[–] [email protected] 32 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago) (7 children)

hey that's not fair they uh actually have um their own uniquely innovative type of sushi that they er, invented or something of that sort

https://www.theage.com.au/goodfood/eating-out/yes-australian-sushi-exists-get-over-it-argues-adam-liaw-20231123-p5em7w.html

it's like regular sushi but they don't cut it
wonderful stuff coming out of Australia

they also put sprinkles on bread. which is an A-level gastronomic innovation in the Anglic realm

I'm pretty sure the dutch invented the sprinkles thing

[–] [email protected] 21 points 9 months ago (1 children)

my whole life is a lie thought up by the dutch

[–] [email protected] 16 points 9 months ago

Many people are saying this

[–] [email protected] 12 points 9 months ago (1 children)

And the Dutch are just as bad…

[–] [email protected] 10 points 9 months ago

There’s 2 things I hate

[–] [email protected] 9 points 9 months ago

They got the patent first anyway according to wiki which i checked before scrolling down to find youd beat me to it.

[–] [email protected] 19 points 9 months ago

I'll die before I give up my fairy bread.

Death to Australia, though.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 9 months ago (4 children)

Yeah, Australians are such bigots. I hate them all.

[–] [email protected] 17 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Every Australian I've met have been pretty racist yeah

[–] [email protected] 12 points 9 months ago (2 children)

Its only as bad as any other anglo country.

[–] [email protected] 23 points 9 months ago (1 children)

In 1900 New Zealand was given a choice to join Australia as a state and one of the commonly cited reasons against joining was that NZers were worried that Australians were so racist that they would cause another war with the indigenous Maori people.

Not that NZers at the time were treating Maori people with fairness and dignity, but Maori could at least vote and Australia was actively genociding the Tasmanian aboriginal people at the time so...

Not exactly as bad as all other anglo countries.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 9 months ago (1 children)

there's something very funny to me about turboracists who nevertheless draw the line somewhere.

like NZ in the above story, or like the countless very racist northerners in the ACW who certainly did not want to live next to black people or treat them as equals, but were nevertheless willing to fucking die to end slavery.

how do you get this kind of brainworm?!

[–] [email protected] 17 points 9 months ago (2 children)

At that time NZ Settlers had just gotten out of a very destructive war with the Maori. Maori people fought exceptionally well and some historians credit them with inventing proto-trench warfare.

The white settlers had to cry to Britain for help, and the war was so expensive the Brits basically told the settlers that they weren't getting bailed out again. In other words the KKKrakas were afraid that the dipshit Aussies would kick off round 2 with the Maori and get them all killed.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 9 months ago (2 children)

So the Aussies weren't more racist. NZ settlers were just trying to keep things on the DL. Being afraid of repercussions for being racist isn't being less racist.

NZ is like Canada. The government is systemic racism personified but they say sorry as they twist the knife.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 9 months ago

Trying to read up on it now, but to my knowledge (which is out of date by a few years) neither Australia nor Canada have nation-wide programs which are analogous to the Treaty of Waitangi claims process which has paid out significant compensation and granted rights to indigenous peoples?

The closest I can find is some local land back program in Tasmania (where most of the Aboriginal people were already genocided) and some vague mentions of modern treaties between the Canadian govt and First Nations groups surrounding limited rights and land back.

Like yeah maybe the average NZ KKKraka isn't any less racist than an Australian or Canadian (debatable imo, but not falsifiable either way) but NZ seems to still be the least bad Anglo settler colony because it's still trying to do something tangible to uphold the original treaty between the Maori and the Anglos.

Obviously it's not enough and will never be enough, especially with a historically flawed process and a new right wing govt. Least bad is still a loooong way off from good.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

The Maoris were just better organized or something and more keen on (or able to) kicking them out than the Australian Natives were

which makes sense given the size and corresponding disunity of Australia tribal cultures

[–] [email protected] 10 points 9 months ago
[–] [email protected] 12 points 9 months ago

In true Australian fashion, they’re more open about it

[–] [email protected] 17 points 9 months ago

this but unironically

[–] [email protected] 10 points 9 months ago

😭 ✊ 🍆 💦

[–] [email protected] 15 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago) (1 children)

they also put sprinkles on bread.

I followed your link and i think those thieves probably stole the idea from the Dutch https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hagelslag

[–] [email protected] 14 points 9 months ago

Damn. Imagine having to copy culinary ideas from the Dutch.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago) (1 children)

It's actually OK to make new kinds of sushi. All the good sushi isn't authentically Japanese anyway.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Yeah except if you read the article about half way down it admits that "Australian sushi" is just a futomaki slightly different fillings. Pretty weak claim tbh.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago) (1 children)

With peking duck and shit in it. It's an entire roll served with stuff like peking duck. It's totally non standard sushi.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

With peking duck and shit in it.

terf island: tikka masala is BRITISH CUISINE
terf desert: hold my vegemite

With peking duck and shit in it.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 9 months ago

Leave fairy bread alone!

[–] [email protected] 8 points 9 months ago (1 children)

They also have pavlova though

[–] [email protected] 14 points 9 months ago (1 children)

The thing they stole from New Zealand.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 9 months ago (1 children)

Why did I just read the whole Wikipedia section on the origins of Pavlova in Australia and New Zealand?

[–] [email protected] 8 points 9 months ago

Wait until you hear about how Australia appropriated the Maori word "Manuka" to cash in on New Zealand successfully exporting Manuka honey.

[–] [email protected] 26 points 9 months ago (2 children)
[–] [email protected] 23 points 9 months ago

I think everyone should experience such a mindset (splattered all over the pavement and photographed as a piece for MoMA)

[–] [email protected] 22 points 9 months ago

It truly is something uniquely European, to go somewhere that is not Europe and then complain that there are too many non-Europeans.

[–] [email protected] 24 points 9 months ago

It really isn't that bizarre. "Australian nationalist" just means "neo-nazi" but too cowardly to say it.

[–] [email protected] 22 points 9 months ago

It's weird to be a nationalist for a nation with a foreign head of state.
