? It would be better to just let them move in because that way no one gets hurt?

And if they successfully move into your neighbor's house, they might have eyes on your house next.

Russia is trying to take over Ukraine, a sovereign country, by force, and other countries are trying to help Ukraine fight Russia. Yes, people on both sides are dying. Ukrainians apparently overwhelmingly believe it's worth the fight.

Not sure I've heard Swift described as "scummy" before.

And if you're so against billionaires and politicians, why are you for the billionaire politician from the party who wants to cut taxes for billionaires, and not the candidate from a working class background who wants to increase taxes for billionaires?

It's really infuriating. Every time he's asked a question, and she gets a rebuttal, he just starts rebutting her rebuttal and they just let him. And half the time what he's says has nothing to do with the question that was asked. They cut Kamala off pretty much every time.

Pretty amazing considering the 2023 fiasco.

Noticed this little girl on my shirt

This is an interesting list. It's missing some of the true great classics, like Frankenstein, and it has a number of unusual, less well known titles, but there's a lot to like on it. There's certainly a lot for people to disagree about, but it may well have your less often cited favorites, too. What do you think?

That The Knack/Ting Tings/Toni Basil mashup got me thinking about other great mashups, so I'm wondering what your favorites are. Here are a few of mine:

I see a lot of posts here with zero or negative total votes. I posted one just a bit ago and it went to zero pretty quickly. I don't personally care, but it seems curious. It's not like this is a political community or something divisive. What would make someone downvote before they even know what the song is?

Here's a bonus image

I was hoping someone would get this one. The hint in the second image was the silver cup.

Lyrics This is for all the lonely people Thinkin' that life has passed them by Don't give up until you drink from the silver cup And ride that highway in the sky

This is for all the single people Thinkin' that love has left them dry Don't give up until you drink from the silver cup You never know until you try

Well, I'm on my way Yes, I'm back to stay Well, I'm on my way back home (Hit it)

This is for all the lonely people Thinkin' that life has passed them by Don't give up until you drink from the silver cup Never take you down or never give you up Never know until you try

I noticed before that some of the entries got downvoted, and I thought it must be people thinking the image doesn't fit the song (and even that doesn't seem fair given the rules), but I'm seeing that some of these are downvoted even before we know what song it is. So I'm curious, what makes people see an entry and downvote it?

Some excerpts from the article below. I almost didn't post it when I saw it was funded by an egg company, but it's interesting.

Researchers randomly assigned people to eat either 12 fortified eggs per week or to eat fewer than two eggs of any kind per week. People could cook the eggs however they liked.

In the study, after following participants for four months, researchers did not see any adverse effects on cardiovascular health among people who ate 12 fortified eggs per week.

For example, blood cholesterol levels were similar between people who regularly ate fortified eggs and those who ate few or no eggs.

People in the fortified egg group also had a reduction in their total cholesterol level, insulin resistance scores, and high-sensitivity troponin (a marker of heart damage). They even saw an increase in their vitamin B levels.

In addition, “there were signals of potential benefits of eating fortified eggs that warrant further investigation in larger studies,” Nouhravesh said in the release.

In particular, there were possible benefits of eating fortified eggs among older adults and those with diabetes, including a rise in HDL (“good”) cholesterol and a decrease in LDL (“bad”) cholesterol.

The results of the study, which was funded by Eggland’s Best, have not been published yet in a peer-reviewed journal, so should be viewed with caution.
