Microsoft is starting to enable ads inside the Start menu on Windows 11 for all users. After testing these briefly with Windows Insiders earlier this month, Microsoft has started to distribute update KB5036980 to Windows 11 users this week, which includes “recommendations” for apps from the Microsoft Store in the Start menu.

Luckily you can disable these ads, or “recommendations” as Microsoft calls them. If you’ve installed the latest KB5036980 update then head into Settings > Personalization > Start and turn off the toggle for “Show recommendations for tips, app promotions, and more.” While KB5036980 is optional right now, Microsoft will push this to all Windows 11 machines in the coming weeks.

Microsoft’s move to enable ads in the Windows 11 Start menu follows similar promotional spots in the Windows 10 lock screen and Start menu. Microsoft also started testing ads inside the File Explorer of Windows 11 last year before disabling the experiment and saying the test was “not intended to be published externally.” Hopefully that experiment remains very much an experiment.

It seems possible that Brave are building Brave Pro, which looks like its a subscription based service of some kind. A note on the Android implementation of the project reads (GitHub link):

"Implement the required runtime changes (profile settings, chrome flags, group policies, etc.) with the appropriate values that enable the Brave Pro experience. Using Brave in this mode with its default settings and making changes to the Brave Pro defaults require an active paid subscription.

When the browser has no active credentials for Brave Pro, the panel UI will promote the service and include the initial payment CTA. When credentials are present the panel UI will include the appropriate toggles for making changes to the default settings."

It also links to a private Google Doc.

Yeah, I agree. It does need to be framed that it came from the early 2000's. It doesn't make it anymore flattering now, but it does feel like the edginess of the time.

I love your breakdown of the piece. I really hope to see you around here more! You offer such interesting takes on this.

I had the exact same problem until today. lol

It looks like they’re needing funding at the moment. Hopefully they can stick around!

I was responding based on the community you’re in. I’m now assuming you are seeing this from either local feed, or subscribed. If that’s the case, then I understand the confusion.

I wasn’t intending to give off hostility in my words. If that’s what you interpreted, my bad for phrasing it poorly.

I’m aware of the balancing act. I just thought it was an interesting opinion piece that I myself don’t quite share. My words [will always be bracketed] to tell the difference. Thanks for offering a counter argument to this article!

Back then it was so nice. All the features of instant messaging, combined with the compatibility of sms for everyone else. It also integrated with Google photos which made it the complete package.

  • 156/silence - that vocal one take video was amazing. The music wasn't really hitting until that video. I'll eventually be posting this over there.
  • Dave Weckle Band - Tiempo De Festival (Live) was phenomenal. I'm for sure going to be sharing this song to the other community.
  • TWRP - I actually know them already and went to re-check them out. I wasn't really able to get into them, but I still love the animation and song on the popular one Starlight Brigade

Thanks for sharing these!

That's awesome! What do you play? Also, any recommendations, or do you want to shill your music to me?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Yep, I think you're right. I can probably bypass this with a link shortener, but it's not worth selling out people's data. Just copy and paste it if you're running into issues.

That's weird, here's just the link without any formatting. Try this: https://wondermark.com/c/1k62/

I hope you're ready then lol It won't be just metal or aggressive music, but they'll most certainly be there.
