As a Chinese American, I kinda have this self-imposed rule to never enter the boundaries of a red state, and even within Blue/Purple states, to avoid ending up in some rural town. Bascially, half of my country is inaccessible to me due to my perceived fear of potentially being a victim of racism.

Am I being paranoid?

I’ve lived and worked in red states my whole life and I’d say you’re paranoid.

Ive worked in Kentucky, North Carolina, West Virginia, and Missouri to name a few.

I call the Appalachians home

I do not pass for white

My name sounds foreign as fuck

I’ve got a beautiful wife who happens to be white

It is certainly better today than it was 40 years ago. But things can quickly back slide.
