Did anyone else think they put on the wrong show with that intro? It was neat, but I was confused for a minute.

Same! I was like "did I accidentally click eternals? What's going on here" very intriguing way to get started

I just watched What If...? Season 2 and was wondering if the portal in the water is the same kind of Tesseract-modified water that Kahhori's tribe had near their village, and then spent too long thinking about it before remembering the Space Stone was destroyed with all the others in Infinity War.

Not sure if it was intentional, but that first scene after the backstory (with the trucks) reminded me of the first scene from Daredevil (in the docks). Similar framing or something?

I also liked the blending of the daredevil score when he shows up

I still think Marvel Studios is figuring out how to transfer over from their movies to television with pacing and some minor issues, but once that big fight kicked in I was pretty sold on their first TV-MA outing. Good cinematography and they didn't shy away from the violence; having to fight Daredevil on her first job for Fisk got me standing up. The look on her face when she sees DD and her being smart enough to keep trying to get to a gun instead of trying to beat him in unarmed combat was thrilling.

I hope we get to see more Zahn McClarnon in some flashbacks, he's so good as Maya's father. I'm assuming Graham Greene shows up more in the present too. I'm definitely looking forward to Devery Jacobs coming into this, she was amazing in Reservation Dogs (as were McClarnon and Greene).

I'm 20 minutes in now. They did Maya's Story from childhood to becoming a pawn for Kingpin well, quick and followable. Also gave us a recap of Hawkeye, featuring the pivotal scenes from there, and an additional fight with Daredevil. Truly feels like she has been in a crossover special and now returns to her solo series.

For me personally, that Daredevil fight scene was a bit too show-fighty, some of those moves were overly choreographed and didnt feel very real. But hey.

this first episode is quite weird, I think trying to explain Echo’s whole backstory makes it really rushed. Excited to see DD of course and the fight scene was quite good so I’m optimistic for the rest of the series. Not sure if I’m gonna binge it all tonight or spread it out a bit.

My same thoughts, the first part felt a bit rushed... but at the same time this feels like the Marvel show I've been waiting a long time for. Maybe they could have used a handful more episodes to work with?

I'm going to space it out and watch it bit by bit

Yeah, the first 25 minutes or so we're an extended recap of Hawkeye, minus Hawkeye (mostly).

It's weird because without that show you could tell a fun story about Maya vs Kingpin. Trusted since childhood, grew up with Kingpin, then he betrays you, you find out later, you kill him. It's a great story. I guess they can't tell that one since it's already been speedran.

I hope the story ends with Kingpin and Maya on the same side. I think that would be brutal and make for excellent future stories. They can be highly mistrusting of each other, but forced to work together.

I thought maybe that they don’t want to require people to watch Hawkeye beforehand, but I’m not sure how effective that was. If the viewer didn’t watch Hawkeye, I’m not sure that first episode was clear enough to explain much. Or maybe the intention is actually for people who’s watched Hawkeye, this is just a refresher. Either way it’s a bit confusing for me.

As I mentioned in the predictions thread this show is under the Marvel Spotlight branding which says "our audience doesn’t need to have seen other Marvel series to understand what’s happening in Maya’s story"

So doing the Hawkeye recap makes sense, since Maya's journey is directly affected by the events of Hawkeye.

What's interesting is, apart from the subtitles, I don't think Daredevil is mentioned by name. Is the audience expected to know who he is? How about Kingpin? (Also, never mentioned by name? Only as "King")

Also, the reveal of who actually killed Maya's father being Ronin aka Hawkeye. Does the average viewer remember that brief arc from Endgame? Is it clear that Ronin was being used by Kingpin? I know they did the "you were used, like me" scene, taken directly from Hawkeye, but did it land?

I think the idea of "Marvel Spotlight" is interesting, and maybe recaps are fine, but Maya's story feels too intertwined.

I think you’ve got the spotlight idea backwards. I think it’s supposed to be that this is a spotlight on this character and you don’t need to watch it to understand the rest of the MCU.

Finished ep1 now. I'm not completely sure what Maya's motivation is here besides running away from Kingpin's henchmen. "It's time for a queen"? She really wants to take over Kingpin's criminal enterprise? Why?

I hope they know what the strong parts of this first episode are - the family - and don't forget that for the rest of the series, like they did on Ms Marvel.
