Did some searching and the movie is Gandahar (1988) by René Laloux, same who directed Le Planète Sauvage. I need to rewatch Fantastic Planet since it's been a long time!

Providing an answer to my own question by way of wiki link: The article on quantum key distribution says the typical algorithm used is a one-time pad:

The resulting ciphertext will be impossible to decrypt or break if the following four conditions are met:

  • The key must be at least as long as the plaintext.
  • The key must be random (uniformly distributed in the set of all possible keys and independent of the plaintext), entirely sampled from a non-algorithmic, chaotic source such as a hardware random number generator; patternless, according to Gregory Chaitin definition. [Cutting out a long piece saying what doesn't count as random]
  • The key must never be reused in whole or in part.
  • The key must be kept completely secret by the communicating parties.

Ngl the key needing to be the same size as the plaintext seems like it wouldn't scale well depending on the payload. But I guess you could do a little better with compression.

So what this experiment did is show that the keys can be communicated securely over a long distance, without any possibility of being eavesdropped? What do they do with the keys after being received? Is the key used as an input to some quantum cryptography algorithm, or as typical keys used in traditional cryptography?

I'm on the other side, I moved out of the US several years ago but sometime next year I think I'll quit the job I took in my new country. So I need to decide if I'll stay in the country (I moved with work) and fully integrate, or move back. But I'm also getting married to my partner I met here, which makes it complicated.

The idea of moving back to the US makes me kinda sick, but it's also expensive and can be complicated to live abroad. Taxes? Social security eligibility? Contributing to retirement? Bank transfers and currency conversions, expensive flights home for the holidays... learning a new language.. it can be either exciting or overwhelming.

For you I'd recommend making sure you have residence lined up first before you move to another country. Usually this is done by getting a job, but that can be difficult if you need them to kinda sponsor you or be willing to assist with residency stuff. It will be confusing if the instructions aren't in a language you know. And it will work differently than what you're used to. You'll get very good at filling out paperwork.

Edit: but whatever you do, get out of Ohio 😂
