Ok, so this is likely coming from lemmy.ml then, and if I don't want that, I'll need to use a different instance. Thank you

But it isn't the whole comment, just particular words

Ohh, I'd never heard of Mumble. Just did a quick look, and I could see how I could rig something together with a raspberry pi and some peripherals to make this work. It's certainly worth investigating.

Thank you for the suggestion!

Bluetooth can get a couple hundred feet of range, which would be plenty.

I don't want to rely on an online option, because this is often used on the coast or internationally where cell service may be unreliable or non-existent.

Yea, I've looked at those too. If they just had voice chat, they could be a winner

It really seems like I ought to be able to connect a few devices locally via Bluetooth or teathering, and be able to have an open voice chat between those devices without an internet connection, and without push-to-talk.

Anyone aware of something like this that works? I've tried a few candidates, but I haven't had much luck getting something to work.

For extra context on why I want this: I lead a sport kite team, and as the leader, I give vocal commands to tell the rest of the team what to do, and keep us coordinated. We usually use walkie talkies for this, but the one-way communication, the limited non-PTT support, and potential international regulation problems make this workable but not ideal.

There's a bit of a community, but it is too small to show up much on most social media. Almost all of it is on Facebook these days, which is the only reason I have a FB account.

There's a few groups out there like Sport Kite Pilots Longe that are pretty good spots for online conversation. Otherwise, we mostly meet up at Kite festivals. My next event will be the Washington State International Kite Festival during the 3rd fill week of Aigust

I do sport kite flying and kite making, and I love it. It's incredibly small and niche.

The kites are multi-line kites that can be controlled from the ground, and I typically fly to music and perform at kite festivals. I also build my kites myself by sewing together ripstop for the sails, cutting down carbon tubes for the frame, and 3d printing fittings.

Im a Reddit refugee, and figured I'd make my first Lemmy post. Here's a performance of mine from January in South Padre Island, TX flying kites indoors. Hope folks like it, it's a small sport that I'd love to see grow.

I find my job meaningful and fulfilling. I'd rather not go back to the office.

My company killed its lease on a few floors of our main office and moved that money to employee travel for occasional office visits (~1 per quarter).
