after I've previously posted this and this, an update: both the memrise browser version and the iOS app now have "chat to a buddy" as a non-skipable step in course iteration

the "buddy" is a chatbot of unclear provenance. this page mentions "MemBot - powered by AI" at the top, which is a link to this zendesk page, but that's a dead link

so it looks like duolingo is planning to become damage to be routed around

From: The Sentry Team <[email protected]>
Subject:	Update to Sentry’s List of Subprocessors
...
 - Google LLC (Google Cloud Services) and OpenAI, L.L.C. are now reflected as subprocessors for all Sentry products, instead of select features only; and
 - Anthropic, PBC is now added as a subprocessor.

sigh

they do still have user-specified controls (and appear to respect them), but... sigh

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 week ago

which reminds me, I've wanted to post this as a NASB

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

haha I was just about to post this after seeing it too

must be a great feather to add into the cap along with all the recent silicon issues

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 week ago

gotta make sure to catch that wave before the air goes outta the balloon

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 week ago

(I should be clear, they based "their" thing on the "not steve"..... but, well....)

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I bring you: this

they based their entire public support/response/community/social/everything program on that

for years

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 week ago (5 children)

okay look, I wanna be quite fair to this comment

and that starts with first apologising to you for what I'm about to do, which is engage in one of the worst social patterns and false logic modes of engagement that plagues forums

so I just gotta ask you: what the fuck made you choose that abominably shitty semi-clone of a rust emblem? good god. do better.

breathe

okay. with that out of the way. on to the meat.

I'm sorry you fuckin wot m8?

did you ever fucking pay any attention whatsoever to the details here? are you so fucking thoroughly up your own goddamn ass that you do not see the problem here?

holy fucking christ in a tapdancing duet with the devil, how did you think this post of yours was an okay one to make?

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Didn’t know it had come out but I was wondering if they’d manage to continue s2 like s1

Also worried for the next season of the boys..

Julien Delavande , an engineer at AI research firm Hugging Face , has developed a tool that shows in real time the power consumption of the chatbot generating

gnnnnnngh

this shit pisses me off so bad

there's actually quantifiable shit you can use across vendors[0]. there's even some software[1] you can just slap in place and get some good free easy numbers with! these things are real! and are usable!

"measure the power consumption of the chatbot generating"

I'm sorry you fucking what? just how exactly are you getting wattage out of openai? are you lovingly coaxing the model to lie to you about total flops spent?

[0] - intel's def been better on this for a while but leaving that aside for now..

[1] - it's very open source! (when I last looked there was no continual in-process sampling so you got hella at-observation sampling problems; but, y'know, can be dealt with)

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 week ago

looks to be! thanks, I’d seen that before and remember the incident, but I’m beyond abysmal at names

(this is a problem to solve, I know)

found this kicking around on one of the feeder sites a few days ago and only got to read it now

kinda neat. it's the sort of thing that you used to find quite a lot with keygens and other things prone to easter eggs, and that I don't really know of being as prevalent in more recent gaming and such

Need to make a primal scream without gathering footnotes first? Have a sneer percolating in your system but not enough time/energy to make a whole post about it? Go forth and be mid: Welcome to the Stubsack, your first port of call for learning fresh facts of Awful you'll near-instantly regret.

Any awful.systems sub may be subsneered in this subthread, techtakes or no.

If your sneer seems higher quality than you thought, feel free to cut’n’paste it into its own post — there’s no quota for posting and the bar really isn’t that high.

The post Xitter web has spawned soo many “esoteric” right wing freaks, but there’s no appropriate sneer-space for them. I’m talking redscare-ish, reality challenged “culture critics” who write about everything but understand nothing. I’m talking about reply-guys who make the same 6 tweets about the same 3 subjects. They’re inescapable at this point, yet I don’t see them mocked (as much as they should be)
Like, there was one dude a while back who insisted that women couldn’t be surgeons because they didn’t believe in the moon or in stars? I think each and every one of these guys is uniquely fucked up and if I can’t escape them, I would love to sneer at them.

there is some strong copium in the article, combined with a total description of having a massive gambling addiction without, y’know, actually realising it’s an addiction

remarkable stuff

there are some remarkable instances of bad behaviour in there already, but imagine being the sort of product team that thinks users being gaslit by a chatbot that they couldn’t even consent to choose to use is totes something to deliver without any modification or remark

this time in open letter format! that'll sure do it!

there are "risks", which they are definite about - the risks are not hypothetical, the risks are real! it's totes even had some acknowledgement in other places! totes real defs for sure this time guize

since I haven't touched AP before (and figure other possible contributors may not have either), going to use this post as wayfarer bathroom graffiti

feel free to contribute your own learning and investigation as well

It’s been a long couple of years with people going hard on building all their communications on the gamer chat company, disregarding all warnings and concerns because of shiny creature comforts

Soon: “we trusted you! We moved from slack to you! 😭”

Guess it’s only a handful of months before the tortured handwringing starts?

Unfortunately I can’t snip from mobile easily now, but maybe someone else can archive it and comment with archive link?

Too tired to sneer at the book myself right now but the article doesn’t pull punches either

Figured it’s worth posting since the book author has featured here more than once recently and has definitely been an enabler to The Shit

found via someone running a server at revision

retro fun. quite slick, too!

Not entirely the usual fare, but i figured some here would appreciate it

I often rag on the js/node/npm ecosystem for being utter garbage, and this post is a quite a full demonstration of many of the shortcomings and outright total design failures present in that space
