Monster ends up being in large part about nothing and with very little resolution. 21st Century Boys also has this issue, but it at least has the decency to include elements along the way that are more independently interesting.
I don't agree that it didn't have much substance; I found the story very interesting even if I was a bit disappointed by the sudden ending. I haven't watched it in many years, though, so I might be more critical if I end up watching/reading it again
I loved Monster, but I do agree that what happened in the village at the end was....less crazy than what I would've assumed the villain could get away with; Also this might be cringe to say, but everything people say the joker from Batman is supposed to be, I got the impression is what Johan was.
I still remember how disturbing it was to see a kid who nearly killed himself because Johan made him feel so unloved and unwanted. This show was genuinely awesome; also props to a show that could show people from around the world without the kind of sentiment of hatred and fear of strangers that a movie like Taken would instill, but instead a more positive approach.
